You know that decluttering and organization can change your life, but I wanted to show you that it doesn't have to be a huge and time-consuming project. I spent two days organizing, cleaning and decluttering this messy storage room and this cluttered craft room.
In just two days, we decluttered, organized and did a complete makeover of both spaces on a tiny budget. I hope this video inspires you to tackle a room in your home today! When you are feeling overwhelmed, remember: Five Minutes Matters. You don't need weeks or even months to get your home under control, you just need to get started!

I lived by that this morning and attacked one very disorganised place in my apartment. Not a whole room - that is far too much, just one space in my living room cabinet. (I can really recommend to only go at it for half an hour or twenty minutes at a time, to net get overwhelmed!) I threw away quite some paper things (I hate throwing that away, but I really, really have to, so I bit the bullet). And I collected a few games that have their place elsewhere, took them there, just to find I had to get at that container, too - as there wasn't enough space in that. So more throwing out (a card game where the cards showed signs from playing and the box was in tatters, and a game I never played since I bought it 30 years ago - so out it went). And while I did not finish that space in my cabinet - I made it definitely better, can do the rest after I return home from work, dust it, reorganize it. I love "not perfect but better" - and I really need to keep in mind that you cannot organize clutter! But just what I did this morning already made a visible difference to my place. One less corner of chaos. It looks organised, not perfect, but as if the things were there for a reason. I can always prettify that later

@@franhunne8929 i suggest the "multiple pass" apprach. Get things in ONE room done, in very manageable steps you choose. Then, go back to where you started and attack it again. Maybe more thrown out, or better organization. Do remember to TOSS before you ORGANIZE. Otherwise, you are organizing clutter, which serves no purpose. GOOD LUCK!

Cass, I only recently stumbled on to Clutterbug and I have been hooked ever since. You are the first person that has ever made the whole "declutter, sort, and organize" make sense for me. I'm definitely a bee, my husband is a ladybug, and daughter is a butterfly. Your categories and philosophy really helped me to understand that we're not messy, we just organize differently. Love these makeovers, they're practical and inspirational. I'm actually tackling my own home one little corner at a time and have shared your videos with others. Wins all around!

Cover the pool (with tarps if that's what it takes), and lay down tarps in the backyard - we harvest mulberries from our trees by laying down tarps because then the berries don't get lost in the grass, but it will make it way easier to collect the pods (I did the same sort of thing in January the night before my mom and I drove my truck home because the truck doesn't have a bed cover yet - all we had to do in the morning before we left was pull the tarp out by the corners and voila! the snow was out of the bed and the bed was completely dry, saving me 1/2-1 hour of work); stake the tarps down if it will be windy at all. There will probably still be seed pods that get in the grass, but it will be a heck of a lot less work to clean up the yard.

If I may, try to "just do it" rather than plan it. Just go in and put in a pile for donation. You will not believe how much you will get done. Pick a time (now is the best) instead of planning a big project go at it, then stop and do more later. Just do it. :) I am rooting for you!!!

I am a total ladybug but my husband is a butterfly. I took your advice and defaulted to his organization style, and now our house is more organized, and he can easily put stuff away. I prefer visual simplicity, but I must say it has really helped me. If I could have everything hidden, I would, but then I have to tell my husband constantly where stuff is. Now that we have are organized with his style in mind, he is empowered to put stuff where it belongs because he can see where it goes. Lol 😆 thanks Cas!!!!

I get her having multiple bug style. She’s probably still in a phase of trying things out. I was her. Detailed w binders, labels, bins but once I lost the interest of sorting and realizing that it’s not doable w small kids and husband. I’ve transitioned to butterfly where everything is out. Making it easy for me and the rest of the family. It’s replicable being everything is just a dump type of organizing.

