I guess that depends on taste. Most of Kojima's games are extremely well written but borderline cartoonish and long winded with their plots which but itself can be a turn off. My brother and I went to an anime convention in 2008, and he and I talked about Metal Gear the whole car ride. He wanted to know more about it, because at the time, I was the only person he knew who played it, and I had the reputation of beating 1, 2, and 3 non-violently (where applicable). It was kind of a 'secret achievement' to beat a Metal Gear game non-violently, or with no alerts (not being spotted). Safe to say, I was kind of an expert. The car ride from our town to the con was 6 hours, and I was able to explain MGS 1 and 3 in the SIX HOURS of time we had in the car. That's how complex the story-telling in these games is. I then explained 2 on the car ride back. Explaining MGS4 would have taken the round trip to explain. You could make a movie just explaining the plot, minus cliff-hangers, red herrings, twists and call-backs without delving into character motivations or any of the five or six deep-rooted military conspiracies woven into the series. Kojima broke the mold on deep and rich story-telling across the entire canon series of Metal Gear Solid. It's not for the faint of heart, because he spares no words on how horrifying and gut-wrenching he sees war as being. It will depress you and scar you, but you will never see anything as amazing as this franchise.

Hopefully there are some good cutscene movies for MGS. The series lives rent free in my head. That said, Hideo Kojima absolutely makes sure every game he's made in this series is canonical, the games first came out on consoles from the 1980s, or something like that. Even when MGS1 came out on the PS1, and was probably the first game that everyone got into, Hideo didn't do a soft reboot or anything, he made explicit call backs to the beginning, even as the plot became more intricate. A lot of people say "play it chronologically", which is fine, I guess, but I prefer it in release order, 1-5, plus the side games, because Hideo obviously was creating new plot as he went along, and the prequels work well as callbacks that create more depth in the older games. It's not a perfect series, but it is pretty cool.

MGSV isn't my favorite game in the series; MGS2 and 3 have more compelling stories, more interesting characters, and better pacing. But the gameplay in MGSV is by far the best. @@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Long story short, it's all a metaphor for the players' psychological relationships with war games and cool characters (not kidding). MGS 1-5 explore that in various ways, while on the surface, there is a thick set of plots involving twists and turns and discussions on modern topics. (Modern at the time, mostly still relevant today. Some parts even moreso.) For maximum ease of playability and understanding of the plot, and minimum surprise spoilers, play the games in real-world order. MGS 1,2,3,4,5. Following the in-game chronology (as others often suggest) would be different, and that would take away the effect of not knowing the answers until they are revealed in a satisfying way. The prequels are actually answering questions left open on purpose in earlier games, and without that shock from the revelation, given on queue, the effect is mostly lost. It's like being told Darth Vader is Luke's father before you even meet Luke Skywalker. The Empire Strikes Back is almost entirely wasted then.

that's what i love about the MGS. even with the more fantastical elements, it's a story about war: what it does to the world, what it does to people, what it does to history and what it does to those who fight those wars. it strips away the glamour of war and shows it in all of its stupidity and ugliness. and at the center of it are solider, men and women fighting for countries that often don't care about them and for governments who use them for their own gains and then tosses them away. then it asks "what is the point of loyalty to your nation when your nation isn't loyal to you?" that's why solid snake is a gaming icon. not just for the bad ass things he's done but for his growth as a character. he went from a solider who always followed order to a man who, despite being an outlaw, fought for what he believed: making a better world for those who come after him. hideo kojima isn't heralded as one of, if not the greatest game director of all time for no reason. you wanna know how damn good he is? listen to the final codec conversation in MGS2. and keep in mind, that game came out over 20 years ago.
@AdeptusCaeiusIII2 жыл бұрын
That codec call and the conversation just before the final boss fight (you know the one) shaped the very beginnings of my philosophy on the role of government at a very young age. Of course, as time moves on, things change, and the reasoning becomes more complex and reasoned, but the core belief remains the same. Kojima, in about five minutes of game dialogue, lays out one of the strongest socio-political treatises I've ever heard... As a freakin' PLOT POINT.

