This was exactly the information I was looking for. I just bought a Sigma MC-11 that I sent back because it doesn't seem to work with non Sigma lenses. At least not the ones I have. I was very close to buying the Metabones instead of the MC-11, but I talked myself into the idea that the camera store rep I talked to knew what they were talking about. OK that didn't work out, but now I have become aware of much cheaper adapters. Why should I pay $400 for this when there are some much cheaper adapters with seemingly good reviews. On the other hand, normal skepticism made me think something that costs $400 is probably better than something that costs $40. And then I happened on this video and there was light. Thank you.

There was a firmware update for Metabones late in 2015 that corrects problems shown here. It is cool that you can plug the adapter into a PC for updates. It's a significant improvement in autofocus, keeping in mind Canon autofocus does draw plenty of energy from the lesser Sony battery.

This ended up being ideal for me. I have disposed of all but one of my EF lenses but I still have a 300mm f/2.8 non-IS lens which has an intermittent fault and so nobody would buy it. All my manual focus lenses are OM Zuikos but the 300mm Zuiko, while it was fantastic on film, really doesn't perform very well on digital. When I bought my Sony A7R, there was a redeemable voucher for a Metabones adapter in whatever brand you want. I have been able to use this adapter very successfully with my old Canon EF 300mm. I don't get auto focus with it. I can only use manual focus but I'm not concerned because I have no plans to use the A7R for sport or anything like that. The biggest problem with this old EF lens is that it is focus-by-wire and it requires power to the focus motor, even in manual mode. The Metabones adapter does work in this role and also gives me iris control so it's a win/win for me. Metabones have a list of supported EF lenses on their website and I don't recall this lens being listed. However, I can vouch for the fact that is does work in manual mode and the iris can be set. I agree with all your comments Ted and although mine was part of a package deal, I'm extremely glad to have it in my kit.

Hi Ted, great review. I bought a Metabones adapter for using my Nikkor A1s lenses on my Fuji X-E2. It was substantially less expensive than your model, costing me €155 (about $160) but has less facilities (thus the cheaper price). It has no electronic connection between camera and lenses, which doesn't matter as the A1s lenses are all manual focus anyway and there is no metadata or aperture communication from camera to lens. The adapter has an aperture connector which can be used to control the lens when it is mounted with the aperture already stopped down on the lens. The big advantage is that I can now use my wonderful 50mm f1.2 lens on the Fuji for great portrait results with practically no depth of field. I'm so sorry now that I sold my 85mm f1.4 lens a couple of years ago, it would have been a beauty on this camera.

AF problem expected on your A7S camera. A7S, A7R doesn't have phase AF at all, the Metabones & Canon AF does not work with these camera. It may work slightly better on A7, A7 II, but not much. However Adorama & others say it works VERY well with A7R II. Looking forward to more information as A7R II become available to independent testers.

Whole heartedly agree (great video) I have the Sony a6500 with metabones adapter version 5 and not only is CONTINUOUS auto focus SLOW, the “cranking” noise it makes while hunting is a deal breaker in videos. A bit of a bummer as I have a nice collection of canon glass.
@Heins00009 жыл бұрын
If you look at this adaptor as an photographer it might seem like it's not ideal in the case of AF. BUT: If you are a videographer or filmmaker you'll love this thing because in film you don't need auto-anything and espescially not autofocus. The problem with the Sony lenses is that they are AF lenses. If you turn the focus dial at them you will give them an order which they send to a AF motor. Even if you use manual focus. But if you have Canon lenses (or lenses from any other brand with normal MF) you'll get really nice results out of this.

You've mentioned having some old Russian lenses, and this got me very interested. Some time ago I bought an old Helios 44M, mainly for its particular bokeh and aesthetic quality. Since it is a copy from a Zeiss optic, I wonder if this type of lenses (like the Jupiter-9, Zenitar M, and Takumar) can actually compete with some newer optics. Besides all of above, I really want to say that you are truly amazing man, and I appreciate so much all the effort you put on the show, keep on it. Cheers from Mexico!
@liliansirbu8407 жыл бұрын
takumar seems has like nikkor or leica same amount of lines pairs per millimeter, around 80, which may be equivalent with 22MPix spatial resolution, enough good for cameras with sensor till 24MPix full frame. As for most of soviet, and post soviet lens, the spatial resolution is 8MPix (50lp/mm) in center, and 3 MPix (30lp/mm) in edge of lens. In order to have a good fitting lens with CCD/CMOS sensor, it request to have same amount of spatial resolution of lens with sensor resolution. Zeiss Otus can cover spatial resolution close to 50MPix (46-48), Planar 50mm E-mount around 40, Distagon E-mount 35mm around 36-37, or try to look for Leica APO between 200 and 400mm.

These are AMAZING! Using canon glass like they were on canon body, but with cheaper/better performance sony body! The best thing is that I can use all the cheaper lens from Canon, which cost a fraction of what sony offers(mostly because of the quality...but the price/value isn't good enough for the cost), it is great!

Hey Ted, Your comment on attaching the lens to the adapter feel a bit rough, you may be right. I have a Metabones adapter for a Fuji XT1 to Leica M, and noticed the after a couple of months that the chrome on the back of both my Voighlander lenses was worn down to the brass. I modified the spring clips to create less pressure when rotating the lens engagement to prevent further wear. Cheers Daniel

Timely. I just pre ordered the new Sony AR7ii and the big reason for me doing that was the ability to use all the Canon lenses I currently use. So, just placed an order for this Metabones as well....... I saw that there were cheaper alternatives, but sometimes you get what you pay for and the extra is worth it in the long run, felt the Metabones looked a bit more well made, and since its going on expensive glass Its probably worth it. Will be interesting to see if the AF is better-as apparently Sony have 'fixed' this

** METABONES PROBLEM IN GERMANY ** Hi there, just here to report a problem I currently have with the Metabones Adapter Mark V from Canon to Sony. It looses "hair", the inside black lining is very poorly made and it loses a LOT of small "hair" on the sensor. I bought already 3 copies (1 from Amazon, 2 from the local store) and they all have the same problem. (The Store started to report the probelm too, btw) The most annoying thing is the support from Metabones, wich I contacted immediately: NULL. NADA. ZERO. NIENTE. So be CAREFUL! Check your adapters, you just need to bang it (no need to use force) on a surface and/or rub with your finger inside the adapter. You will see immediately if your copy is ok, or.. NOT...

The Art of Photography I've found a way around the problem of shooting wide open with a non electronic extension tube. I have a canon T3 and I go to live view to set the ISO to 100 and the aperture to the max. Then I play around with the shutter speed because for some reason, as I increase the shutter speed the camera will automatically decrease the iris. Once the iris has stopped down to where I like, I detach the lens while the camera still on.. And then I put the lens on the extension tube, and then onto the camera, and then I have fun hope this helps
