In this video, I show you one website that I use to do research to find old properties to metal detect. I will walk you through the website, show you what I look for and cross reference it to a modern aerial to see what is on that property right now.

I live in a small town in Maine founded in the 18th century. I was able to go to the historical society online for my town and actually was amazed at the pics, maps of the streets and what was there. My own home is a victorian age home but i never knew alot of the buildings and areas until i did. Great advice!

You don't need Google or the Computer at all. Just go to your local library and find an old history book for the county you want to search. Study, then outline the leads you find in the early history of the whole county. Then let's get into the township histories at the last part of the book. This is where the best leads come from, Taverns, ghost towns, camp meetings, political meetings and picnics! I get atlas maps of all the counties I search on eBay.

Nice information. Thank you. It's amazing how few historic maps of our state of Colorado there are online. Search "Adams County" where I live and there's pretty much nothing. So weird. Yeah, I've been using Historic Aerials, but of course their timelines are limited. That said I've learned a lot of history about my neighborhood while researching for places to hunt. Another reason to love detecting! Keep up the good work. Best, Steve

@5280Adventures
@5280Adventures 3 жыл бұрын
It is hit or miss on some older areas. Those areas may not have been mapped very consistently which is the case that I have found. Sometimes research takes you to the library, county GIS websites, or scouring old books of the area. Sometimes that will help find a map that not many people know it exists.

Can you give any tips. On how to approach the current owner, to ask permission to hunt their property. I used to hunt with a Bounty Hunter RB5 in the 80's. Then it was customary to offer 15'/, of the value found.
@5280Adventures

When I approach land owners, I let them know that I will be taking all trash with me and am willing to show them all of my finds. I dont bring up giving them any finds that I uncover. If they discuss it, I usually tell them that they are entitled to the finds as it was found on their property. I rarely come across owners that want to keep anything that is found. I have though made some memory boxes of items that the owners really liked. That usually helps me get to come back and hunt more!

I know when I tried to find these like 15 years ago the old Sanborn Maps were still a few item. I’m hoping you have a video or blog on how you approach the land owners. Do you have to offer to split any finds with them. Luckily I can start on the property I live on now. It’s been here since the 1890’s is a large corner lot and was once the village grocery store, ice cream parlor & post office. Thanks again. Dave in Wyomissing PA.

looks like the site has really gone down hill since this video, or maybe it's just useful in some areas. I live in one of the most historically relevant towns in the US and there's only 1 map.. but there is a town of the same name in Iowa and Ohio that have over 10 maps each. You also have to search, because the state links are broken (as least for the two states I plan to metal detect in the most)