Yay! i remember your last video, when i recommended watching the Red Band one. Such a coincidence to open youtube and see minutes later you actually did it. Metal Gear Solid is a Anti-War opera. This one continues the story of Big Boss, the original "Snake" from Metal Gear Solid 3. In the previous games he started a paramilitary unit called "Soldiers Without Borders" who helped guerrillas around the globe to stabilize sovereignty in their countries against the Cold War setup. Metal Gear Peace Walker takes place, if i remember correctly in Nicaragua (i could be wrong.) and is the beginning of Snake, now Big Boss after events from MGS3 when he becomes a absolute World savior from a Nuclear Threat between USSR and USA escalating after the Cuban Missile Crisis. Then he realized he is but a puppet with strings attached in this Theater of Horror. After he let loose the chains who bounded him to USA, he starts working toward peace, and many many soldiers around the globe flock to his cause, making him as powerful as any nation. MGS5 happens after a coup that literally exploded his Mother Base, a Deep Ocean Platform from where he sent soldiers to fight around the globe, and his fellow men are being hunted one by one. He wakes up 9 years after helping his friends escape from guantanamo bay (those scenes with the girl having a bomb removed from her chest and etc) and as soon as people realize who they were treating the coma, they realize there's a IMMEDIATE DANGER in the whole hospital. From there you get back on your feet and start rebuilding the largest army in the world, with soldiers again flocking to your cause...but 9 years later, you're not the only Private Army in the 1980's... so, big misteries, amazing gameplay, and a overal very good story, with the ending being "meh" for one reason: Konami at the time had fired Hideo Kojima, the mind behind the story, and finished the game themselves as it was. Things get very weird and very....improvised? as the final missions starts. What a truly terrible end for such a Legend (Kojima being kicked from his masterpiece.) I'd still recommend playing though. Metal Gear has some "monsters and robots" to remind us that even though the game is very serious and overflowing with War and Conflict, its "just a game"...or is it? Maybe its all metaphors, dunno. Ask Kojima on that one, dude is a legend and so is Big Boss, a.k.a. Naked Snake. Grat video, you guys! have a good Sunday!

Hideo Kojima is to video games what Quentin Tarantino is to movies. He's woven the best narrative in all of gaming history. It's a story of betrayal, loyalty, identity, and so much more. It's one of the best things man has created. Explaining what the games are is like explaining what color is to a blind person. You can describe it, but it's impossible to pass on an experience without replication.
@DFWHoppe2 жыл бұрын
Yooooo. You 100% nailed it when you said watching the trailer was part of the experience. When MGSV first was "announced" they hid what it was, didn't reference anything about Metal Gear and the first trailers went viral on KZbin under a fake studio with a fake developer. Kojima even did an interview with GameSpot under fake name and kept his face obscured. Watching the viral marketing for MGSV was essential. And if you're going to be going through the stories and complex lore of the Metal Gear Solid Universe, I would say go by release date, not chronically. When they're foreshadowing events and characters in the prequels, it's better to know what they're talking about and know what you're looking at so you can be excited by it. Just my two cents.

I remember the first time seeing this trailer, I felt the hype, the anticipation, the excitement of the game that Kojima brought to us. And then Konami dropped the nuke on Kojima. The game was released with 1/4th of content not included and also altered original ideas for the game. It was heartbreaking. The ironic part of it is in the title itself. We ourselves are left with phantom pain after finishing the game. How poetic.

Solid Snake is a clone of 'The Boss' from a project, Les Enfants Terribles around 1972. 'The Big Boss' was a female operative and commander of a secret organization and 'The Boss' took her place to run covert operations This is in the game, Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater, prequel. 'The Boss' aka 'Solidus Snake' is the ORIGINAL Snake in the franchise. The project in 1972 passed on the skillset to his clones, 'Solid' and 'Liquid' Snake. Liquid Snake aka 'Ocelot'. 'Punished Snake' is a clone that was kept hidden because it was not certain if he was going to survive his utmost mission that he was assigned, Phantom Pain, which he did not.

