I'm a huge Civil War buff. My wife and I stumbled upon the Perryville battlefield while driving through Kentucky. A very sharp battle, as one soldier quaintly put it. ;)

I had two great-great-granduncles killed in the Battle of Perryville who fought in GA Infantry 41st Regiment Company F. One is buried in the hill of dead in the park while the other was badly wounded later to die in a prison camp. When I visited the park's visitor center the folks were very helpful in printing out military info of my kin I had never seen in my research. I discovered one of the uncles had a wife and two children who relocated to Texas after his death. I found a branch of my family tree I had never known before. Highly recommend visiting the park and talking to the folks at the visitor center.

How does one get started in the sport of metal detecting? How do you know your target sights? How do you get permission to look and dig? I know you can't just dig up park land.
@TarheelDiggin6 жыл бұрын
I started by purchasing a decent, entry-level metal detector and hunted mostly parks and public ground where detecting is allowed. It's a great way to learn your equipment and how to dig and recover targets, then repair the ground like new. There's a lot of research that goes into finding the right places to detect. I prefer to hunt old home sites that no longer exist. On private land, always obtain permission from the land owner. It helps to start with family and friends, then branch out to other properties. HH!
