The Steam Deck section is a weird one at this point. Valve is putting in a lot of effort to open up the platform around SteamOS and Proton. The hardware isn't the only key point there. People buy a Steam Deck to play their steam library on the go or on the couch and there will be hardware from other manufacturers. I don't think there's a huge market share to be lost to Nintendo, which always had their own universe and never really tried hard to directly compete with the other consoles. Nintendo consoles have never been what people buy to play traditional AAA games, so the mandatory ray tracing in some of those games is a weird argument to make imho. I really don't believe many would ditch the Steam Deck for the Switch 2 and start buying all their steam games in the Nintendo Shop instead, just because the hardware might be more powerful at one specific point in time.

Yeah I think it was an oversimplification. 1) people with $1000+ libraries don’t just go to a different platform. 2) a significant portion of steam deck users are pc gamers who will keep using steam and just want something on the go, and 3) there’s literally a more powerful third party steamOS handheld that you can now preorder in the form of the Legion Go S. Release date says Feb 14 on best buy.

I'll be getting a switch 2 just because it had backwards compat with my og switch library including the eshop, although most of my games are physical.

Yea this is in an issue even for people who play on high end desktops, some games are just bad optimized and awful, I already posted about it, valve has nothing to do with it and people should stop buying that bs, but anyway if you check at the market those games aren't even being so profitable because mostly the games that are getting most of the player % are the online ones and typical franchises.

Maybe AAA studios should make games that don't run like crap
@8lec_R

It's a bit of a vicious cycle. Studios that care about high fidelity games make good games... They get praise. So everyone copies them. Now gamers™ expect high fidelity games and most MANGEMENT (not devs) and EXECUTIVES continue to push to 3d, ultra detailed games that are empty and meaningless. Both sides have to give. People who enjoy games have to start boycotting and some studios have to stop this madness. Once a critical mass is reached then the perception of a AAA game needing to be high def will be shattered

@@8lec_R I do agree but it's a hard thing to stop. Having had interactions with more normie gamers in recent time it's a lot of just people with disposable income buying whatever's new, going crazy over the graphics, having fun with it for a week then moving on. It's often people who's not too bothered and can buy the new consoles or pcs. It's a similar case of like, realisitcally you could have a phone from 2018 and do just fine, but people with disposable income buy a new iphone every year. It's just the same crowd. Like remember, until very recently people were freaking out over playstation adding an SSD into their console. Oh no, a three year old handheld, with a full desktop Linux OS that is flexible enough to be used as a PC with a massive catalog of games (from modern all the way up to 50+ year old ones) is outclassed by a brand new console (that hasn't even been released yet). A console that is ultimately a walled garden and only plays games approved by Nintendo. Sooo awful... And in 1-2 years Valve will probably release the Steam Deck 2, which in turn will be a lot more powerful than the Switch 2 (we're talking about Nintendo and its aversion to performance) and the whole game will start all over again. Except that the Steam Deck (2) will still be compatible with well over 30,000+ PC games plus emulation. So Valve really has to come up with something to compete with Nintendo...
@theviniso
@theviniso 7 сағат бұрын
I don't think Valve and Nintendo are even competitors to be honest. The Deck is very cool indeed but at the end of the day, it's still a computer. People who buy Nintendo hardware, or any gaming console really, want ease of use above all else. Both are handhelds, sure, but they're still different products for different consumers.

Don’t forget that there is actually a more powerful steamOS handheld coming out this month, the Legion Go S. From what we know from Leaks. The Switch 2 is not going to be more Powerful than the Steam Deck. Its basically just a Switch with 3 times the RAM and still no dedicated VRAM. The Steam Deck has 8GB of RAM and 5GB of VRAM, yeah thats only one more Gig of RAM but thats still 5 Gigs that are Solely dedicated to Video/Gaming Activities. Plus tge Switch is an ARM Device Porting PC games to ARM usually Requires Massive Downgrades no matter the Gen of Hardware Case and Point the Borderlands Series on Switch. Also his point about Ray Tracing is based on the new Indiana Jones Game, that game was a Comercial Failure. Lastly though I agree a Switch 2 won't kill the Steam Deck. The Mainstream Media Seems to still not Realize. You buy a Steam Deck for Completely different Reason than a Switch and both a Priced where the Average Consumer can afford both. There is a Multitude of Reasons but primary ones are a Gateway to PC Gaming for people who don't want to deal with Windows, hitting the Backlog, or the many different kinds of Retrogaming. The Steam Deck dropping in Sales was also a Glitch in Valve's Store Server. Its still the 4th best Selling Thing on Steam. Also. We really need to stop Saying the Steam Deck 2 is just around the Corner. Valve keeps saying their waiting for APUs to get a Significant Performance Boost and Currently the Only APU powerful enough for that is to Expensive to put in a Steam Deck 2 and keep it Affordable. Valve learned their Lesson with trying to make Premium Machines back with the Steam Machines it was not worth it. Its why I expect Fremont to Probably have 3 Tiers. Tier 1 just an APU maybe a large enough Case to fit a GPU, though given the Average Consumer will try to shove an Nvidia Card in it instead of AMD, probably not. Tier 2 Probably will have either a Custom RX7500/9050 with a little bit more VRAM or just RX7600/9060 abd Tier 3 Probably either 7700XT 12GB or 7800 16GB non XT model to stay out of the Premium Range of Hardware.

