The magic number seemed to be $20, no one wanted to go over that unless it was a festival type show with multiple potential headliners. I think I paid around $25 for Monsters of Rock in '87. Around the late 90's/2000 a few really big names (Boomer era stars) realized they could ask for $100 or more and actually get it. This is why I usually only attend festivals, in my experience they tend to have fixed prices because they're kinda their own brand. Tons Of Rock in Norway always have the same prices, and the best part is that the prices add up (let me explain) You can buy day passes until they're sold out, they cost 1100kr (about 110 dollars) and the festival lasts 4 days. You can also buy a "festival pass" which gives you access to all 4 days, they never get sold out, and they cost 4400kr (440 dollars) I love the fact that it all adds up 110 dollars per day, 4 days, all 4 days cost 440 dollars. IT MAKES SENSE! I'm ignoring the VIP passes and VIP festival passes, I believe they do sell out, but even then they only cost about 150-200 dollars more and gives you access to some really convenient stuff (reserved bathrooms, VIP bar and pub, personal tables to eat and drink at) But then I check out Slaughter to Prevail doing a 2 hour concert in Oslo, and it's like 150 dollars or something, for one band... But in the end, human suffering is profitable, so price gouging will always be a thing.

Been to see them 16 times, the last of which was 11/13/24 where I dropped 200 bones for a seat at the back of the arena. Never have I paid that before, even when I was at the front of the stage. Good on them if people are willing to pay it but I’m not one of them. I love both bands (along with many others) and they put on great shows but the total cost for two people in my area to see a show is approaching $1000 if a hotel room is involved. Other things to consider: 1) In the past, bands used to do 100+ shows per year, reaching more people with lower prices. Now they favor less shows in bigger venues just fishing in the smaller pond of people that can afford those prices or just pick that 1 favorite show per year. Less work, same (or more) money. 2) most of the touring bands have still their main fan base in the millennial / gen x pot! Most of them can afford these prices now, definitely could not in their 20s....

Even if I'm in the back of a stadium to see Metallica (real) this is preferable because that money could go to merch (venue cuts for merch are robbery) or it could go to making other parts of the trip better. Honestly, think it'd be easier to just go to a festival at this point if theres a good one near you or one that has a lot of bands that you like. It's a major crock, and it hurts the industry. Just as with music, people consume it for free now, and when they DO spend money, it's on physical albums from the biggest band in the world. With gigs, I have friends who tell me "oh, I can't go to any other shows this month, I just got Slipknot tickets, so I'm broke"... so guess what? yep... more disposable income eaten up that doesn't get spent on unsigned acts. I would say that only we the consumer can stop this. But when someone is willing to spend £200 to see Slipknot it's clear that self control isn't possible for these people.

They all closed because of the global health event, and now the big venues can charge anything they want because there’s nowhere else to see live music. People who pay that much for a concert are fools. I don't care who the band is. If I'm going to be paying almost $100 just to sit all the way up in the nosebleeds, then fuck that. I'll just stay home. People love being taken advantage of these days and will willingly fork over their money for anything without a second thought, regardless of the price. Unfortunately, those people are ruining gaming (as you mentioned), live music, etc. for the rest of us, cause the jackasses setting the prices are seeing the tickets still sell.

@daevyl Not sure how you came to that conclusion. Don't pretend I don't think artists should be able to make money. I am one of said artists. The issue of ticket prices goes beyond "artists should be paid". I got two tickets for Maiden in London, and it only cost £88 each. Let me reword that. The bastards charged me £88 each, that's still a lot of money. But its not as bad as the £150+ you were talking about. And this is the problem with checking prices later on. On day 1, there are plenty of affordable tickets. When they are gone, you are left with the ones which are going to cost you over the odds. The supposedly better seats, the private boxes, all that bollocks. I often hear about these £150, £200, £300 tickets and the truth is, yes they are out there, but they are not standard tickets. Next year, I'm also seeing 3 other stadium/ arena shows and all of them were more reasonably priced too (Sabaton £71, Trivium/BFMV £60, Pantera £88.) Also because I happen to have the figure here, earlier this year I saw Scorpions at Wembley for £81. My point is that if you get in early, the prices are not extortionate. It's only when you are left with the last few tickets that they only have the VIP tickets and other bullshit like that left

