This site looks so similar to my great-grandparents' house in southern Union County. They're some of my fondest memories of early childhood. The spring in back, the hill where ginseng grew, even the chestnut trees. I can imagine the chestnuts would've provided a nice supplementary crop to these remote houses. I just wish I could better identify the species. I doubt they're American Chestnuts after the blight nearly made them extinct, but it begs the question of when they would've gotten their hands on a resistant species. Maybe they're somehow stunted varieties of the old giants I've heard stories of? I'm afraid I'm rambling now, but this was a nostalgia trip. I'm definitely subscribing.
@HistoryHoundDetecting4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for subbing. I wondered about that chestnut tree as well. It’s not terribly old. I’m thinking a hunt may have set it out knowing that the nuts would draw the animals to the area.

SHAWNBOY 4x4 Thats a tough area man. No detecting on tribal lands, and the reservation is surrounded by National Forest and National Park...both off limits. You pretty much need private permissions. There is a park in Bryson City that might allow it.

Ben, this is really a true picture of what the oldest home sites in the mtns. over here produce, the reason you don't find much money around these are just what you said, they honestly didn't have it to loose. They ate a lot of possums and sweet potatoes, traded eggs, chickens, and fatback. Sorry I haven't been in touch much lately, but after the storm arrived really can't put as much time into relative things that I know you know I'm interested in. If you will, email me your address so I can send you something I put together for you from the 'hoard'. Nothing grand, great or big, but something I think you can relate to positively when you get it. The storm will get over before the end of the year and normalcy as we used to know will come back a little at a time after that.
@HistoryHoundDetecting4 жыл бұрын
Charles Spiva Good to hear from you Charles! Things will hopefully be returning to normal sooner rather than later. I will email you my address. After all this time, I am very curious as to what you’ve discovered. Looking forward to talking to you about it.

Have you heard of Christopher Bechtler a jeweler in Rutherfordton NC .minted first gold $1.00 coin for NC. If not read up on it .he minted two hundred and 50 thousand dollars for the miners and$ 5.00 gold coins also if I lived in NC I'd be checking into it .🤔
