Metal Detecting - The Minelab GPZ 7000 and GPX 5000 - A Target Test Comparison

Since the introduction of the GPZ 7000 there has been a lot of conjecture about it's ability compared to the GPX 5000, especially when the 5000 is coupled with some of the latest Coils to hit the market.
This Test Comparison has not been made to determine which machine is better than the other, but rather to present an objective appraisal on how each machine performs on different sized targets at different depths. IMPORTANTLY, the targets have been left UNDISTURBED and in their natural state, thus allowing a TRUE response from each machine.
It is IMPORTANT to remember that all results on the GPX 5000 mentioned here are SPECIFIC TO THE NUGGET FINDER 17 x 13 EVOLUTION Coil.
The CONCLUSIONS based on the SCORING are just that... purely analytical, based on the test scores.
The SCORING comprises of 2 main areas: LOUDNESS or VOLUME and EASE OF TARGET DETERMINATION. LOUDNESS or VOLUME pertains to how loud the initial volume of the Target is ( thus making it easy to hear ). EASE OF TARGET DETERMINATION is determined by how REPETITIOUS, CONSISTENT and WELL DEFINED the Target Signal is; ( thus making it easier to assess the absolute presence of a TRUE TARGET as apposed to GROUND NOISE ).
The GENERAL OBSERVATIONS are my observations and are not hard and fast rules.
At the end of the day, I have presented you with TEST SCORES, CONCLUSIONS and OBSERVATIONS in the hope that they assist you to DRAW YOUR OWN CONCLUSIONS.
For the record, I love both my 5000 and my GPZ, and would not trade one for the other, because each machine has strengths that the other doesn't. Together they form an awesome entourage that increase my ability to find gold.
The real test is whether either machine can detect Gold in a HEAVILY worked area, and as this video shows, both pass with flying colours.
Of course it should be said that each Detector's performance will always be determined by the SETTINGS being used, and of course these vary from operator to operator. I'm a firm believer in "IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT", so if your settings work for you, then stick to them. Very good comparison vid there John. I've had very similar results and found that running a smaller12" EVO the smaller gold showed up on the 5000 pretty well equal to the "Z". I agree with your conclusion that in the right hands, with the right settings and experience, both machines are at the pinnacle of detector capabilities. Good luck on your next trip mate.

Witch one would I be better off investing in, the 5000 or the 7000??? One more question... I've heard that the smaller the coil the deeper it will penetrate into the ground. It still amazes me how much difference even a couple of inches can make on certain targets. A bit of an eye opener when demonstrating it to new users. They quickly learn to keep the coil on the ground as much as possible. Just curious did you have a booster on the 5000? Signal seems to be distorting a little whereas the 7000 sounded quieter but cleaner

Thank you for sharing your results! Video well done! You concluded the 5000 equipped with the Nugget Finder Evolution 17X13 coil outperformed the 7000 on the deepest and largest target. The 7000 has 3 settings; 1) shallow fine nuggets, 2) intermediate depth medium nuggets, and 3) deep large nuggets. Which setting did you use on the 7000 for the deep and other targets? Apology if this question was already asked. Thanks!

The result was based on the scoring system I used. Specifically to be objective. Remember, I originally found all targets with the 7000 and to be fair, had I not scraped off an inch or so before confirming the largest and deepest target was in fact a "target", I actually have my doubts that the 5000 would have picked it up. I'm in British Columbia and have been researching and studying gold deposits in WA during my spare time for 3 years with hopes of visiting the State in a year or so. Was going to buy the GPZ 7000, but decided to purchase the CTX 3030 in 2016 as my first detector for learning and relic hunting. Will probably choose the 7000 to bring along to my WA visit. Will bring the 3030 also for trashy areas, but the wideband frequency range isn't suitable for gold smaller than 2 grams at intermediate depths. I'm involved with wet wash placer gold mining and it's unfortunate my mining season coincides with the best time to prospect WA. My time off here is November to March, so I have to pick the best time, if any lol, from that period. Cheers!