Brokest people there (myself included, I was unemployed and spent almost everything to make that happen). Turns out the most dedicated fans that are willing to pay for VIP are often the brokest mfs around. Everyone I talked to in line were like "yeah bro I gotta wait for my next paycheck to buy food cause of this show." Let alone regular tickets to a smaller show. Sabaton have charged £76ish for "prime" seating, and £73ish for standing and "lesser" seating and that includes fees. They're bringing an orchestra with them and it's an arena show. And honestly, I think that's good value. Might be slightly biased because they're one of my favourite bands, but I still think for a full arena show like that, it's a reasonable price these days. What I'm starting to see is quite small bands charging quite ridiculous prices for "VIP" tickets. There is a small show in my city (around 200-250 cap) where standard tickets are just over £10, which is fine. You could then on top of that buy a VIP ticket for about £70 😮 Then you have something like Power Metal Quest Fest who charge about £40-£50 for a full day of bands, which is such good value for money! There are other "specialised" festivals out there who are charging nearly £200 for festival tickets which does not include any form of accommodation at all, for a reasonably small capacity festival compared to some of the bigger ones such as Bloodstock. In fact I think one of these festivals is charging more than a full weekend ticket for Bloodstock. I try and go for the smaller and more independent shows now because I just can't afford all these ticket prices, and I wouldn't be considered "poor".

It's also due to the monopoly that is held on the venues, where ticket master and venue sites such as live nation are artificially boosting prices up. It doesn't help that bands are also happy to increase that fee for the consumer. I will always see bands live if I get the chance, but at the rate ticket prices are going I doubt I will be able to see a lot of the now Mainstream metal and rock bands. Add on top of all of this, ticket master own their own 3rd party re-sales, which means people who get the ticket at the standard entry fee then charge more for the re-sale (Which is against the TOS but still happens) It's also reflective in big festival putting the prices up more and more each year, which makes more sense as running a festival clearly costs more for a company. I mean we have seen it with download which is now £300 for general camping for 5 nights, again still in my opinion a more fair price because of the actual experience of festivals. There is also an amazing video that goes over a lot of the monopoly stuff that ticket master and live nation are doing by more perfect union. Bands and artists need to start standing up against the strangle hold that these companies hold the majority of bigger venues.

This is par for the course in the NY/NJ area. Where I really got killed was at the concessions - $17 for chicken tenders & fries, and another $10 for a large soda! And Tshirts were going for $50, that's ridiculous! I have enough Maiden shirts anyways so I passed, I've never spent more than $25-$30 for a shirt at a concert before. The other was Soul Coughing, loved these guys back in the 90s and was so glad they finally reunited after 25 years. Saw them in Brooklyn at a smaller concert venue that holds around 1,800 people. GA tickets were around $45 face value I think, but I grabbed one on the secondary market a few days before the show for just $25. What a world of a difference, obviously was standing only but I was about 20 feet or so from the stage, and drinks there weren't terribly priced either. I do miss going to see my fav bands at smaller venues, but I'm at the point where I'd rather get an actual seat to relax in until the show starts, I can't stand being on my feet for 3+ hours anymore.

I got 3rd row tickets to see Dream Theater at the Tower Theater in Philly for $80 in 2014. The same seats are $300-400 or more on Ticketmaster right now.

Yeah, I remember seeing them at Rams Head in Baltimore during the Six Degrees Tour and I feel like I paid something like $60 or something like that.. all I know is I was working at Advance Auto at the time and even I could afford that, PLUS the drive to Baltimore and back, about an hour and a half away from my house. Sad what Ticketmaster is doing here.

