Hell yes. Here's a 28y old guy, who's been a Messier fan for 21 years. People always tend to forget how dominating Moose was. He didn't need any goons to protect him, he was tough as nails, played power play, short handed.. Anything the team needed to win, Mark did.. And then some :) 1994 forever.

Mark Messier , the best captain ever. I started watching hockey in 1962 (age 8), skating & playing hockey in '64 and went to my first game at the old MSG in 1965, Rangers vs Detroit Red Wings. Guess who scored the game winning goal? Gordie Howe, a 35 foot wrister that went whipping past the NYR goalie. Rod Gilbert, (my favorite Ranger in those days) scored two in a 3-2 loss. Point is, I can make a great all-star team of players I have seen play from 1967 or so to 1995 and Mess is on that team every time.

Classic my opinion holds more weight due to my age so I need to make that known so if anyone disagrées with me, the credentials that exist in my head trump anything you have to say based solely on age. I bet your the type of person to ask younger people how they know some music from the 60's or 70's because they are "too young".

The one goal I remember Mark Messier the most was the goal he scored in Game 3 in the 1984 Stanley Cup Finals against The New York Islanders to tie that game 2-2 because that goal changed the entire momentum of the series. Mark Messier put this move on the Islander defense that was unbelievable. Up to that point The New York Islanders were dominating that game then right after that goal The New York Islanders couldn't stop them for the rest of the series.

Hi guys,..blackhawks fan 40 yrs here,..wardnikoff, good opinion on those guys,.not quite agree but respect em. What i always dug about messier was his toughness, endurance, leadership, and the ability to 'take over'. They can talk gretsky all they want, but i got 'sold' on messier back in 84, when he finally beat another fav team,..the Isles, and again when he took over against my blackhawks and lead Oilers to cup without gretsky. Truly underrated until then,.i'll take a line of messiers anyday.

I like Messier and respect his hall of fame career. he was a virus in the vancouver dressing room sadly as it is common knowledge now, taking Linden's number and also Linden taking it with pure class as is the way he played and lives. Having said all that, the "we'll win tonight" and then getting a 3rd period hat trick is just epic.

I love this guy cause he was a great player, & he helped deliver a Cup to my hometown of New York. It's one of the happiest moments of my life. But, and I don't mean this in a totally complimentary way; he was a dirty player at times. If you look at Bryan Trottier of the Islanders, he dished out hits that were bruising and punishing, and he scored 100 points a year, player the PP, killed penalties, and won a Conn Smythe. Trots instilled the same fear without being nearly as dirty.

Well, Brian Leetch won the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the year in 88-89, & the Norris Trophy in in 91-92 and 96-97. Leetch also scored more than 100 points in 91-92. Sergei Zubov has been a solid defenseman for years. Richter was a great goalie before and after 93-94. Nemchinov scored 30 goals twice with the Rangers, & was solid till the late 90's. Your point about the Rangers benefitting greatly from Edmonton & Chicago is valid, but in my eyes it does nothing to diminish the accomplishment.

How could some poeple say hes the greatest captain ever when from 1997-2004 he captained those Rangers and Canucks team to zero playoff apperances. As for the that Ranger win in 94 1/3 of the team used to play for the Oilers.Anderson,Lowe,Messier,Mc tavish,Graves,Buekeboom and Tikkanen. Also Richter played a hell of a playoffs and leetch won the Con Smythe. He always was the back bone for the Rangers, the last defenceman to record or 100 points in a season.

@Gphazor The thing is sure Messier won the MVP of the playoffs in 84. But in those years im telling you It was all about Gretz he had 4 200 point seasons 48 points in a playoffs and 43 respectively, both wins. Also won 3 canada cup golds. As for Messier captianing 2 teams yes he did that, the only player to do so but the year before 94. Gretz carried L.A to the finals with 40 points (MVP). Had they of not met a hot team like the Habs and Roy in net he would be the greatest player/leader.

