The Mesa has a raw growl that I love with more low end and a little less definition on the notes. The 6505 had more note definition with that honey sweetness to its distortion. Both great amps, my preference is the Mesa

I've never liked the 6505's I've owned and sold through the years. Always sounds to me like a half cocked wah pedal. Love my Mesa's and EVH's. But in your comparison the Peavey outperformed the Mesa in a big way. I'm surprised and confused, lol. Another great comparison. Thanks for your taking the time to do these.

@@guitarandgames1386 Nothing "weird" about it. Peavey 5150's and Fender 5150's sound literally nothing alike. As far as where the mid-range frequency curve is set. If you've truly owned both, then you would know that.

First of all, great riffs I really dug it. I never have owned a 6505 but I have owned a few 5150s but the one I regretted have sold was the 5150II. I still owned a Mesa Dual Rectifier and I am looking for a 6505II. Yes, the Mesa has a funny fizzy mid that defined old Metallica sound. I love both of them. FYI, I have to say that the boosted version of your recording sounded more defined.

I regret not getting a loan and not buying every single 5150 in site years ago when they were $400-$500 on CL. That would have been a nice investment. Probably some signature Eddie guitars too, but don't know much about them. I did have a 5150 once though. Sold it, at that time because couldn't play it in an apt.

I love both of these amps. The 5150 on Orange is fantastic for punchy thrash riffs. The rectifier has this amazing harmonic character, even at low gain it can ring out as if you have a sustainiac. 1 day I spent hours battling: Rectifier VS 5150 VS Ultra Plus, the 5150 came in last place. You can't dial out that hisssssss. It's not a clean distortion unfortunately.

I'm new to high gain amps, i have been leaning towards the Peavey 6505+ in every video. In the case of the mesa, i keep hearing that mid frequency scoop, maybe it works in a mix, who knows.

Rectos are known to have quirks like the mid scoop, you kinda just love em or hate em. Having owned both the 6505+ is the opposite, more mid heavy, but that helps it cut through a mix. Both are great amps but as far as heavy tones go, the peavey can stand toe to toe with the dual rec for 1/3 the price

I use my 6505 for death metal in my band. And I gotta say the 6505/5150 is an amazing amp for mixes. Honestly though it's gotta have the right pickups. Not saying it's gotta be a 500$ pickup. But 10$ pickups will sound awful on a 6505. My suggestion is the dimebucker if you want clarity and play really fast shit. And something like a Duncan distortion or a more normal metal pickup for a good sound

I’ve always preferred that 5150/6505 over Measa. There is just too much ‘warble’ in the rectifiers, and something about its mid frequencies causes it to drown it self out in metal/metalcore/hardcore, etc when it comes to anything other than rhythm playing. I can also hear that ‘frying’ tube sound, which kills clarity and makes it sound like a ‘metal’ distortion pedal. Rather than the warmth of tubes. While the Mesa has better low end sustain, it’s incredibly situational - and can often make palm muted stuff sound too muddy/fluffy at times. Of course it can sound good, but no amp should require so much set up, pedal/utility dependency, etc. Otherwise you might as well get a Kemper profiler, etc.

The peavey 6505+ doesn't really need a boost it has gain for days. Rob from Chimaira said he never used a boost with the peavey 6505+ and had a brutal killer defined metal tone.

Depends on the situation... but yeah I wouldn’t generally throw a boost in front of it. But it is one of those amps that if you do or don’t then people put in their 2 cents over it. Cheers -Ryan

I'm like wtfffff...ain't no way Eddie would even pay that for the shit. I used to get em all day long used for 5-600 lol. My vote - for what it's worth (it all sounds like NOISE to me) is the MESA BOOGIE. It produces that thick, chunky tone (with definition) and immediate response .. best stay with that MB.

Whenever I buy a new amp people ask me to compare it to the Dual Rectifier and a DSL 100HR... either in hopes that there are amps that sound different and possibly better and to hopefully validate their purchase of those 2 amps.