Don’t go then. They can charge what they want. Go see a less known act.

It might be important to include the factor that nobody really buys CD’s or vinyl. All that money that used to be made has to be made somewhere else.

Two years ago I was at Iron Maiden in Warsaw for 320 polish Złoty. It's around 75 euro. Fair price to me, even that most Poles earn around 1200 euro +/- per month. Cheapest ticket for Behemoth + Satyricon + Rotting Christ on 2025 in Wrocław, Poland will be for 214 PLN, which is around 50 euro. Damn good price I'd say. Well maybe tickets in Poland are just cheaper, I don't know 🤷 PS: There's also Poland Rock festival for free, where I've seen: Arch Enemy, Hardcore Superstar, Airbourne, Sabaton, Prodigy, Floggin Molly, Vader, Decapitated, Tarja Turunen, Judas Priest. FOR FKN FREE. Seriously, each year there's such festival in Poland, it's huge, and basicly there are no tickets, everyone can enter it. It's made by WOŚP, which is one of the biggest charities in Poland and their initiative was also to make such big event and simply collect money on it for charity actions. As I know most bands play there for free, especially that the biggest crowd there was 700.000 people, so even that they do it only for "the bigger purpouse", bands can also play their biggest concerts in their lives. Nice place also to make a concert video like Arch Enemy did (it's on YT, just check it). So if you're from Europe, come to Poland, flights are cheap nowadays :P

Great vid. With that said pricing is why I say it's important to SUPPORT YOUR SMALLER VENUES. I have been able to see great shows for under 40$ including bands like Currents, bleed from within, boundaries, and great American ghost. Please seek out smaller venues especially if they use a ticketing service not run by ticket master or live Nation.

paid 40euro for megadeth in budapest this year. dont know whats up with all these high prices people are mentioning? Megadeth shows weren't that expensive in europe

I live in the US and most concert ticket prices I’ve seen for the past 8 years or so have averaged about 200 to 400 US dollars. The only way I ever get to attend a live performance now is if a band gives a free concert, since ticket prices are completely unacceptable.

I paid something like € 85,- for a ticket to the Vienna Metal Meeting and got to see Cannibal Corpse, Immolation, Municipal Waste, Darkspace, Kampfar, 1349 and handful of others. So I'm not really noticing any price hike in my area. Last year they had Paradise Lost as the headliner and the price was still the same-ish. Cheapest show of 2024 for me was Sodom for € 15,-. It was a tattoo convention and only a few dedicated people were there for the band. So it was a more chill and laid-back show where they even handed out beverages. Last year I saw Destruction at this tattoo convention, for the same price. In February 2020 I saw Slipknot w/ Behemoth (my last show before the lockdown) for about € 110,- for a seating ticket. Their tour shirts were € 40,- each which I found a bit steep. Most bands would charge € 25,- for a shirt and most of the shows I go to (mostly BM and DM) cost between € 35 and € 40 per ticket. I guess some bands are just full of themselves.

I feel old. I remember 2 day jam band shows being like $75 including camping, 1 day festivals with 10 bands would let you in for $10 and make up the difference on beer sales, and big name rock/metal shows in sports arenas would be $40--50.

i live in southern california and have gone to punk/metal/hardcore shows for years... idk why they think i wanna spend 50+ dollars and ive just stopped going. Its a bummer that what i used to pay for a ticket and merch is now the entry cost and its keeping the kids from being able to participate and grow the scene

Great video. I generally don’t bother with gigs over 500 cap. Much rather see Raging Speedhorn in the Underworld for under £30.

It’s genuinely insane. Ticket prices are like 300% more than in the 70s 80s 90s… Merch now is also bare minimum 35 dollars or pounds for a shirt. And more for hoodies, long sleeves etc x It’s cheaper to buy a

$50 is my cutoff. 90% of the time there is only one or two bands I actually want to see out of the lineup.
