a lot of the writers on the Simpsons are Canadian, I think at least half of the time when Canada gets mocked on American TV it's cause a Canadian writer wrote the joke

There are at least four Canadian writers on The Simpson's. The creator of the Simpson's and Family Guy, Matt Groening's father, Homer Groening, was born in Main Centre, Saskatchewan, a tiny hamlet, present population of 5 people. (That is not a typo!). He later moved to Portland, Oregon. Homer grew up in a Plautdietsch/Mennonite Low German speaking family. All the Simpson's characters are named for Homer's family. Matt is now worth over $600 million dollars. Incredible!

His great grandfather Abraham was born in the Ukraine, came to Hillsboro, Kansas in the late 1870's and had a family. He was a leading member of the Gnadenau Krimmer Mennonite Brethren church until a WW1 draft notice was sent to his 16 year old son A.A. Groening. (Matt's grandfather). Mennonites are pacifists, so Abraham Sr. moved the family to Main Centre, Saskatchewan. AA married and had Matt's father, Homer , who grew up in a Plautdietsch/Mennonite Low German speaking family. The church in the hamlet of Main Centre, Saskatchewan was Mennonite Brethren. I am attaching a history of the family. as well as an article that confirms that Matt Groening is not Jewish. Part of the humor of American comedy about Canada is their ignorance of our country and its untruthfulness or exaggerations. It's over their heads. That makes us laugh pretty hard because they don't really get the joke, so it is kind of on them. 😂

I had to chuckle over dome of those. Being Canadian i find it very funny that we are thought of as being in snow all year round. The mention of Ottawa being the warmest is a fallacy. We can get into the -40’sC in winter and then possibly go into the 40’sC during the summer.

the funniest think the US does when they show a map of North America with the Temp. they show Canada in Celsius but do not tell you they just say it is 0 degrees in Toronto and the say 32 degrees in Buffalo so some Americans think it is 0 degrees Fahrenheit and they look at the map and see a big temperature drop but in fact it 0 C will be 32 F

I remember a piece by Jim Carrey where he said when he first moved to Los Angeles, if he said he was from Canada the response was always 'Wow, Canada. Must have been cold'. He then goes on jokingly to say that he soon changed his response to say Yes it is very cold. We have to drill holes in the ice to catch our food and then we need to build an igloo to protect ourselves from polar bears and flying hockey pucks.

Highly recommend watching the movie "Men With Brooms" - a Canadian comedy starring Paul Gross and Leslie Nielsen. It's an ode to both curling in Canada, and the differences between Canada and the US. Love the movie, and there are so many little things that are just "Look - Canadiana!!!!" in it.

A lot of British comedy was on TV when I was growing up. Of course there was Monty Python, but even other shows like, "The Two Ronnies," and "Spitting Image." "Faulty Towers," despite the short run, was always a favorite of mine as well. And I would say British culture, including TV, had a big impact on even the home grown comedy that was made in Canada.

Curling is a huge sport here, especially in the Martimes ( east coast ), but you can find leagues all across Canada as well as small town curling rinks. Its easily one of the top 5 sports in Canada.

Another show you should review is Corner Gas. While I grew up in Alberta, the show Corner Gas was located in rural Saskatchewan which is just one province over. Both provinces are considered prairie provinces and the populations are quite similar. I cannot picture anybody growing up in the 60s, 70,s, or 80s that cannot relate somehow to something silly in the plots and/or characters of the show. Brent Butt, who I believe created as well as starred in the show, definitely captured a culture, the eastern-western rivalry, the importance of Canadian football to smaller populated centres, the silly fads of the times, the small town atmosphere where everybody knows everything and everybody else, and shows the world once again that Canadians are willing to laugh at themselves. With Canadian humour, it is easy to laugh.

Many TV and movies are shot in Canada. For instance, when I finally watched the Netflix show "Lucifer", which is supposed to be in LA, but the second episode, "Lucifer, Stay, Good Devil", in a scene filmed on the street, you can distinctly see downtown Vancouver, BC. For me, I had to laugh because this scene was shot right outside where I use to live in Vancouver, on East Franklin St.!

You want Canadian talents/comedy (or irony), The Band "The Guess Who" and their song "American Woman" Or the SCTV/"Great White North" comedy album with the Song "Take Off" sang by the GREAT Getty Lee (lead singer, bassist, and keyboardist). Check out the "Official Video") to start with. All 3 members of the band would easily rank in the 10 ten in thier catagories . Neil Peart (RIP), was continually ranked as one of the best drummers of all time along side Keith Moon. Neil was know for writing all the lyrics of RUSH songs, but his songe would routinely have around 10 different time changes in each song. As for "The Proffessors(Neil Peart)'s drum skills check out his live 9+ minute drum solo in Germany.

