In late summer last year, I met up with Kit & Caboodlers for a river wade and dumpsite treasure hunt with glass bottomed buckets.
Not many wonderful finds for me, they got almost all of them, as it was meant to be... still, had a lot of fun messing about on the river with wonderful people.
Their video from the day: • Mudlarking With Tom Bu...

Always a joy to see a video from you pop up, Tom. To be truthful, you could find nothing at all and I would still enjoy the video for the scenery, the sound of running water, and your ever soothing voice talking about anything and everything. How about making a new set of lead soldiers from all your finds?

Thanks Gill, that's a kind sentiment. Afraid I'm not keen on melting the lead I've found, it's a bit dirty and gave off fumes when I tried, that I can't be sure are simply the soil burning off; don't want to poison myself if it's one of the surface compounds of lead, like lead chloride, or oxide.

The creepy doll is a bit terrifying. I liked the info about the toppled trees. I'm pretty sure it will make people think, I hope. In my little rural dump, there is a crude stack of rocks that holds the path above it. The oldest stuff is there. But I wont touch it, its part of the landscape now. Sooo frustrating! Sometimes, the cycle of winter and summer pushes things out of it. I found glass lenses, and an actual pair of gold rimmed glasses. They are minuscule, and in fairly good condition. Amazing stuff moves in weird ways, be it in rivers, or in the movements of frost pushing up the earth.

Thanks Lise, I hope it makes at least some of the bottle diggers think, I know that one of them saw where I pulled out an intact codd bottle, went there, camped in that spot and dug out the entire banking. Feel a little guilty about having led them to a promising spot, but hopefully if they watched that one, then they might watch this one too and take notice. At least that person didn't topple any trees, that I know of. And I'm glad you're considerate of the path, and glad too that your respect for that and your patience is occasionally rewarded . 🙂

Again, many thanks for cleaning the river of lead. It is not good for any of us. Its been warm here as well. We have had every day for almost a month with severe rain storms. And now, temperatures over 110 degrees fahrenheit. But tomorrow, I will be going to the island near my home, St Simons Island is an hour away. And I hope to spend the day there.

Thank you Tom for yet another wonderfully beautiful and soothing video. Please don't fret over not being so "exited" when finding your more special, rare, unique and/or just finds that really appeal to you, reasons be damned... Everyone has their own style and I've come to love yours. Just listening to your calm voice, your "chatting" about this that and everything in between, be it history, comments about your finds or, whatever you feel like verbally sharing with us out here while you're out and about, is always welcome. I have my own personal "issues" and have found that while "joining" you on your larks, watching your "hunts", finds, listening to your voice and taking in what you are talking about, really puts me in a calm state of mind. (I have PTSD) I also love Kit & Caboodlers along with The Northern Mudlarks and yes, I do love to watch and listen to them when they become overjoyed with some of their finds. Reason? You can tell that they are not faking it. It is their real feelings/emotions, something that unfortunately is rare to find nowadays, both online and in real life. After having watched most of your videos/uploads I've finally gotten over my procrastination and subscribed. 🙃❤ Stay safe and happy //Solani

Yes, it's an amazing place for metal. I'm surprised the council that owns it hasn't considered shutting the playing fields on top, and selling it to a mining company for all the metal that's in there. I've found lots of copper, lead, aluminium, iron, and some silver and gold there. 🙂

If you were wondering, I think the small bird is from the Model Home Farm series by Britain's Ltd. The odd leg is also from the same company, it looks to me like it's from a Zulu warrior. Nowadays it's odd to hear these toys referred to as "lead soldiers", traditionally, they are known as "tin soldiers". Although there is some lead in them , it's alloyed with metals like zinc, and tin of course. Every company, like Britain's, CBG, Crescent , etc, had their own formula which they kept secret from competitors. The Model Home Farm series was an outgrowth of the military toys, which had lost popularity following the first world war. All were to a common scale, based on the No.1 guage trains of firms like Bing, Märklin, etc.( Britain's even made the things to build entire garden scenes!).

A fantastic video!! The fossils amaze me,I also wonder what these Ammonites must have looked like,tiny Nautilus,I suppose. I have a small collection,mostly Pyrite,but also sacred Hindu ones,where if you have 200 or more,it automatically qualifies as a pilgrimage site! I don’t have 200,so,thankfully,nobody is knocking at my door,but I have a few nice ones,as my part of America was a shallow sea back when they were doing their thing. Aww,Kit and Caboodlers,they seem so sweet and genuine in their reactions,and you have confirmed this,I never doubted. Sadly, a lot of bottle diggers make a lot of money from bottles... In the thousands sometimes and they completely miss the joy of collecting. Once again, money destroying the environment. I'd love to meet Kate and Fluer and yourself. That little brass finial is a cool thing. I REALLY like the little dove too! It'll be the same sort of scale as my model tractors I think if it's Britains. Hoping to find lead animals when I get more active with searching again...
@tomburleigh9261
@tomburleigh9261 Жыл бұрын
The high end bottle diggers who know where to find the expensive bottles tend to avoid that site, it's not as old as the ones they like to dig. So, the ones cutting roots there really are mostly only finding ones with zero to mid-range collector value. I'll still have the dove whenever you head this way, (or when I head over your way (I'm planning on visiting Blitz beach sometime this autumn, is that somewhere you ever get to?)). Whenever, remind me, and the dove shall be given. I've a few other lead animals that might be to your taste too. 🙂

To be truthful I've not been out alone much recently sadly as I get very anxious around the general public and everywhere is so noisy and busy in the 21st century, but I'd happily meet with you for a lark! I have a local dump that I plan to dig at soon, but I don't like doing it alone so waiting for my friend Jack to visit from Scotland. There are some occasional novelty bits left on the surface from time to time though.