I think you've got some stuff mixed up. The Boss was the female soldier and commando who trained Naked Snake, who as part of a convoluted spy mission had to kill the Boss and the president then gave Naked Snake the title Big Boss. Big Boss was then cloned, making Solidus, a perfect clone, and then Liquid with all the dominant genes and Solid with all the recessive genes. Ocelot was the biological son of the Boss and raised by the Patriots to be their enforcer. Ocelot eventually teamed up with Naked Snake/Big Boss. Then Big Boss made one of his soldiers his body double, Venom Snake/Punished Snake, to draw the attention of XOF. Venom Snake is the character in MGSV you play who interacts with Eli/Liquid Snake. Liquid and Solid both became members of FOXHOUND while Solidus became a warlord in Africa and then the President of the US. Solid would ultimately kill Venom Snake/Punished Snake in Outer Heaven with Big Boss finally dropped his ruse and tried to create a nation of soldiers. Then Solid 'killed' Big Boss in Zanzibar Land. Liquid then tries the same thing and is killed by Solid via the FOXDIE virus the government created to kill Big Boss and his progeny. Solidus then tries the same thing again, and is killed by Raiden, his adoptive son. Ocelot brainwashes himself to believe he is Liquid as part of a scheme to bring down the Patriots and ultimately does so, dying to FOXDIE after being beaten by Solid Snake. Big Boss then reveals he's alive and he used the body of Solidus to fake his death. He has a heart to heart with Solid Snake and dies of FOXDIE at peace at the grave of the Boss. Solid then lives his few remaining years in peace. The Boss reunites with her love the Sorrow in the afterlife. Venom Snake/Punished Snake reunites with his love Quiet the same way. So even in death people get a happy ending. I left A LOT out but that is most of what you said with the mistakes fixed. Lot of similar sounding names can get confusing, along with people claiming to be each other.

Eli is the main villain in the MGS franchise as he gets older along with others thats kin to solid snake MGS is a VERY emotional game and full of philosophies,love,romance,loss and tragedy. its more Shakespearean than Shakespear itself and is a cult hit like you wont believe. just like DMC you have to start with different orders to get the chronological story order. you can skip all the little spinoffs the order is as follows MGS3-snake eater/peace walker/ground zeros/phantom pain/MGS1/MGS2/ and finally MGS4- guns of the patriots. i highly recommend watching. Venom snake Bigboss/naked snake and solid snake the main portag, are not the same people you'll find out that all the games and people are all connected in some way shape and form to one another its just one big story so good they're even talking about making a live action movie on it. and what Metal Gear is, is a military weapon of mass destruction that changes models from time to time snake usually has to fight it

This gameplay is about as open as you can get. What I mean by that even previous titles you can sneak or go guns blazing or however you want. There's stress to manage in MGSIV and there's other factors such as broken bones in MGS3. However the canon is simple both Solid Snake and Naked Snake(aka Big Boss, aka Punished Snake) have done their missions sneaking around very very quickly and NOT killing. So while the trailers show them killing there's many achievements in the series for doing a pacifist run and saving lives in record times without being spotted. It's actually easier than it sounds because you have tons of tools for the job and not just crawling around. However I've done the crawling around method and it works out fine if you make mental notes of patrol patterns. That being said even when I say it's open there's things you absolutely can not do. Such as killing child soldiers. No Snake will kill children, they will knock them out and carry them off to save them from their imprisonment but that's one thing you might be worried about getting into the game, that you might be forced to kill children...you won't. You can't be a living legend if you are forced to break your principles. And while Solid Snake is regarded as the greatest soldier legend, Naked Snake is extremely close and they are neck and neck.

You definitely should check out the metal gear series it's like a daytime drama series like 'days of our lives' meets call of duty. The story has so many twists and turns its honestly hard to keep up with all of it. That's why the series has such long cuts cents because there is so much to unpack. But definitely a great ride, but instead of mowing everyone down, which you can, it's more geared toward avoiding conflict, you can make it through the games without killing anyone but the bosses that you have to fight against.
