The Steam Deck section is a weird one at this point. Valve is putting in a lot of effort to open up the platform around SteamOS and Proton. The hardware isn't the only key point there. People buy a Steam Deck to play their steam library on the go or on the couch and there will be hardware from other manufacturers. I don't think there's a huge market share to be lost to Nintendo, which always had their own universe and never really tried hard to directly compete with the other consoles. Nintendo consoles have never been what people buy to play traditional AAA games, so the mandatory ray tracing in some of those games is a weird argument to make imho. I really don't believe many would ditch the Steam Deck for the Switch 2 and start buying all their steam games in the Nintendo Shop instead, just because the hardware might be more powerful at one specific point in time.

Yeah I think it was an oversimplification. 1) people with $1000+ libraries don’t just go to a different platform. 2) a significant portion of steam deck users are pc gamers who will keep using steam and just want something on the go, and 3) there’s literally a more powerful third party steamOS handheld that you can now preorder in the form of the Legion Go S. Oh no, a three year old handheld, with a full desktop Linux OS that is flexible enough to be used as a PC with a massive catalog of games (from modern all the way up to 50+ year old ones) is outclassed by a brand new console (that hasn't even been released yet). A console that is ultimately a walled garden and only plays games approved by Nintendo. Sooo awful... And in 1-2 years Valve will probably release the Steam Deck 2, which in turn will be a lot more powerful than the Switch 2 (we're talking about Nintendo and its aversion to performance) and the whole game will start all over again. Except that the Steam Deck (2) will still be compatible with well over 30,000+ PC games plus emulation. So Valve really has to come up with something to compete with Nintendo...
@theviniso7 сағат бұрын
I don't think Valve and Nintendo are even competitors to be honest. The Deck is very cool indeed but at the end of the day, it's still a computer. From what we know from Leaks. The Switch 2 is not going to be more Powerful than the Steam Deck. Its basically just a Switch with 3 times the RAM and still no dedicated VRAM. The Steam Deck has 8GB of RAM and 5GB of VRAM, yeah thats only one more Gig of RAM but thats still 5 Gigs that are Solely dedicated to Video/Gaming Activities. Plus tge Switch is an ARM Device Porting PC games to ARM usually Requires Massive Downgrades no matter the Gen of Hardware Case and Point the Borderlands Series on Switch. Also his point about Ray Tracing is based on the new Indiana Jones Game, that game was a Comercial Failure. Lastly though I agree a Switch 2 won't kill the Steam Deck. The Mainstream Media Seems to still not Realize. You buy a Steam Deck for Completely different Reason than a Switch and both a Priced where the Average Consumer can afford both. There is a Multitude of Reasons but primary ones are a Gateway to PC Gaming for people who don't want to deal with Windows, hitting the Backlog, or the many different kinds of Retrogaming. The Steam Deck dropping in Sales was also a Glitch in Valve's Store Server. Its still the 4th best Selling Thing on Steam. Also. We really need to stop Saying the Steam Deck 2 is just around the Corner. Valve keeps saying their waiting for APUs to get a Significant Performance Boost and Currently the Only APU powerful enough for that is to Expensive to put in a Steam Deck 2 and keep it Affordable. Valve learned their Lesson with trying to make Premium Machines back with the Steam Machines it was not worth it. Its why I expect Fremont to Probably have 3 Tiers. Tier 1 just an APU maybe a large enough Case to fit a GPU, though given the Average Consumer will try to shove an Nvidia Card in it instead of AMD, probably not. Tier 2 Probably will have either a Custom RX7500/9050 with a little bit more VRAM or just RX7600/9060 abd Tier 3 Probably either 7700XT 12GB or 7800 16GB non XT model to stay out of the Premium Range of Hardware.

I've read some posts from there and the amount of fantasizing about violence towards ethnic or politically different groups is something that would get you instantly investigated by the police if it wasn't anonymous - however there is absolutely no consequence to these people by bsky moderators. Same with the replies to this comment. Notice how the "diversity of opinion" people only like to defend abusive and harmful "opinions", but never opinions calling them out. And they like to use "diversity of opinion" to should over people who call for a diversity of people and experience (race, class, gender, ability/disability, ...). It is almost as if actual diversity is threatening to them so they pretend their "opinions" of being anti-diversity is some sort of diverse opinion when it is really an opinion that upkeeps the status quo. That said, I'm not saying that company diversity statements are perfect. For a lot of them, they only keep diversity at the bottom of the company while perpetuating the same systems of abuse that keep marginalized people down and they tend to ignore class and sometimes ignore disability. Those companies can do a lot better, but many for profit companies don't because they don't want to give actual support as resisting systems of oppression can hurt their priveledge and bottom line. But the issue was never that they have diversity statements (the issue is that they don't change their business to be equitable and meet the diverse needs of people and continue to pay low wages when they make a lot). Another issue is that with almost all companies, the idea of diversity still being contained to what largely white, able-bodied, relatively well off, men are comfortable supporting when equity and inclusion needs priveledged people to face their discomforts with their own priveledge and how they benefit from systems and structures that harm others.

A kernel should also have basic drivers. A bit like the Microsoft Basic display adapter thing. Nothing fancy. Just so it works. Yes it will be a massive amount of work to split the 2 if it were to happen. But wouldnt it make kernel dev easier? As it doesnt contain all these drivers? Like set a standard of how a driver should interact with the kernel and thats that. Let whoever else develop the driver using that standard.

On the switch, I’d be locked to what Nintendo decides is their hardware choice for the next 8 years. This just doesn’t make sense to me (but I’m also a big old nerd)
@orange-8 сағат бұрын
It was such a weird spec focused take that completely missed the mark on the purpose of both devices and how people use them. Steam is just not comparable at all with Nintendo handhelds. The approaches (and I am guessing the market) are entirely different. Nintendo has for a very long time has had this focus on opening up gaming to different groups and with the switch is very party/local coop leaning, which is totally different from the single play/online play and accessing their back catalog/already existing library that the steam deck provides. We don't even need to compare specs if these worlds are with very little overlap. Honestly, both Valve and Nintendo could collaborate on projects for their respective systems and I doubt it would effect the sales negatively of either. The steam deck specs matter due to the ongoing need to compete with other products in the PC market and the on-going push towards more resource usage, but with the Switch its waaaay more focused on refining and getting the most that can be gotten out of a set of specific and standardised hardware. Its pretty nut's to think that just because lots of games release on both that they will eat each others hardware sales beyond if they release around the same time and people who would buy both need to pick which they buy first lmao

Case and point: I have a decent switch game collection (around 30 games iirc) and yet since purchasing the Steam Deck that collection has not increased by a single game. The existence of the steam deck has rendered the switch irrelevant to me for the most part. To be fair, this is my experience and, as previously stated, I am a big old nerd who spends probably too much money on computers

@@Ghuze_ Yeah I absolutely agree that there are likely quite a few people who are similar to you that replaced their Switch with the Steam Deck, and that there are many who maintain and use both. But I simply cannot fathom the idea that the bulk of Switch owners care about the Steam deck or perhaps even know it exists. And possibly the inverse is true too with Steam Deck users as a whole not wanting or caring about the Switch, they are both just very different products even if they fulfil a similar function i.e. they both play games.

People buy consoles for the simplicity when compared to computers and they buy Nintendo hardware for Nintendo games. The Switch and the Deck are not really competitors.