We had an American come to work for my company in Vancouver. He was very interested in learning more about Canada so I loaned him a book called "How to be Canadian (even if you already are one)". It's hilarious with a lot of genuine history and information but a lot of satire and playing on stereotypes. He said he liked the book but couldn't tell when they were joking, or not. LOL

I was very lucky to meet John Candy when he was filming the bob sled movie in Calgary. I was attending a company Christmas Party at the Palliser Hotel, was in the elevator, he got in with a couple of friends....nicest man ever! He asked how I was doing, etc and wished me a Merry Christmas !!!

Curling is the big sport of small cities and towns in Canada. Not so much in the bigger cities. Manitoba probably has the highest density of rinks, clubs and leagues. It's extremely popular in small-town Quebec, P.E.I. and Nova Scotia. The game is best enjoyed with a substantial amount of rotgut Canadian rye whiskey. It's Scottishness is part of the charm, and has always been integral to it, with most of the game's terminology being of Scottish origin. The same Canadian towns that have a big curling rink will also tend to have highland games and other signs of the country's Scottish heritage. The game is basically played in Canada, Scotland, and Scandinavia. Some Americans play it in the northernmost states, but it's little known to the public there. Long ago, I was at a party in Arizona. I mentioned curling for some reason, and found myself compelled to explain what it was. When I got to the part about sweeping the ice with brooms, I realized that nobody in the room believed me and thought I was making it all up.

@@johnp5990 Nice to hear that. For all its absurd-looking elements, curling is a good game. I didn't mean to imply that curling is absent from the biggest cities. Far from it. But it does have to compete with the many other amusements available in a big city, and many of the newer immigrants come from places where the sport is unknown. The population of Mississauga is nearly 40% of South Asian background, so, as you might expect, it has a host of cricket clubs. It's in small-town Canada that you find curling at the heart of the local social scene, right along with the Kiwanis Club or the Richelieu Club.

Curling is very popular, great way to get out of the house in winter, play a game involving ice and drink beer with friends. The Newfoundland accent is no joke. I worked with a lady who had just come to Ontario and her accent was so strong I kept having to ask her to repeat what she said. She finally told me she thought I had a hearing impairment!

In a small town, Cloyne, Ontario a server at a donut diner had a strong what I thought was Newfoundland accent. I asked her if she was was from there and she said no she was born in Cloyne and had never traveled but said many people ask her if she's a Newfie. Cloyne is approximately an hour and a half north of Kingston. The Scottish, Irish, British mashup cadence is strong in rural Eastern Ontario.

If your going to dive into Canadian comedy, I would suggest SCTV. ( Second City Television network) I believe it was a response to the American’s Saturday Night live. It was where John Candy really made a name for himself, as well as many others. My favourite was always Doug and Bob Mackenzie as they explored the “ Great White North”. This comedy spot was actually made to fulfill Canadian content rules, and “ took off” as being very popular. There was a movie made, Doug and Bob’s big Adventure, as well as an Album. Both my parents curled when we lived in Gander Newfoundland when I was a kid. It is inexpensive, there are curling rinks everywhere and you do not have to be an athlete to play. So yes, very popular in that pretty much anyone old enough to move a rock can play.

True Story When I was young, my Dad played on the pulp mill curling team, and there was an annual bonspiel right after Christmas. The curling rink was part of the Legion building (of course). One year my Dad was hoping just to play a few ends and then join the party. But his team kept winning. He used to say all he got for three days was third place and 2 beer ! 🤣😁😄😅

One of funniest moments is John Candy in Planes, Trains and Automobiles. John Candy driving a literally burned out K-car convertible gets stopped by a cop. As the shocked cop arrives beside the car, Candy says "Is there a problem officer?". Pure gold.

Yep, we absolutely love curling, and Newfie is kind of a blend between Scots, Welsh and a few different Irish accents. Canada is very big on self-deprecating humor, and a big part of being Canadian culture is never taking yourself too seriously.

