One of the many greats to ever play the game! As a Rangers Fan I enjoyed watching him play! When my Dad felt like it was time for me to know the players on the team, the first one he pointed out was Mark Messier! Even though I grew up being a Goalie when I played Hockey, Messier always remained a Player I enjoyed watching! A great leader on and off the Ice! He helped turn the Rangers organization around that no matter how bad the history and odds are against the Team. Anything is possible to overcome!

Messier, a class act. I'm happy he was one of the players I loved back in the 80s. This is true love for him. He wasn't in it for the money..

That was incredible. I’ve never seen an induction speech anywhere close to that emotional. All the more remarkable not only because there is no such thing as a pro hockey player that is a pansy, but that he was known for his toughness and physical style even by the standards of his peers. Wow.

He may have been a class act off the ice….he wasn’t a class act on the ice. That said….he was a great, great player. 2nd only to Gretzky on that Edmonton team. It’s astonishing to see him struggle through this speech. I hope it’s not just too many hits to the head. This was 2007….so how is he today?

Messier#11 Best Captain In NHL History!

Potvin doesn't even come close to Messier. 6 Stanley Cups and the only person to Captain 2 teams to a Cup. Messier is the best Captain and leader in NHL history, which is why they have an award named after him now.

A friend of mine found a page of Messiers speach that he left behind stage. It said I want to say I'm sorry to the Rangers for repeatedly failing my annual drug tests and keeping the Rangers down during the five out of ten years that I missed the playoffs. He wrote "I understand Lance Armstrongs pain"! He wrote that he felt bad that he took #11 in Vancouver (when the Rangers dumped me) even though the Wayne Maki family and fans pleaded that I don't wear his #11 after Waynes death. He also wrote that he was sorry for elbowing Madano to the head in order to help his team beat the Stars. He also wrote that he was sorry that he caught VD from that skank Madonna in 93 causing his team to whined up at the bottom of the division. He then wrote that it's a myth that he was called tough even though he couldn't fight.

I have a question: Did Potvin wear those rings when he punched his wife in the head?

Messier is decent (an almost average hockey player), but Captain Crosby is the best captain of all time.

Ah, Nothing like this egocentric athlete that got lucky in NY and had the sportswriters spin pure fiction on his behalf that continues to this day. Not only does he get tons of undue credit, people fail to mention his cowardice and 'elbows' that were regularly displayed on ice. The Messier leadesrship award?! Please! Hey Mess, stop hiding in Rangers front office and get behind the bench if you're such a leader, We all know you need constant attention, but guess not at the expense of your BS image