@@TheXipherZero valve is still a for-profit company, they’ll release a deck 2 if it makes sense to do so. If third party steamOS devices turn out to be a success, then there’s not much reason for them to start selling an equivalent device down the line.

All human artists/musicians get inspiration from and copy the styles of other artists/musicians, but when AI does it, suddenly it's copyright infringement. Of course, artists complaining that they're not making enough money is a old as art itself and the artists that are making lots (because they're good) are strangely quiet, not complaining at all - funny that. All the millions of underpaid artists are of course geniuses and every single one of them deserve to be a globally recognised, highly successful, multimillionaire, just ask them. So yes, of course they're being ripped off, especially if nobody even appreciates their art - doubly so.

Deepseek hasn't stolen OpenAI's dataset, they got it from the same place... the internet. That's like saying I copied your work because we have the same source material. OpenAI claims Deepseek R1 was trained with o1 reasoning output, that's the chain-of-thought what you see R1 output before giving you a final answer. There's just a problem, o1 doens't output it's chain-of-thought. Also Mistral AI reviewed Deepseek's research paper on R1, plus the weights are open. And there's more proof supporting Deepseek R1 was trained on Deepseek V3 than it was on anything OpenAI did. Finally AI has no right to copyright, and thus anything it outputs is public-domain.

As a gamer I am so disgusted over the games since years ago NOT being optimized for PC and simply getting awful ports that runs underwater. Graphic card companies gave us options to make older or cheaper graphic cards run better games and the game devs decided that they would use those new features to make it mandatory for the games to even run decent on newer cards. I stopped buying those games then and moved into the indies and older titles or new ones that support lower hardware and are really optimized to be run on standard gaming gear.

Same with the replies to this comment. Notice how the "diversity of opinion" people only like to defend abusive and harmful "opinions", but never opinions calling them out. And they like to use "diversity of opinion" to should over people who call for a diversity of people and experience (race, class, gender, ability/disability, ...). It is almost as if actual diversity is threatening to them so they pretend their "opinions" of being anti-diversity is some sort of diverse opinion when it is really an opinion that upkeeps the status quo. That said, I'm not saying that company diversity statements are perfect. For a lot of them, they only keep diversity at the bottom of the company while perpetuating the same systems of abuse that keep marginalized people down and they tend to ignore class and sometimes ignore disability. Those companies can do a lot better, but many for profit companies don't because they don't want to give actual support as resisting systems of oppression can hurt their priveledge and bottom line. But the issue was never that they have diversity statements (the issue is that they don't change their business to be equitable and meet the diverse needs of people and continue to pay low wages when they make a lot). Another issue is that with almost all companies, the idea of diversity still being contained to what largely white, able-bodied, relatively well off, men are comfortable supporting when equity and inclusion needs priveledged people to face their discomforts with their own priveledge and how they benefit from systems and structures that harm others.

Would be cool if computer stores hired software experts to handle customer requests such as certain Linux distros and features. Out home shop here sadly only offer Windows 11 in 4 different flavours but I hope they can last long enough to add other distros to their services.

I love GNOME but I still view it as unacceptable that in 2025 it does not ship a functional system tray of some sort. This is massive to me and I'm not quite sure why it seems to be low priority. I get that the current implementation through an extension is "broken", but at a certain point I will take the broken system tray over nothing at all. I totally agree with the design philosophy of the project but this is one thing I won't budge on. While I hate how apps use the system tray and think it's an anti-pattern (when i click "X", an app should CLOSE!) the reality is so many tools on Linux rely on it.

