it is said that every metal fan has their first metal song that made them fall in love with metal and start listening to it. Well, for me it was Helloween's Ride the sky and then when Michael and the keeper of the seven keys came on, I was hooked. I was 7 years old, now I'm 43 and I still love them.

You are correct when you said Germans have a distinct melodic style that is unique in the Metal scene. They know how to create beautiful chord progressions and melodies that are catchy and powerful. Helloween, Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian and Tobias Sammet’s Avantasia and Edguy are some of the best European Metal powerhouse.

Very classical melodies. 👌

I agree that older german metal bands used to have signature sound: Heloween, Accept, Warlock, Grave Digger. But I think it's not the same now, now it's much more difficult to hear the difference between bands from different countries. I believe that's because now it's much more simple to hear the music from all over the world, and at that time local bands were mostly inspired by other local bands. And now you can be influenced by any band from any country.
@BemusingBill11 ай бұрын
I see your point, Wolfy. They evolved in relative isolation to some extant but were still inspired by those around them. American metal is very different from European metal bands especially in the 70s and 80s. The NWOBHM movement brought a ton of influence to the States yet, there is still something fundamentally different in the sound. American thrash, The Big Four, all influenced by British and German metal bands and yet created a sound uniquely their own which have turned around to inspire new British and German bands but nowadays we can access music from all over the world at a click of the mouse so there is more inspiration from everywhere.

The energy! The way they worked together and the fun they looked like they were having. That's some of what takes a band to another level. I haven't heard much music by these guys, but I think I need to hear much more. Question from a metal newbie for you, Bill. You keep mentioning Flying V guitars and it's apparent that you like them a lot. What makes them special/different?
@BemusingBill11 ай бұрын
That's a good question. Sound wise, nothing different or better than any other guitar. It's the look. I just think they look so cool! And when I see a band with two guitarists and they are both playing Vs, even cooler! They are the symbol of metal! Micheal Schanker (MSG) and his brother Rudolph (Scorpions) have been playing Vs since the early 70s, KK Downing (Judas Priest, KKs Priest) since the mid 70s, Both guitarists of Accept, Mercyful Fate have always used them and early Metallica as you noticed on the patreon video. I don't know, maybe it's the so-called mid life crisis to still want one 😁😁I figure if I keep putting positive energy into the universe maybe it'll happen. ❤️

@BemusingBill What's so amazing to me is a guitar that came out in 1958 and was really only accepted by blues players for many years has become the guitar synonymous with Metal.

The soul of Helloween is in Mr. Weikath,... I suspect, if in the future Helloween doesn't have Mr. Weikath's touch then that characteristic will disappear

Kai Hansen, Michael Kiske and Andy Deris together on stage is unbelievable. Now include Hansi Kürsch and Toby Sammet in a live-show and you have the top 5 german power metal singers on stage at once! I would kill (or die, or both?) for seeing that!

3 singers and 4 guitars, maan! 😁👍 From all their eras. And they keep staying together. Just imagine Purple, or Floyd, or Uriah Heep, or however have done this...!? 😉 The only downside is that Kai has kept Gamma Ray staying in a waiting mode for 10 years now.

I had the luck to see again Helloween here in my country Costa Rica last year, and we had the blessing to hear as an opening band Jinjer, then we had Hammerfall and last...HELLOWEEN with the 3 singers....amazing band...I never get tired of them...but lets be honest....Helloween´s signature voice is Michael Kiske without any doubt...Hansen hardly can sing anymore...but the 3 together sound quite nice...it was a great show!!!

Thank you, great reaction. If you want to continue with Helloween I can only recommend their classic Halloween (Official Live Video). But HELLOWEEN - Forever And One (Neverland) (Official Live Video) and Helloween - Keeper Of The Seven Keys (United Alive 2017) [Full HD] are also fantastic. A newer one: HELLOWEEN - Skyfall (Official Music Video). By the way, Helloween has three singers and three guitarists here. Kai Hansen, one of the guitarists, also sings. Because you mentioned Accept. They will release their new studio album Humanoid on April 26th, 2024. And if you haven't yet planned a reaction for February 28, 2024, a new single and video are planned to be released on that day.🎸💥🤘

Thank you for that heads up! I've placed the date in my calendar. Thanks for the recommendations, too. The only song of theirs that I'm familiar with is 1985s Helloween. Love that song! 🤘🎃🤘

@@BemusingBill Just in passing, I think in your reaction to Blind Guardian you mentioned that you also associate german bands with the use of Flying-V, or something like that. Another german band that you automatically associate with custom made Flying-V (in this case from Framus) is Powerwolf. Other characeristics of the band are exceptional singing and theatrical stage show.🤘

You should take the time to check also Tobbias Sammet Junior, singer of Edguy but his solo project is just amazing. I have seen him live twice and he brings a good set of singers including Michael Kiske from Helloween or Erick Martin from Mr Big. Check them...amazing operatic classical power metal...go for Reach for the Light...amazing power metal.

Boy, this song hits hard now that Cold War II is on... 😱😓🤬 Bill, if you can find the time, take a look at their album Helloween of 2021, after the reunion tour, one of their best ever, I'd recommend Skyfall or Out for the Glory for a start. There's another one in the works.

Listen to Metal since 1985 and ove the first Album Walls of Jericho, but than i listen more to Trash, Speed and Death Metal back then, later Black Metal. The Music allways was good, but i cant listen to Metal with the Bee Gee's as the singers, same with Blind Guardian and all the other 'True' or 'Power' Metal Bands, sorry, not my cup of beer. 😉🤣 Greetings from Germany.
