As usual, an outstanding video. All MLS fans should be subscribed to your channel. I also thoroughly agree with you. No more TAM, no more GAM, no more discovery lists, allocation order, etc. Just a hard $50 million salary cap per team and keep the U-23 initiative so that young players don't count against the cap. One and done. Clean and simple.

I think they should start to phase out the DP altogether. It is ridiculous to me that Toronto had to spend all that on one 2 players because league rules won't let them spread the money around. $50 million cap with escalating luxury tax like other American leagues. Money to be spent however the club wants. Smaller market can try for 15 guys all solid to form a very good team, and some will spend half their salary on one or two superstars.

@@Sempuukyaku I agree with the sentiment (MLS rosters need to bulk up). The trouble is that MLS is dragged down by small owners who demand parity. There are teams not even spending $10 million. Messi + Apple should usher in a new phase of MLS growth/spending, but realistically, it's gotta be incremental.

Man, I can't believe it took Leo Messi to bring the Tampa Bay Mutiny back from the dead! In all seriousness, I'm really curious to see how Messi handles the league, once the time comes. I'm not entirely confident he can magically save Miami's current season, but next year could be something big. Just in general, Miami's aiming to be America's next big hub city (ala NYC and LA), and that will no doubt make it an attractive destination for international athletes, especially soccer players.

I honestly believe Busquests and Di Maria will come. Both players seemed ready to announce their next move when Messi announced he is coming. Since then there has been no news on either player. Messi annoinced, but Miami have an open DP slot. However, if the league is already working on or in principle have deals with these guys, they would tell them not to let it out since other moves are required to get them on the team.

Before criticizing Lionel Messi, it's paramount to look at the empirical data. Messi's brilliance on the field is reflected through a dazzling array of statistics. He has created 152 chances, which is a staggering number compared to Haaland's 50. In addition, Messi is second in dribbling stats, only surpassed by the talented Vinicius Jr. He also leads in Ligue 1 for assists and boasts an unmatched average rating of 8.2 in top-flight football. Let's not overlook his aerial dominance, having won 32 aerial duels which is significantly higher than the combined total of Kylian Mbappe and Haaland. These statistics unequivocally demonstrate that Messi's football acumen and skills remain extraordinary, making him an incredibly strong contender for the Ballon d'Or. However, the discourse must also include the outstanding Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian maestro has been a linchpin for Manchester City with his impeccable vision, passing, and shooting abilities. As De Bruyne continues to excel into his 30s, it’s worth arguing that his consistent performance merits recognition through the Ballon d'Or. In conclusion, while Messi’s exceptional statistics make him a formidable candidate for the Ballon d'Or, it is important to also celebrate and acknowledge the sustained excellence of players like Kevin De Bruyne. Football is a treasure trove of talents, and appreciating the diversity and depth of these talents is what makes the sport so beloved."

The only problem with it is that Miami has done nothing in the league to deserve Messi beyond location and being David Beckhams team. They have been disfunctional and bad on the field and they get the absolute best Christmas present ever. I would not complain if Messi went to LA Galaxy because (though they are disfunctional right now), they have a history that suggests that this bad period is only temporary. Ultimately, this move is going to ruin the parity in the league and its just going to be Miami, NYCFC, RBNY, LAG, and LA Galaxy fighting for MLS Cup in a few years. Teams with history and culture like Seattle, Portland, New England, etc. will be left behind.

That's almost certainly Messi's choice. Miami, NY or LA are probably the most attractive destinations to move to. That's always going to be a factor for the league. But it also suggests that Miami and possibly Orlando and Austin have a bright future ahead in terms of signing players.

messi coming to the MLS is cool but i doubt it will change the popularity of the MLS or soccer in the US by much. The two biggest things keeping the MLS and soccer in the US back are the "no relegations" policy and the "salary cap" policy. These two policies basically completely remove the competitive aspect for the clubs and degrade the skill level of the games (which obviously results in a much worse viewing experience). Clubs secretly love these policies because it allows them to get away with putting in minimal money, effort, and risk, all the while still getting the most $ from TV contracts, for basically all perpetuity (due to not having to worry about getting relegated ever). Technically having no relegation system + having salary caps makes for a more "fair" competition (which is why its believed to be good), but it does so by degrading the level of skill. In soccer (and generally in all low scoring sports, as opposed to high scoring sports such as basketball) we value skill over fairness. I dont give a shit if a club has an unfair advantage because they have more money, im still entertained by seeing the high level of skill their team displays. The entertainment from soccer really comes from watching plays & goals. The more skillful, the more entertaining. In high scoring sports such as basketball you generally dont care so much about individual plays or scores, because they happen so frequently. I think the entertainment comes more from the overall experience, seeing your team beat out other by effort, not necessarily bought skill. Its only fun seeing your team do well if you know its a fair competition. Thats why it makes sense the MLB to have no relegation system. Its not that soccer doesn't value a level of fairness or that basketball doesn't value skill, its just that i think they prioritize them differently.

Speaking from Argentina. You guys don't even need to do anything fancy. Just don't f# it up and make it last. In time, the south american, african and european immigration it's gonna have weight in the sports habits of your country. Whether you like it or not, most immigrants coming to you for the past 30 years watch football, not NFL and not baseball. Sure, some of them will "integrate" into what the locals watch, but as long as you keep the MLS working, many are gonna just start going there. Also, for all the jokes football gets in the US, it's the easiest sport to play when you're a kid. No matter how poor you are, all you need is open space, some old sweaters (to put on the grass as posts) and a ball...in fact....you don't even need a ball! just kicking an empty bottle, an empty soda can works just fine when you're a kid. That's how I played with friends many times, specially at school where you weren't allowed to bring a ball to class.

