Now I'm no PewDiePie or Markiplier, but when it comes to gaming, I know a thing or two about Metal Gear Solid. I've spent enough time in Shadow Moses to make an ASMR video from memory by humming the different area's music. This game deserved more than just a few TikTok trends, it needed a full 2+ hour retrospective. Even Snake's design is so iconic that it perplexes me that he's not a Fortnite character yet. Not to mention the colorful cast of supporting characters from Vulcan Raven who looks like a WWE wrestler to SSSniperwolf (the original one) and even Nastasha Romenenko born in the Ukraine.

Look, I'm not saying I'd be willing to join a paramilitary cult of mercenaries based on philosophical subtext of a video game franchise... but if I heard Kojima was behind the movement, I could probably be swayed to hear the sales pitch.

Got a demo disc with this on it outta a PS mag when I was 8. Took me a long time to figure it out, but once I did It's never felt so long waiting for a game to release. I completed this when I was 8, a lot of it went over my head but I understood enough to know it was special and went back multiple times waiting for the sequel. When the leap in graphics for MGS2 released in it's 1st trailer my tiny little 11 or 12 year old brain couldn't believe what I was witnessing. It was such a a great time for gaming. That leap from ps1 to ps2 is in my opinion the greatest leap in console power. The drastic upscale in cutscenes and in-game character modelling has been the biggest jump in that tech for consoles. We'd just never witnessed anything at that level of realism before, it opened the doors for a lot of games that followed.

In 1998 my brother and I played the hell out of the demo of mgs that came with our ps. It was still in Japanese. As luck would have it, my sister worked at blockbuster at the time it was released, so we made her use her free rental perks all the time so we could play it on the weekends. Never played such a thrilling game until then or since! I'm pushing 40 and still obsess over this game and happily watch two hour long videos of people talking about it lol.

Great video! Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro. The PS1 really had some gems, didn't it. I must've played MGS like 20 times in the late 90s. Some friends from school also played it and we used to talk about it all the time. I was 12 when the game came out. Good times.

This video is incredible! Thank you so much for making it! I first played this game when I was 9 years old. I remember playing the demo from a PlayStation magazine and not being able to continue once you got to the darpa chief. The anticipation to get the full game on release was unbelievable! This game had a profound effect on my childhood! I can't to this day describe the feelings I had playing it! Crawling through the vents for the first time, walking into the corridor where gray fox had mutilated those genome soldiers to hearing the music in the blast furnace! To this day I play this game at least once a year, along with the other 3 games (I can't play number 5, I hate it) I yearn for that feeling of nostalgia, this game takes me back to being 9 again! It's my favourite game of all time and I just can't ever imagine playing another game which would provide those same emotions. Maybe I hold this game so highly because I was so young, but then again, I'm sure if that was the case then there would be other games I would have continued to take with me for all these years. I can honestly say, in 50 years when I'm in my 80s (if I live that long) i'll still be thinking about this game! Thank you again for this incredible video!

@@evprince I really wanted to enjoy 5 but changing the voice was just a cardinal sin for me! It cannot be metal gear solid without David Hayter. Maybe I should go back and revisit it, I played it the once and completed it back in 2015. I guess also with the controversy surrounding kojima and Konami which changed the plot for the ending also played a part for me. Yep, subscribed today and look forward to more videos 👍🏼

One item you missed is Sniper Wolf’s handkerchief that I believe Otocon gives you along with the ketchup when you’re preparing to escape the the torture rooms. If you equip it the dogs outside the commanders room won’t attack you because - per Otocon - she was nice to the dogs. Cool little nugget I only found when playing recently.

The reason why 4th wall works so well in mgs, is because Kojima was able to make the player feel like they were as much apart of the game as snake was. Kojima's 4th wall is his way of thanking us for playing, and the every single person that plays the game is appreciated. Colonel had Snake. Snake had Riden, Kojima has you. Snake is more than a character, he's your companion.

The most important game in 1998. ..! I don’t believe ps2 or Xbox would’ve been as popular without this ps1 game that changed the future of games. This game created a new imagination that was infinite for game developers. And that overflowed into the ps2/Xbox era.

