And let's be honest, every time she has been nominated she should've won. She didn't because people want to give a chance to other actresses. If she hadn't won this time, the Oscar would've gone to Viola Davis for The Help. She's humble and sweet and an all around incredible person. This is such a beautiful speech and shows her beauty as a human being, mother, wife, friend, collegue and even just a person you walk past in the street. It did strike me as rather sad though, as if she's saying goodbye and her career is close to the end, which I hope isn't the case!

When she was called too I jumped out of surprise and joy. Come on her first Oscar in more than 30 years!

A really beautiful speech honouring Don and Roy. Her choking up made it more sincere

Who cares if Viola or Meryl deserved this win? They're good friends and both are EXTREMELY talented.

Viola reminds me of Meryl. BOTH So insanely talented!

This is literally as on fucking point as a speech could be. She didn't do the typical name referencing, she made it count on a personal note. And if that's not the icing on her "inexplicably amazing" career, then I don't know what is.

To be honest, Glenn Close and Viola Davis impressed me much more that year

Yeah but meryl impressed the academy

Viola probably lost because 'The Help' really was an ensemble piece while Streep carried 'The Iron Lady' mostly on her own. I am glad that Viola would eventually win for 'Fences'.

What I love most about this Oscar moment is that Meryl really didn't expect to win that night. It came as a total surprise to her as you can see in the moment Colin Firth announces her name as the winner and she shays: ''What?'' with a total expression of confusion. I think she thought Viola Davis was going to win, as everybody was thinking. I like this surprises at the Academy Awards because in these last years the Oscars has been so predictable, I mean, today everyone knows who will win before the ceremony.

+Jefferson Borges But not this year, I guess. Best picture, probably The Revenant, but maybe Mad Max. Director is hopfeully George Miller. Actor DiCaprio, Actress Larson, supporting actor Stallone, they are all pretty much locked, but supporting actress? I'm hoping for Winslet. :)

SAMLAJT LOL! Yeh, only the leading actors. Such a shame for a person who has been an Oscar nerd for pretty much all his life. :) And I'm one of those who was happy for Rylance. Not so much for Vikander.

Everybody knew that Meryl would win, even her!! I think it was a bit of acting when she showed surprise. Her performance in "The Iron Lady" was unbeatable and I'm sure she really expected to win.

I love how two of the greatest actors today, Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchett are married to their husbands for decades. No marriage drama, their marriage remains private and they are still going strong.
