If we're doing this again I need a bigger ranking board 😤 so many more looks I wanted to mention!! I apologize if I left any of your faves out but as you can see we were already reaching "this is why I have nearsightedness" level of image sizes 😮‍💨 I wanted to make this video because I feel the *volume* of human labour, skill, expertise that goes into well-made clothing feels a little overlooked in fashion reviews, and all I can ever wish for people who sew is that they may see the fruits of their labour. That being said I also mean for this to be light-hearted as I am obviously just a DIY gal trying to have fun and learn things with her sewing machine ✌

I am so glad this review emphasized the level of the technique/expertise. The reviews I have seen thus far while complimenting (or not) the fashion worn was mostly concerning, "did it fit the theme". After watching several of these Galas, I feel that there is a secret text/email/phone call to all the stylists and most of the designers that says, do NOT do any research on the theme or its history. Thank you for looking at the fashion from a different viewpoint.

Especially because this year was a year when the theme was more easily understood *and* Lagerfeld has some very strong visual identities - he would, as a designer, but even among designers there is his personal style and his link to Chanel which has its own icons like the camellia -that made the question of “is it on theme?” less of a conversation than usual. I understand many people enjoying straight opinions on the appearance, but I personally prefer the added education of an expert. So this approach is perfect and I am a happy new subscriber!

there's also a bunch of different types of satin! i don't use *anything* but bridal satin-has a nice weight for draping and the shine isn't totally obnoxious

@@BoReNoWr yes it would help a bit, still might not be totally perfect because it needs to be stretched the same bc if a part of it was looser the cut would be uneven. However i did not have proper fabric weights to hold it down, i was doing it myself and i had quite a lot of fabric so it was rather difficult. still did it tho! Also, not a stupid question! very valid question. i am happy to answer the best i can.

This and HauteLeMode are the only Met Gala reviews I really like because of the thoroughness of the reviews. So many channels have gotten the "do not recommend this channel" boot because they just review it as hot or not. That's how much I hate lazy fashion reviewers. P.S. I disagree with the ranking of Kim K's dress because to me it looks like she put on Spanx and pearls from the dollar store and said "yeah, this will work" and the wrap doesn't absolve that sin.

As someone who sews, I loved that this was sewing themed- I think the public can really lump the celebrity into best or worst dressed- and from this point of view we understand the details that go into hit or miss. I agreed with every single point and enjoyed this video beginning to end immensely. The under track music was also on point 💯🖤

I agree. I feel bad for the people who made the clothes when the outfits get dragged by people who don't know how much work goes into things. Backless dresses look simple, but the tailoring needed to fit them so they don't just slide down is highly underrated. There are a lot of gowns from this year where the tiny details are not apparent on camera too.

What impresses me is how Wendy explains all the details and their level of intricacy in such an objective way possible. It's easy to say you like or don't like those outfits, but as far as I'm concerned she's so far one of a few, if not the only one, who reflect on whether they can recreate the looks and appreciate the efforts behind them. Poor Rosé was also dressed like a YSL shopping bag last year... I feel like a lot of designers bring on these kpop stars just for the Asian clout and aren't actually that interested in working with them beyond slapping their faces on ads.

@@noway3128 To me, YSL actually adore Rosé a lot and having her in Met gala last year was such an honor. I agree that currently there are quite many brand ambassadors who are new Kpop idols with minor impact (compared to some other groups/individuals), but for BP it has always been something else. They are one of the first groups making there way to the world of high end fashion and since then many other groups have been following that path (All my girls received too much criticism back then for being "fashion models", not singers and now everyone wants to be like them, no shade😂). They have worn custom-made items, million-dollar jewelry, and now archive items, which almost no one in K-pop have ever achieved. Last year, the whole YSL gang were not so impressive as their attires didn't fit the theme and the glamorous vibe of Met Gala, which wasn't something new as YSL has always been like that 😂. But for Rosé, it was her first time being there and they customized her a cute mini dress that complimented her figure, that was everything I could ask for. The dress was simple but she ate it and made a huge impact on social media back then. Just like Jennie this time, whenever all the big names try to go big and loud, you-a newcomer choose to do the otherwise, that's how you make people remember about you the most (they were both the most-mentioned celebrities at Met Gala). These mini dresses seem easy but if not BP, I don't know who could actually make them work perfectly like that. So yeah, they slayed with just a mini dress and they had their highlight moments at Met Gala. That's it for me. Now I actually want to see Lisa and Jisoo going to Met Gala next year 😂

I really liked this ranking a lot. Fashion can be so abstract but craftsmanship is concrete. When people wear "custom" looks it doesn't always mean well-made or detailed. Most of them are quite literally t-shirt dresses. Can you imagine if someone walked in with a fully crochet gown or suit that looks like tweed but looks Chanel? That would have been a winner. Not a lot of imagination this year...

