The native American knowledge is great. When hunting history its always important to consider the landscape and how people who have gone before us used it. Like the rock shelters you have found and why you hunt for long forgotten fords or river crossings. Its all part and parcel of respecting the stories of artefacts.

This is exactly why I dig every single pull tab. The Spanish came through Northwest Arkansas and I'm hoping that I find a 500 year old Spanish coin. I would lose my damn mind. ...and I've dug hundreds of pull tabs... haha

The tannins from the acorns were also used for tanninig hides hence the term tanning from the word tannin.

Came down here to say that. In England they are also used to boil fishing nets. It helped stop them rotting. To make native flour, the outer skin had to be removed.

Chigg, Congrats on that little Spanish Silver! It looks like the ridge of a turtle shell at 0:35 into vid, in lower left of screen. Nice story about the acorn nuts. You are right, the bitterness can be leached out by digging a hole and covering the acorns with wood ash and about five inches of earth, before the rains and leave them there for a (three weeks?) and check them. They should then be ready to roast, eat and grind for flour. : )

I was taught the White Oak acorn is the edible one. The Red Oak is a two year acorn with too many tannins to be edible. You still have to soak the White Oak acorn, but the tannins mostly leave after enough water changes.

Deer prefer acorns from trees in the white oak family of trees because they have less tannins. Hard to believe 1/3 of the eastern forest was chestnut at one time.

The region you're in had about 20% chestnut tree cover in forests when Europeans arrived. Chestnuts require less processing for food, so developing Oaks for food would be less important. It's likely the indigenous people were spreading chestnuts, and remembering where the edible oaks are. We forget about how common chestnuts were before the 20th century.

Little trick for when you're filming really close to the object to try and show it off--pinch and zoom from just a tad bit away, instead of bringing the phone right up to the object. It'll show much clearer, and should be no sweat for you to do since you never wear gloves :)

.22-250 is still quite fast, but the "new hotness" is the .338 Lapua, which has ballistics halfway between a deer cartridge and the .50 caliber sniper rifles that weigh so much they should come with wheels. It's not a varmint cartridge, it's a sniper rifle cartridge, but it has over 3x the muzzle energy of the .22-250, and it's used for long range shooting at people.

2:50 I think it has more to do with the reliability of the crop than the time it takes to grow an oak. White oaks produce the acorns that are easiest to make edible and the native americans knew this. However, white oaks are not only cyclical in acorn production, but very susceptible to frost. You can easily have years where a stand of white oaks has almost no acorns. Planting oaks is just not a dependable source of food the way planting a field of corn is. It's great if when they are available, but it's probably a better use of time and energy to find the trees that are producing in a given year and farm something else.