I love this episode because I don’t feel like I fit any specific category either and have watched the videos on each personality type and I’m a little bit of each or at least 3. I love things hidden but like things to be organized, I keep things I need to get rid of, some things need to be visual, I’m either super organized or a total mess, I also have lists on top of lists of things I want to accomplish but there is so much it’s overwhelming etc. I think I want to be a type A but get too overwhelmed but if I had a magic wand everything would be perfectly organized, labeled, clean lines, etc. Edit: my point is I’m glad I’m not the only one that doesn’t seem to fit in just one category lol

Cas! This video is such great timing considering what project I just finished at 1am before this video released! OK long story time: This past week I was cat-sitting for a neighbor. Turns out the neighbor has an entirely hoarded house (Level 4), and she’s only lived there a year and a half! I told her: “You know, one of my hobbies is decluttering and organizing. If you don’t mind me touching literally everything you own, I’d love tackling these mountains for you.” She said oh my god yes- So this past week I was able to fill 2 medium dumpsters of literal trash (cardboard, moldy wood, old papers, etc.), get sentimental stuff into boxes, and zone her home into: living room, office, art room, and a functional bedroom. I just got to reveal her cleaned, organized, and decorated house to her last night when she returned and she was so happy and shocked! And she’s a bee so I got a pegboard for her Art wall (so now she has a container for all her duplicate supplies), and everything is so beautiful and functional. I listened to all of your videos and Dana and Dawn’s videos as I cleaned- so that was great body doubling! I did the project for free as well because a functional home is priceless! Happy to share this exciting news with you because her life is changed for the better with the power of decluttering!

Karla is such a pure soul. So warmhearted. Thank you for helping this family Cas. The rooms turned out beautiful. I feel the lack of storage space. In my country there are no built in closets, so you have to buy furniture. I moved two times during the last three years and didn't have a wardrobe for all this time, because the budget didn't allow to buy one. I am a cricket and it hurt my soul living out of boxes. You cannot unpack if you have nowhere to put the stuff. I finally got a wardrobe for free last month and I was so thankful. Now everything is extremly tidy as I prefer it to be.

Pure Magic!!! I'd give almost anything to just be able to get ONE ROOM in my home De-Cluttered & Fixed-Up! I mean, Cass, You admitted to being I've welmed in that space with boxes & boxes of Clutter. ***But what about if there's a Room which was our "Deal With it Later" Room. But that was like 5-Years ago & now... I can't even open the door all the way! I definitely can't take more than a tiny Baby-Step inside the door threshold! How do you De-Clutter if there not even room to "Zone" things?

Our house is like your birch tree! The minute we start to make headway, some catastrophe comes out of nowhere to undermine or seriously interrupt the clean-up momentum. *** Could you do a video addressing how one spouse's organizing style, or lack thereof, can sabotage an area once it's been organized? I have ADHD and need a clear, uncluttered system so as not to become overwhelmed. My spouse has no discipline whatsoever when it comes to picking up, putting away, keeping tidy. I'd be interested in hearing how you might handle clients who have majorly conflicting organizing styles.*** Bless you for your great work and positive suggestions.

You are going to have to give up perfection for the back yard. Close is close enough. Don't kill yourself trying to "fix" something that is not fixable. The morning of any open houses, make sure it is picked up mostly. Any seed pods that fall after that, that is the time of year. It will be ok. It is highly unlikely that seeds in the back yard will prevent your house from selling. Not as beautiful as it is everywhere else.

I am a butterfly, but do not have much room in my home to show off all my lovely things, and am really lacking in storage, or any where to put storage! I defiantly have too much stuff, but as I live alone, and only go out of the house to walk my dog, due to acute anxiety, I have to pay someone if I want help, or need to get rid of stuff. I did find out that Oxfam in England will come and pick things up from my home that I am donating, so am starting with that. I love watching your videos, as you are so lovely and happy and inspirational, despite all the things you have on your plate, with your own busy life. Thank you for helping us all. Blessings and hugs from Jilly and licks from Madge the black rescue greyhound, from a hot West Devon, England. xxx

Regarding open house, we just moved. Just remember you only need one buyer to love your house and it’s sold. We sold our house in one day. Thanks for the tip of dealing with one box at a time! 😊

It all looks amazing! I do have a question though...the paper flowers. How do you keep that clean? It'd be covered in dust in a month at my house! 😬
@Clutterbug
@Clutterbug Жыл бұрын
They can be dusted with a swifter duster, or you can blow the dust off with a hair dryer and vacuum. Most of the dust on surfaces actually comes from the floor! Have you ever thought of getting a robot vacuum?