Its hard to really see the quality of fabrics and techniques from still photos. Seeing them live and/or in motion would give so much more information. I imagine all outfits have so many hours of hard work behind them, by skilled people that won’t be recognised. I personally liked Emilys outfit! The mix of garments and divide of black and white, both detailed and classic clean at the same time. I agree that the bow is stealing a bit too much attention though. There are so many ways to rate these outfits. This is just one angle.

Shocked the dua lipa bride look didn’t make it to delusions of diy. With all the great knowledge being shared online about how to make good corsets/bones bodices, my first thought was “I could make that if I tried hard enough”

I think the difference is it could be a simple enough dress to make but what makes it so special is how well it fits which another challenge altogether I suppose! And also it doesn’t look diy in the « lets just thrift flip this real quick and add accessories » kind of way, if any « home sewist » made a dress this well most people wouldn’t think that they made them themselves because it looks truly well made and elegant! diy isn’t necessarily badly connoted either but that’s how I interpreted this category like any beginner sewist could patch things together quickly to make the final look. Don’t think the dua lipa would fit that category

It's an iconic dress from the '90s. Imo, it was styled better on the runway. The ginormous necklace didn't work with it, and Dua's hair needed to be swept up or something other than just hanging there. The bodice actually has more detail than it appears to have. It's hard to see on camera.

Glen Close was as "fashion school fundamental" for me. It's a lot of fabric, but the design was straightforward. Same with Kim K. Apart from the skill of the cape, the fit itself is just beads. Honestly, the pearls are giving DIY.

I'm sorry, I could see how timid you were with ranking these, but truly I want THIS type of recap of the met every year. THIS is how I look at things and it was fun as a viewer to rank things before you did and see if we agreed (I do sew lol, I am not a professional by no means but I know my way around). This was a really cool and satisfying way to make a tier list for the gala :) I liked seeing the focus being on the garment, rather than the celebrity or the taste level of the designer. Maybe this is up to my own research, but I think it would be interesting to hear some comments on the theme, what you expected to see, and who interpreted the theme faithfully or in an original way. We saw so much B&W, tweed, tulle, pearls, florals, it was up to the silhouette to make it interesting to me... Also interesting that two of the fellas in the top tier were wearing the same silhouette... who did it better! Thanks for this cool video! You pointed out many elements that gave me appreciation for outfits I wasn't really feeling.

A fursuit of the quality of Jared Letos, with the personalized touches of matching a real cat's markings could EASILY be tens of thousands of dollars. Those things are EXPENSIVE, and done wrong, they can really look bad. His looked amazing. The only thing that could have elevated it more would have been animatronics to make it talk when he did.

I only watched this video for the cat. 😻😹 True. Realistic fursuits are extremely difficult to make. I hv seen videos of them being made and they required amazing sense of details and observation. If slightly done wrong the whole look will come off. I am glad whoever made the suit was totally dedicated to capture the cutness of the cat.

The Karlie Kloss look (20:48) is actually a reference to Karl’s first show at Chanel in 1983. The dress being referenced was famous for Karl trying to embody Coco Chanel’s personal style. Miss Coco loved decking herself out in costume jewelry so Karl originally embroidered some onto the dress. Anna Wintour owns the original 1983 dress and it’s one of her favorites. Loewe (JW Anderson) used the technique of Tromp L’oeil to have that printed costume jewelry on it and then decked out Karlie in real gold. It was a great reference once you know the history behind it.

I was totally immersed in your very astute and technical opinions. You brought my appreciation of couture to a whole different level. However, now I will never be able to unsee these minute facets of flaw that you’ve so expertly pointed out, in any garment I see, be it RTW or haute couture. Sometimes I feel like the wearer’s posture can be the culprit, as in the case of Stephanie Hsu’s shoulders in Valentino. But, ultimately, kudos and Brava to you for this thoroughly enjoyed analysis! 👏🏽

I love your version of rating the garments! I also loved how you mentioned the technical difficulty of the garment and then let us know if you throught the technique paud off or not. Personally, I can appreciate the difficulty of Alexa Chung's dress, but I just think it didn't pay off - it came off too busy. Sometimes a simpler design can make these technical features really shine rather than getting hidden amonst everything else. Whereas, simpler techniques often need a big visual impact for me to appreciate (but not always).