I get that technology changes and it is silly to expect new games to run on an ancient hardware (not talking about steam deck there). But having RTX as a REQUIREMENT (which means you probably can't turn off raytracing) is a line for me. I have 3080Ti myself and even use rtx and dlss here and there, but I am NOT gonna buy a game where you don't have an option to turn rtx off. I am a part-time 3D designer. And I know enough about baking, retopology, normal maps, roughness maps, bump maps, displacement maps, light, materials etc. to see "rtx mandatory" as "we clearly lost sight of how to optimise games and just fix our crooked craftwork with new hardware and proprietary dlss 4 solutions, because money and laziness"

Nintendo games are really cool. They are not these movie like action adventures with the plot being pre written by the authors. The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario, Metroid, Donkey Kong series of games are more of the experience you live through yourself where you create your own story just for yourself. I like it, but there is no way i'm buying nintendo consoles or cartridges. I don't want to support a company that does illegal stuff to emulators of its systems

i feel its time to decouple drivers from the kernel just for the control argument. gives you the ability to nuke and reinstall a driver. If done well i dont think it will have issues with performance. To me a kernel should contain interfaces for software (the OS) and drivers to talk to the kernel. A kernel should also have basic drivers. A bit like the Microsoft Basic display adapter thing. Nothing fancy. Just so it works. Yes it will be a massive amount of work to split the 2 if it were to happen. But wouldnt it make kernel dev easier? As it doesnt contain all these drivers? Like set a standard of how a driver should interact with the kernel and thats that. Let whoever else develop the driver using that standard.

Their wording implied they already attempted. It's not hard, since the dkms abi/API is designed for things like that, by providing an API very close to the internal Linux LKMS API.

Switch two appeal more to console gamers and Steam deck to PC gamers. OFC there is an overlap. I think Steam Deck needs a second iteration not because of Nintendo, is just because PC game developers do not tend to optimize well their games and steam deck is suffering that.

Debian leaving X is hilarious. Saying that X is bad because they can't moderate peoples replies is silly. Who cares if what random people say doesn't line up with their values? You can easily hide posts on X and block people if they wanted, but I guess they wanted more. Bluesky and mastodon being their new "home" is equally hilarious, since it is well known there is... uh... suspicious, content on there. X is one of the most popular platforms for communication. They are only hurting themselves. This is obviously in relation to Elon Musk, which although I don't really like some of the stuff he did in the past, he obviously isn't some guy who wants to inflict harm on any group of people. Frankly bringing awareness to this causes more harm to them imo, makes them look incompetent.

I understand the general point behind the Steam Deck vs Switch 2 conversation; but to me the switch 2 doesn’t really compare? When I buy a game on my steam deck, I may also play that game on my laptop or my desktop or any other computer I will ever own. I get to pick the hardware I wish to run it on and even the OS. On the switch, I’d be locked to what Nintendo decides is their hardware choice for the next 8 years. This just doesn’t make sense to me (but I’m also a big old nerd)
@orange-
@orange- 8 сағат бұрын
It was such a weird spec focused take that completely missed the mark on the purpose of both devices and how people use them. Steam is just not comparable at all with Nintendo handhelds. The approaches (and I am guessing the market) are entirely different. Nintendo has for a very long time has had this focus on opening up gaming to different groups and with the switch is very party/local coop leaning, which is totally different from the single play/online play and accessing their back catalog/already existing library that the steam deck provides. We don't even need to compare specs if these worlds are with very little overlap. Honestly, both Valve and Nintendo could collaborate on projects for their respective systems and I doubt it would effect the sales negatively of either. The steam deck specs matter due to the ongoing need to compete with other products in the PC market and the on-going push towards more resource usage, but with the Switch its waaaay more focused on refining and getting the most that can be gotten out of a set of specific and standardised hardware. Its pretty nut's to think that just because lots of games release on both that they will eat each others hardware sales beyond if they release around the same time and people who would buy both need to pick which they buy first lmao

@@orange- I get what you mean but there is definitely an overlap of the consumer base, although I don’t know how big or small that overlap is. Case and point: I have a decent switch game collection (around 30 games iirc) and yet since purchasing the Steam Deck that collection has not increased by a single game. The existence of the steam deck has rendered the switch irrelevant to me for the most part. To be fair, this is my experience and, as previously stated, I am a big old nerd who spends probably too much money on computers
@orange-
@orange- 7 сағат бұрын
@@Ghuze_ Yeah I absolutely agree that there are likely quite a few people who are similar to you that replaced their Switch with the Steam Deck, and that there are many who maintain and use both. But I simply cannot fathom the idea that the bulk of Switch owners care about the Steam deck or perhaps even know it exists. And possibly the inverse is true too with Steam Deck users as a whole not wanting or caring about the Switch, they are both just very different products even if they fulfil a similar function i.e. they both play games.

People buy consoles for the simplicity when compared to computers and they buy Nintendo hardware for Nintendo games. The Switch and the Deck are not really competitors.