We have a lot of carpet (that I'd like to get rid of), and alot of clutter (I'm working my way through thanks to you!). So I don't know about a robot vacuum right now, though I do want one.

Also Cass, that idea of it’s NOT perfect but better is a game changer, as is sometimes combining 2 types of organizing styles when tackling HUGE messes! Love these videos, they help soooo much! 💕

Very cool. I guess the part I never get is - why would you get rid of furniture from the bedroom before finishing the basement… where you needed storage still!? 🤔
@Clutterbug
@Clutterbug Жыл бұрын
I had already assessed the basement and decided to use an old Kallax unit for storage. The extra dressers and curio cabinets were not something she wanted in her basement. I think she was hoping to sell them one day, but she just never found the motivation.

Cas great you help people😊...those rooms look amazing! But i comment on this ALL THE TIME!... People are not ONE organisation style...I am different styles depending on what the category is! Tip.. cover the pool when clean.. then pods fall on the cover... pull off when viewing starts

Great room makeovers! And your anxiety about getting things perfect to sell your house is exactly why I'm not sure we will ever move from our current house! It seems like so much work just to get things ready to sell it. The song "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" but with the words "Seed pods keep falling on my head" was going through my mind while you were describing your story. It sounds frustrating but hilarious in the retelling. ;) Good luck!

This is such a realistic approach to any kind of problem. In my experience when something is overwhelming, it's best to start small and imperfect than it is procrastinate and never do it! In some point along the way, magic happens... My momentum and self-confidence builds up and then I am practically unstoppable! The other thing I've noticed is tat, even when implementing my first imperfect solution, I get clarity and inspiration and I find it so easy to improve things. My "imperfect" solution acts as a stepping stone towards an better one. I think of it as a first draft of a book. Without a first draft, the masterpiece would never exist ...

Hello from Vancouver Island, I just found your channel a couple days ago, I'm a 45 year old Mom with 4 kids ages 23,21,12&9, my youngest was diagnosed with ASD in 2020, my daughter was diagnosed with ADHD last week and I'm looking into being diagnosed with ADHD myself. My whole house looks like a tornado has hit everything! It's extremely overwhelming! I have never been able to organize. This summer I want to work on decluttering and trying to get organized. I love the polka dots that you put up in the croffice. The big girl room was adorable. Thank you Cas for your videos.

I feel like I just got Yada-Yada'd. For the storage room, I heard, "Room of Doom", "furniture that was here when they moved in" and "tons of stuff" and "We're going to find a home for anything you want to keep, right NOW." Within 15 seconds it was, "Now the room is empty." Whaaaa??? 😅😆 Also, I loved the ending the most. Thanks for keepin it real, Cass! I would have pictured you, as a pro organizer, breezing into an open house with a flowy dress and a mocktail, saying, "What, this? No, the house always looks like this!" 🤣

See, my cluttered mind went, "WHY are you getting rid of the shelving you put into the garage when you could have used it in the basement?!?!?" I'm also a tightwad, though. I took the quiz & it says I'm a butterfly & my brain works differently....but when you're a tightwad butterfly it's REALLY hard to get rid of anything because I am constantly thinking of ways to repurpose whatever I have. I think it helps to know that I've been dirt poor my whole life, living paycheck to paycheck, & I refuse to buy something new if I can either repurpose or diy. Not that anyone asked my opinion...😂The house looks great by the way. But you always do such a wonderful job. I dare you to come to my home, though. You'd probably have a heart attack. 🤣🤣🤣

Oh how I have enjoyed watching back to back videos from you. The first was ADHD organizing I believe and then this one. I suffer with pain and (likely ADHD too) any my spaces are unorganized. While I am getting better, I need help purging and decluttering. I want to hire a housekeeper to help since I can not clean the way I like, but in all honesty, I MUST get a handle on things first. Where might you be located ~ I love your energy and vibe AND I could use the help. Lord, please let her be MY neighbor too! LOL Blessings!
