i disagree with the scribe being at the fifth spot. Scribes were the only ones that could read or write which is an important skill that thus permeated every layer of civilization and most of them ended up in the palace with the king. I'd put them above merchants, but that's just me
@joanopoly69958 жыл бұрын
I agree +Brian Plank, because scribes were entrusted to write as the king dictated. I also believe they were in the #3 position, directly under priests (my apologies @Spotlight). Maybe Keith edulifted that list from a Family Feud episode: "What are the seven Sumerian social classes (for men-ugh), in highest to lowest rank?" Great ed. resource, +Keith Hughes!

I was just showing this video to my 6th grade SS class and said the exact same thing about the scribes. They were definitely higher in social rank than merchants and artisans. First off, it was mostly the rich kids that were sent to school to learn to read/write cuneiform. Also, there were very few people in society at that time that received an education, distinguishing them once again from the people they were surrounded by.

I hated that you made me feel like I was watching a “Mesopotamia for dummies” video. Haha. But seriously, I was looking for a good overview of Mesopotamia before watching detailed documentaries on it. And you nailed it. I wish my teachers in high school enjoyed teaching history as much as you do. It probably would’ve made learning history more unlike the chore it seemed to be back then, and more so the pleasure it is for me today. I’m just finding out how cool this stuff is. A shame.

Mesopotamian gods are not user friendly! Might explain all of the human sacrifice. MrHhistoryrescue
@annaabrams87385 жыл бұрын
Actually human sacrifice in Mesopotamia was extremely rare throughout most of its history, the vast majority of sacrifices made where with animals like goats, pigs and bulls. Even when human sacrifice did occur, it was not necessarily to a God. For example in Sumer between 3000bc and 2300bc, when the high priest would die, they would kill all of servants and bury them with him as if they were his property. Not saying Sumerian gods were particularly kind or moral though, they are often anything but.

Were large, domesticatable animals indigenous to The Fertile Crescent eg horses, cattle, sheep and goats? And were large-seeded grasses, wheat and barley indigenous as well? Add a dependable water supply to the mix as well as a temperate climate could it be that this geography would lead civilization by natural selection? In other words you have the time to invent mathematics, writing, etc when your number one priority is not starving to death.

Almost all history teachers here in the Philippines are paid to not teach history. What the Filipino history teachers will do is to divide the chapters of the history books to the students and the student will report the whole history lesson from the start of the school year up to the last school days. What the Filipino history teacher do is to just give grades. It's like they're judges and they will just give grades based on your report. In short, the students teach their fellow students the whole school year.
