Hey so we're testing you guys with backstreet boys, see how you'll like em. i decided it'd be best to do a couple live versions, don't know why just felt right. anyway you've already seen brian performing but now the whole group's here, they've matured a bit but still sound very good. one thing you might notice is that brian's voice is a bit shaky unless he's belting high notes, that's because he's got vocal dystonia & dysphonia which make's it hard for him to breathe and speak even. this i think makes it more impressive when we hear him hit some sick high notes. you can google if you want to know more about his condition. anyway just wanted to clear that out, hope you enjoy, sorry for long message :)

Brian is the lead vocalist but he's really struggled with health issues affecting his voice. However, BSB is and has always been a vocal harmony group first and foremost so they are very good at supporting each other as well as making sure everyone gets their time to shine.

The leader (in singing) used to be Brian because he used to have a wider range of vocal. Now he sings better only in the higher register. Since he had the problem with his vocal cord, everybody else took part in every song. Even the harmony has changed since then. But eventually it sounds even better when everyone sings. They employ what is called polyphonic harmony where everyone standout with their own melody. It is not like usual barbershop harmony. If you listen to their new acapella song "Breathe" you can tell the uniqueness of their harmony. Even the old song (also titled) "Breathe" also has an interesting harmony. The leader in the group is still Kevin (the oldest one). Kevin is the one who keeps the group intact and the chemistry going.

Originally Howie was the lead singer. You can find a pre-debut performance from 1993. When they got a record deal the producers put Brian as the lead singer, Nick and AJ second lead and Howie with Kevin additional lead. When they started to have control it became more balanced.

There's no leader. They're a unit. Nick and Brian have tended to be, but it's not that way anymore.

Great video! You two are fun to watch 💙 Brian and Nick were pushed to the front as leads because of their "look". Over time and as Brian's voice was having difficulty, Nick picked up the slack so to speak. And then as they started to have more creative decision making abilities, they started incorporating them all to have leads in many songs. Now in 2022, there is no lead, I would say. They're so fricking talented. Been nice to watch their journey from the beginning.

The formula at one time was Brian,Nick and AJ would sing mostly the lead vocals with mostly Brian starting the songs off. Kevin and Howie would sing here and there but mostly background. But when Kevin left Howie finally got his chance to shine when they became a quartet and song on just about every song now. When Kevin came back into the fold now everyone sings on just about every song. If anyone was a leader I would say Kev.

Have been a BSB fan since 1996, and technically there was never a lead, although Brian, AJ and Nick were given most of the leads...but now Kevin and Howie get their fair share of solo time.

You have to watch the documentary, "Show 'Em What You're Made Of". In it they do talk about lead vocals. Or at least KZbin the fight scene between Nick and Brian, it's crazy!

Maybe you should check out live performances from like 1997-2001 that's like when they were at their peak vocally especially Brian blows me away. Brian was the original lead.

@@secrets.295 AJ has good riffs and runs that gives color to the group harmony. BUT the best vocalist will always be Brian. No doubt.

Brian and Nick usually had the lead in the beginning. AJ somewhat too, and Howie mostly the falsetto bits. In recent years it has become more equal and I think their sound is much better for it. I just wish we could hear Kevin a lot more. He has a gorgeous rich voice that is hidden too much, IMO.

Yes! Kevin is AWESOME. He sings in many BSB songs, and he even has solo songs. He has a very sweet and sexy voice.

Not long started watching reaction video's and i really enjoy your channel as you are reacting to a very different genre of music. Great effort. Especially the Elvis stuff btw!!! Being from the UK we have loads of groups that are big but not known in America. Give Take That a shot - they have many songs but one i really enjoy is called The Garden - the live version (Take That Present: The Circus Live - The Garden)

To me, there is no "lead singer". It has been said, by them, that they determine who sings what by the song and what sounds best to them when in the studio, recording. I think AJ, Brian, Nick do a lot of the main vocals. Kevin does a lot of the bass and Howie is the falsetto guy. They all just blend together so damn perfectly!!

As a leader of the formation, there's none. Like they 5 together are face of the group, and each on has spotlight for themselves. Voice wise, it'd be AJ and Brian with Nick being a second lead and melody, while Howie handles most of high notes and Kevin mid-low notes. Back in their early starts Howie was the lead singer, but once they got record deal it was Brian who got more presence together with AJ. There are many songs where you can hear all of them lead singing a verse or a little part as it can be All I have to give, Lose it all, In a world like this, show me the meaning of being lonely, I want it that way which all of them are pretty good if you ever give them a chance to listen.

Brian - technically the leader, also was a legal guardian of Nick's back in the day, swine flu got his pipes f-d up Kevin - eldest one, at one point left the group for Broadway (some say it's because he was annoyed with singing back vocals most of the time), but probably the person with both feet firmly on the ground AJ - so called "trouble child", but still my favourite one Nick - the most popular one, so probably the leader in that aspect Howie - even though i am a fan of theirs since 1995, i still sometimes have to google for Howie, cause he is the "silent one", family guy, not a single bad mark on his resume

No there is no LEAD singer. They all takes turns singing a solo bit in almost all songs. Brian, NIck or AJ tend to be the "lead in vocal"-ie they might start the song. Howie and or Kevin sing the bridge. But both have distinctive voices--Howie's is light, ethereal and angelic. Kevin has a deep soft vocal with a country vibe. Nick has the most "versatile voice at present", he can sing light R&B, he can sing raspy gritty deep rocker. AJ has a deep souful voice. Brian USE to have the typical "choirboy" voice, but he struggles beyond belief with vocal dystonia--mostly because he refuses to do what every other singer with the problem does...ie STOP SINGING. Shania Twain, Art Garfunkel, so many. Their vocal polyphony is their hallmark-very very complex harmonies. I Want It That Way--the Pachelbel's Canon in D of pop music.