Yes, I'm sure. I like giving away the things that I don't have room to display and don't want to melt. I'll try and remember to arrange something with you when my plans are more firm... I do have a tendency of doing things without plans, but a trip to Blitz beach will require plans. I think the car park near blitz beach may be quite busy and possibly a bit stressful for you, (it's shared with Crosby beach which has Anthony Gormley statues in the sand), but blitz beach itself is quiet and the other mudlarkers keep to themselves. I went there with Caroline and Phil once, pre-pandemic, and no-one talked to us, or even came close. 🙂

Hi Tom, my partner identified the big cog item at the back of your collection of finds in the window, the round wheel with the long ridges. Its a bearing race, in brass, the ball bearings sit in the channels x

Just a suggestion; how about making a mould from an ammonite and using it to cast aluminium copies? I suggest aluminium because it can be polished to a high shine and may make an attractive and curious finished item.

Hi Tom nice to see you on the river with the girls and Oscar. I watch K& C often. I find it interesting the different things people collect. They are mostly looking for smalls for their dollhouse. And when they put it together its pretty cool. Other mudlarks only look for bottles while others are interested in coins. Its absolutly amazing what can be found on a walk down the river😊. On a side note the next time you get a chance to skip a rock or two try this, we used to find the thinest skippers and stack them then try to skip as many as possible. My record is 5 and it was a perfect skip with all 5 skipping about 8 times. Have fun and stay safe thanks✌️

Wow, you mean throwing multiple stones in a stack? I'll certainly have to give that a try. Yes, I seem to be one of the least specialising mudlarks... some days I fancy a coin hunt, sometimes a bottle hunt. Always on the lookout for unusual things, or things I haven't found before; always looking out for wildlife too, and of course, ingredients for crafting and small things for other mudlarkers. I agree, it's certainly cool when K&C put their finds together creating dollhouse things. Hope it's going to be cool too when I finally get some crafting videos finished and out. 🙂

I think I would've loved to of seen the key that went in that hole! I know I'm a little odd for a female, but I'm a diesel mechanic, and now that I'm disabled I sit and make things out of copper and I repair jewelry and I'm just fascinated with things that you guys find thanks for sharing Tonia, Utah, USA

May be a casting project for the brass and copper is four elephants on the back of a turtle with the Discworld as a sundial on top. Lost wax and sand casting moulds for the bits.

Thanks Steve and Mary. That's been in my head as a possible project since I got the forge, think it's one I'll need to work up to though; a multicast project of quite some complexity. It'll most likely be one for if/when I can afford a workshop space. 🙂

Tom may be just start with a small Discworld sundial for now to get your mould making and casting eye in. One of my friends from school and work used to work in the local foundry in town before it closed down as a patten maker/sand mould maker and did cast a few bits and bobs for me, some bike badges and such.

It is so nice when you can meet up with friends and do the things you love to do! Such wonderful area to lark in and interesting finds! I was looking at your bucket and thinking it doesn't have to be so deep. I watch a lot of videos of metal detecting and river walking, and there is a few people who have made their own "window" using a medium to large plastic bowl and some plexiglass, the idea seems good as in another friend who uses those kid float tubes around some pvc tubes shaped into a square and uses a net stretched across it so it is easier to hold and sift sand for finds. I would think it would float in creeks too and would allow you to use the glass bottomed bucket better more hands free. It was just a idea I thought you might be interested in. :) I Love your videos as always.

Thanks Debra. I agree, my bucket is probably too deep. I just used what I had, and might try again with something else. When I met up with James of Find & Create, he was using the glass part of a door off a washing machine🙂. Interesting what you've suggested, I'll have a think and see what I can come up with, with the materials I've got. 🙂

I love your videos! Think I’ve sad so before, but it’s been sometime. Sorry you hurt your back and was layed up, I swear there’s nothing worse than back pain, since I do have a bit pain in my lower back. Funny how when I was young I never suffered from that, and now….age creeps up! Take care! Can’t wait until your ready to post a new video. It was a joy to see Kate and Fluer (sorry spelling). They are such fun to watch!

Thanks caliathebeach, I hope you have a wonderful and happy Summer too. Jet is a form of fossilised wood, somewhat similar to coal but much rarer, less brittle, can be carved and polished into jewellery. There's one place in Yorkshire that's famous for it; Whitby. Don't know of many other places it's found. 🙂