IMO that doesn't come from bringing players into your league, or England would have won a World cup in the last 30 years. A year ago I would've said I wouldn't want Messi in the MLS, because of the whole 'retirement league' trope. But now I am officially hyped! But I think the key now is to use Messi to attract in new young players, not older star players. You have Messi now, you don't need Neymar, you need the next Messi or Neymars that are currently still in Brazil, Argentina or elsewhere. The MLS can attract them now, but it's a short window of opportunity. I'm not saying they should turn down Di Maria or Neymar if they want to come, but instead of spending 100mil on Di Maria, spend that on 10 young talented players. Overspend, if you have to, but bring in young players, and sell them on for profit. MLS has the spending power to have the best scouting system in the World. Here's another idea that occurs to me, it would be interesting to hear others thoughts. How about the teams divide up nations and regions, so say Miami has Argentina, Orlando has Rio in Brazil, LAFC has Santos, NYCFC has the Netherlands, RBNY has Germany and Austria and so on. It doesn't have to be a hard and fast rule, but you might find people from Santos start following LAFC, people from Rio or fans of specific teams start following Orlando and so on. It doesn't even have to be blatant, just a quiet agreement behind the scenes. And those clubs begin to grow their own style from that nations playing style.

A massive deal for MLS, no, Messi isnt in his prime (which was unreal) but even in his mid-30's and changed his role slightly (hes more of a playmaker these days) as we all saw at the world cup, hes still better than 95% of players, and with all due respect to David Beckham his media profile was always bigger than his actual talent, where as Messi was actually the best in the world at one point, its a superb deal for you guys, i dont know how far one player's influence can go (no matter how talented) and one player again no matter how good will fix all of Inter Miami's pronlems (theyve been dreadful so far this season) he'll probably help Josef Martinez as he'll now get some quality service and not look so frustrated in Miami anymore

MLS need to chance 1 simple rule to get really improved, but nobody will want that, and that's simple because usa is not used to that, promotion/relegation, make the access to the first division, not a money thing, but an price thing, something that you earn on the pitch, when the MLS starts to prioritize the level and quality over the money, that is when the sport will improved, if not, it always be a second tier league

That is What We Call FFP (Financial Fair Play) in Football. Generally in Europe it depends from league to league like in La Liga its shit same goes for Ligue 1 but Premiere league is much more flexible, That's why they have not only world class players but also coach coaching there. Let's see if they make the most our of it or not because Saudi is Coming.

When MLS fans critique Bundesliga and other leagues for dominant clubs the criticism is headscratching since their Champions are determined over the whole season and not by a knockout playoffs. They're almost different sports at that point. It affects how the whole season is played and the overall season strategy of clubs. If Bundesliga kept everything else in their league the same but switched to playoffs Bayern would still be massive but wouldn't win every time.
@eksortso
@eksortso Жыл бұрын
Different sports. Don't make me laugh. Bayern would still be the overwhelming favorites going into and through those playoffs. How the betting sites would deal with that, well, we just may get a taste of that in MLS, if Miami can turn their fortunes around in the long term.

Inter Miami did not sign Messi, MLS/Apple/Adidas did... A great addition for the US for sure but this move does confirm that MLS is a glorified exhibition league - meaningless regular season with the majority of teams making the playoffs, no risk due to the absence of relegation, and a complete lack of sporting integrity with teams working together (single entity) to collectively bring a player to the league... Nothing wrong with this but it is the reason why MLS will never be a top league in the world from a sporting perspective. No doubt Messi will have a massive impact but will his move significantly improve the interest in MLS in the long term, I don't think so... I think it will be the case that in 10/15 years MLS will still have to rely on signing an ageing superstar (Mbappe, Haaland etc.) to spur interest once again. Salary caps are in the interest of ownership groups as it reduces the need to invest in squad to be competitive so I don't see any drastic changes happening around that.
@christosnikitakis6675
@christosnikitakis6675 Жыл бұрын
If Messi doesn't spur an interest now, neither will Mbappe nor Haaland in the future. Goat is once in a lifetime. We'll be both dead of old age before another player comes along and takes the Goat title away from Messi. It will take decades of players constantly banging 50 gls a season. 2nd) You have no idea what's about to happen. Messi will be part owner. Which means he will have a say on who the sign from now on. It's funny how both Busquets and Alba left Barca at the same exact moment. Plus Leo has also been talking to DiMaria and Neymar. Give it 1-2 yrs, and in 20#4, even Suarez says he will join Leo. Be patient. There's a lot more to come.

@@christosnikitakis6675 Messi will increase interest - I am not arguing against that, but will that interest be permanent? Busquests, DiMaria, Suarez Alba are all players at the end of the career - so nothing has changed with MLS since the likes of Henry, Lampard, Pirlo has it? Players looking for one final pay check. MLS are unable to sign any players in their prime that is my point. You've listed a bunch of players who are no longer wanted by the top clubs in Europe.

91 gls and 30 assists is a mediocre performance? How about 2019? Or 2021. He beat Lewa because Lewa had a better 2020, NOT 2021. Messi won 2 team championships that year. Copa Del Rey and Copa America. Lewa won only Bundesliga 😭. Messi is the Goat, and you already see the influence he has just by going to another continent. CR goes to Saudi, fails, and nobody cares.