Regarding donuts. Many years ago, pro hockey player, Tim Horton opened a number of Tim Horton coffee and donut shops. There were franchises. They were a huge hit. Coffee was good and the donuts were big and delicious! These coffee shops became meeting places for folks to get together and visit. Some people meet everyday. There’s no pressure to leave. Years later, the shops expanded, turning up everywhere. They added more things to their menu, like cookies and muffins. Then they added on sandwiches and chilli. Tim Horton died not long after Tim Hortons became a household word. Some years back they made some changes, all to make more $! They stopped making the donuts in the stores. They were shipped to different stores from some main place. I think they arrive frozen or something. They also vastly reduced the size of the donuts( a really shitty move. Once they’d shrunk the donuts, they could fit a dozen in a box, which was an obvious advantage. I don’t go anymore - haven’t for years. Millions do though, l think it’s because it’s such a great meeting place for friends. Ps we’ve always had donuts in our bakeries.

Yes, that was an actual Curling match, Team Canada against Team Bottcher (which was representing the Province of Alberta) in "The Brier". The Brier, known as the Tim Hortons Brier for sponsorship reasons, is the annual Canadian men's curling championship, sanctioned by Curling Canada. The current event name refers to its main sponsor, the Tim Hortons coffee and donut shop chain. I would say Curling is larger in Canada than anywhere else in the World with multiple Pro teams in each Province & Territory, many teams from around the world have lived and trained here and there is a yearly Curling circuit of tournaments that are made up with at least half the teams being international, UK, Scandinavian, European, Asian 😊❤

Ah yes...curling in Canada... Curling may have been invented in Scotland, but Canada has become the undisputed masters of it. In my hometown of Winnipeg we have (had?) more cureling clubs in our city than all of Scotland combined. Our Manitoba Provincial championship is world class curling China sent its Woman's Olympic Curling Team here to train full time for two years... it worked they won gold.

My late dad came home boasting that he did his duty as a Manitoban to help our curling team win. He bumped into Connie Laliberte and told her that what was throwing off her throw was the extra 20 pounds she put on and, if she were to lose it, she would regain her precision. Curling is huge in Canada! One of our greatest exports is curling coaches. Seriously, look at the Olympics next time and see how many coaches from world teams are Canadians :) Canadian curling teams that head to the world stage are expected by Canadians to win Gold. That’s how good they are and how plentiful. Curling for fun is a huge winter social event at curling clubs for Canadians too. Something to help pass the long cold winters. Cheers!

There is an accent similar to Newfie on the New Brunswick north shore. I'm not sure about urban Canada but in rural Canada we grew up with PBS, CBC and Channel 8 (American TV) so we had Benny Hill, The Carry On Gang, Monty Python, Have You Been Served?, Fawlty Towers, The Two Ronnies, etc. That's where we got our humour (humor with a u) although spell check doesn't know how to spell it that way.

The bizarre thing about those US shows poking fun at Canada is that lots of Americans don't realize it's a joke. To us it's funny, to many of them they're 100% convinced that it's an accurate representation. In summer, you'll invariably run into US tourists with puzzled looks on their faces. They wonder where the lumberjacks are, confused as to why it's sunny/hot, and confused why we're not commuting by dog sled. So it's funny when we tell the joke, amusing (for other reasons) when Americans attempt it.

Lorne Michaels is basically responsible for 90% of late night comedy and comedy writers on the scene. I mean everyone who's touched SNL has been molded by Lorne and talks about him like a father. We tend to laugh at the jokes about Canada because other than the apologizing they are just exaggerations of erroneous stereotypes. One of the main pastimes in Canada is laughing at American ignorance about Canada, and that just feeds into it. There is a Canadian musical comedy group, The Arrogant Worms. They do comedy songs like Me Like Hockey, Canada Is Really Big, We Are Beaver, and The Mountie Song and I believe Ontario Sucks although it might be somewhere sucks.

Lorne Michaels, who is credited with being the brains behind NBC's Saturday Night Live, is a Canadian. I remember him back in the 50's, being the straight man in the comedy team of "Hart (Pomerantz) and Lorne (Michaels). Hart did "the Beaver" that was sometimes funny and sometimes not. Hart went on to become a lawyer and Lorne went to the States. We had others as well, ... like Dave Broadfoot. Unfortunately, most of those people were on CBC television and radio.But, unlike the U.S. networks,who can put retrospectives out on their comics, ... Canadian talent , comics or otherwise, are not revered in Canada. In Canada, it's "here today, ... gone tomorrow "... literally. Swallowed up by the U.S. CBC archives are few and far between ...and this has always been a sore spot, personally. Who remembers "Dr Bundolo" for example? I could go on, but I'll save it, ... for something that's long overdue. Does anyone remember when Michael J Fox and Akroyd were on the same"kids" show, here in Canada? Can you name it ?