Interesting testing, but hardly comparable. It would have been far more interesting if you had used the N/F on both machines. Would have made it a little easier for me to choose between the two machines. I have chosen the GPX 5000 as it is a little lighter than the GPZ 7000, (means a lot when you're swinging it all day) and hopefully a bit easier to learn to use. From some of the lads out WA, the GPZ thrashes the 5000 most days but there are those that swear by their 5000's. Also it's probably a better bet price wise for a beginner. Anyway, it's already started paying itself back, found a tent peg, a dinner knife, half a dozen bottle tops and $1.20. I'll get there, just $4998.80 to go, or thereabouts. Cheers for the vid, it told me I now need a N/F 17" x 13" coil..........damn :)

@@ClearAdventure Hi there. I found a few hundred bucks, rings, ear rings, other bits of jewelry, nothing great so far. Haven't been out for gold but should be able to in a couple of weeks. I was wrong, should have bought straight into the GPZ 7000. It would have been just as easy to learn as I knew nothing anyway and it has way way better technology. Always buy the tech!!!!! It'll be my next detector (Always buy new!) unless something better comes out, which MineLab will ultimately produce. Cheers CA :)

On that score I'll go with my $1300 2nd hand Whites TDI pro oz and even pick up some mid sized nuggets the others can miss. That's the sort of size I really go for not that chicken shit and the elusive big ones. I've found two 19 ouncers on a Whites goldmaster two that I unwrapped from around a tree somewhere.

Hi there, Out back gold fever did the same thing with the opposite results. So now im confused. They did an area with 7000 and got deep chunky + grammars, But the next day over the exact same spot they got shallow sub-grammars with the 5000. What the 7000 missed. I like the way you did the test on real targets still in situ, but there is a couple issues I see. The whole point to a 5000 is its optionability. I always see these comparisons done the same. Bigger coils, basic settings which looses the real power of a 5000. That would be like putting the 19 inch coil on the 7000 and comparing that. For a start who would use a 17x 12 to find all targets on a flogged patch. I would have gone for a 9 inch round coiltek elite or the 14x9 elite to clean up the top foot. I might have missed it but also didn't see what settings you used. Which is another great thing about the 5000. I would like to see a 5000 set with the best coil and settings for the situation. Was still a good test though, and I actually think the 5000 did just as good considering it wasn't set right for the right circumstances.

The "optionalbility" of the 5000 was never a consideration in making this video (believe me if it had been, the whole setup would have been different). This video was made primarily because at the time the new Nugget Finder Evolution coils had hit the market and there was a lot of conjecture about how a 5000 with a 17x13 Evolution coil was just as good, if not better than a 7000... I had quite a few people ask me to do a vid on it...so having said that, I probably should have put that in the Title...something like..."the 5000 with a 17x13 evolution compared to a GPZ". The argument at the time was that a 5000 with the 17x13 could out perform the 7000. That's why it was used. ALSO, as I said in the video, it was NOT used to initially find the targets... the GPZ was...so this was purely a Target Test comparison of ALREADY located targets. Having said that, if anything, this video proves just how powerful the 5000 is with such a Big coil on such incredibly small targets... which is exactly why it was done on flogged ground...to highlight just how good it is, because by default the only gold that was going to be found there was not going to be easy to find or hear.... and this brings me to my next point... You assume I used basic settings on the 5000 even though you say that you didn't see the settings I used... so I have to ask...how exactly did you come to the conclusion that the settings were basic? I can assure you, the settings I used were not conventional, and venture to say, if not employed, the 5000 may not have performed as well as it did. Finally, about your remark "setting your detector right, for the right circumstances" ... Firstly, as I said , this video was specifically about the 17x13; secondly, while on the subject, (and here's where I part ways with the status quo), perhaps one of the biggest misnomers out there....consider this...If as an operator you are always changing and adjusting the set up of your detector according to any one of the miriad of conditions out there... then the truth is... you probably don't TRULY know and understand your detector... and if you continue to change it's set up everytime... you probably never will. a 5000 in the hands of a proficient operator is by far better than a 7000 in the hands of poor operator...and VICE VERSA.. so the answer is not so much the machine, but more the operator. Regards Aussie

Hey Aussie bloke prospector, I’m guessing John??? My grandma passed away in the late 90’s and my mum passed away 30/12/18. When we were cleaning out Nan’s up stairs I found a jar of opals bits and pieces probably $2000 today they are in the bottom of my fish tanks now. Were did she get them from in Victoria???