Gretzky was phenomenal back then. Messier is a great player no doubt. I've known Mark since we were 14 from our home town St Albert Alberta. Many people don't remember that Mark was on the second line with Anderson. It was Gretzky and Kurri that made the difference. Kurri never got the recognition he deserved. Power plays with Gretz- Kurri - Mess- Coff-Low were unbeatable back then. Loved watching them play. You don't often see 8 Hall of Fame players on one team. As the Islanders before them and Habs before them.

@boskey10 It's all good....Am I biased? Yes. If you are not a Ranger fan...then you can't appreciate what he did for the Rangers. The amount of pressure that the Rangers were under was "unbelievable", the thought at that time was if they can't do it now, it will never happen. To lose again with a superior team, and against the Devils!!! When he said "we will win" and then put up a hat trick...that cemented him as a hockey legend. And then to bring the cup. Only captain 2 different SC's.

I'm guessing Messier did a lot more than be a key scorer in the '84 playoffs, because i don't see how he won the conn smythe trophy over Gretzky. Messier had 26 points while gretzky had 35. I know points isn't everything in a playoff season, but thats why I'm asking. He must have stepped up in something other than the scoring department to win praise over gretzky's performance. Any 80's Oilers fans or hockey historians out there that can help me out?

imagine being messier. no team in the league wanted him after he led the canucks out of the p-offs 3 straight yrs. N.Y. brings him back after they felt he was washed up and he proved he was washed up by leading the rangers out of the p-offs in his last 3 yrs in N.Y. - instead of bowing out gracfully he hung around 7 yrs to long to set personal records. if that's not selfish i don't know what is. he was a great player when playing on a great oiler team and a great golfer when playing in N.Y.

Some idiot (ghytgb) a while back made the comment that the NYR were a team comprised of 14 former Oilers & Black Hawks. Well I ask just this, since when is it ill-legal to make trades and sign free agents? The Adam Graves signing was the most masterful move Neil Smith ever made. The Rangers looked at the stats and Troy Mallette and Gravey were very very similar but Sather wanted much more than Troy (in truth I forget who he was asking for, and I don't feel like looking it up) so it went to arbitration. The arbitrator looks at the numbers only, not potential so the Rangers got their man. Almost every GM in the league knew it was just a matter of time before Graves turned into the stud forward he became as a Ranger, ;ie, the best power forward in hockey for the next 6 years and btw, it would have been longer if not for a very serious back injury which kept Graves from becoming an all-time power forward in the Brandon Shanahan, Kevin Stevens. Keith Tkazcuk mold. Actually in my opinion, GRAVEY WAS BETTER THAN ALL OF THEM at his peak. The Messier trade included Louie Debrusk and Bernie Nicholls and who remembers. Don't forget the Rangers won the cup mainly because of their home grown stars, Richter and Leetch who were the best goalie and defenseman in the world at the time so get over it Devil fan. You can have your 3 cups but you never had a team that would have ever beaten the '94 Rangers. Including the regular season that year, the record was 10-3 NYR and you were lucky to win 2 of them pal.

Saying Howe stepped onto the ice for 5 seconds isn't bitching. The King Clancy award is given out to the player that shows leadership on and off the ice. So why would my helmet be strapped on to tight? You threw that in there with nothing to back it up. I can say you could have used a helmet when you rode the bus to school and back it up. You used the word were when you should have used we're. You used the word maybe when you should have used may be and you put a comma after the word helmet.

@ghytgb Once again you bring nothing new to the table. So I will close with what we already know. Messier=6 time Stanley Cup winner, 2x Hart winner, The only player two Captian 2 teams to the cup. 2nd alltime points, 7th in goals, 2nd games played, 3rd points. Messier is a legend. If the Rangers never traded Gartner for Anderson, Weight for Tikkanen & Amonte for Matteau & Noonan they would have won more cups dummy. Old Oilers & Hawks = early rebuild.