I was 15 when I played it in 1998 and the music, the dialogue, the "Snake? Snake!!" when you die just blew me away. I can't describe just how immersive it was. Its crazy the emotions that come spewing out of me when I watch or play this game, no other franchise or title gives me this sense of comfort and familiarity - bliss and nostalgia like this franchise has, seeing Snake at the end of MGS4 old and nearing his final days hurt ... this man is a fictional character and yet i feel some sort of wack connection towards him, he was my hero growing up i'm 33 now and i remember playing with my friends sporting the bandana brandishing my 1911 airsoft pistol with the laser sights on the end of my gun sneaking into my friends garage pelting him with bb's yelling LIQUID!!! ... its crazy how a video game can be the catalyst to such emotions and a remembrance of a much simpler time, its like the minute you smell your mothers cooking after not having it for so long ... i can't thank Hideo and the team enough for all their hard work, i think it goes without saying but the Metal Gear franchise will live on as one of the best works of art to have ever hit the consoles ...

I played through this game countless times and I *never* defeated the tank boss without using chaff grenades to mess it's lock-on tech. Also, Psycho Mantis can be defeated without using controller port 2, but it takes a while as only about 1 out of every 50 attacks lands. Me and my friend defeated Mantis this way many times before we spammed the calls to everyone enough times for Campell to say about controller port. And we only did it because we wanted to hear every call possible in the game.

The Metal Gear series gets criticized for feeling like a movie when it should have been made to feel like a game. And it's blamed for the bad trend of so many other games being made more to feel like mediocre movies instead of good games. But all of this is wrong. It actually felt like a great game with a unique and special cinematic experience weaved into it that truly enhanced the gameplay itself. The story made all the gameplay and objectives feel meaningful, and that was an unforgettable motivation for playing the game all the way through.

Thank you so much for this video. It was awesome. As a side note, i had an old CRT tv when I first played MGS that had a very dark screen because it was super old. I used to use a GameShark liberally because I didn't have the fine tuned skills I do now. So when I got to the caves after mantis, my screen was almost totally black unless I played at night. This was the one section where the Night Vision Goggles came in handy. I think Kojima and team anticipated this and included them for such a purpose.

I was there in 1998 when this game dropped. To this day, it’s remained my favorite game of all time. Even thou the gameplay is dated by modern standards, I feel like that is also part of it’s charm. The over the head view point. The blocky graphics. The constricting control scheme. It doesn’t matter. The heart and soul of this game has remained to this day. The story. The voice acting. The music. The characters. The cutscenes. All of it just felt so ahead of it’s time and felt like EVERYONE gave it their A+ effort. I play this game once a year on my PS2 because of the impact this game made on me. I bought a copy of Sons of Liberty, before I had a PS2, because I HAD to know what happened next. Rumors of a remake have come and gone, if a proper one from the ground up happens, then I say bring it on. If not, then I worry not. For I was there to experience a game that defines a genre to this very day and I can’t thank Kojima enough for bringing this game to the masses. Thank You for this video. I’m so glad to know that there are people out there who truly care about this game as I do.

For the Vulcan Raven tank battle you can use a chaff grenade to temporally disable the tank turret, allowing you to run straight towards it, only having to dodge the machine gun fire. You can also use the mines you just picked or some c4 to blow out the tanks treads which slows its movement and rotation speed, allowing you to out maneuver it and throw your grenades right into the gunners seat. If you do this successfully the grenade takes much more damage off the boss.

I shit you not, at 1:44:43 when you started saying, "The most memorable 4th wall break for me is th-" my computer started buzzing, went black, and then turned itself off, and for about 20 seconds I thought it was part of the video, but it was actually my computer doing an auto-update without my permission. XD Holy shit, that was awesome. Never doubt Mantis' power haha. Great video my dude.

The fight against Psycho Mantis is possible without swapping controllers, but im sure you need Infinite Ammo bandana.

1:12:49 chaff grenades. I watched a documentary recently about the bloke who made glitter. Yes, the sparkly metal powder that gets stuck everywhere. It’s the same company that makes chaff for military use. Turns out it’s a real thing and it’s a special metal powder that can be released to obscure radar. I don’t think it would work in real life against cameras though. I might set up a cctv camera then air cannon launch a tonne of glitter into the air and see if I can sneak past… What I like, now I’ve learned this is the representation of chaff on the game. It’s all glittery floaty particles… Seems accurate to me!

I think it could be the 1st game to give such a story/movie driven experience. It can't be understated the impact this game has had on gaming.

Fun things to add. You can use chaff to blind rex during the radar phase. I didnt know you could hide under rex during the second half though!

This was a really good retrospective. Its thesis is well-explained and restated without wearing thin. The structure is really good and I agree with the other commentors who called you a good communicator. I will give a small point of criticism which is more encouragement than anything else - being Dutch, I watched this with the subtitles on. Many times they refer to you *inserting a cutaway*, which you never really go through with. The only time you really did was with the Big Chungus meme. My feedback: Go through with them! Almost all of them would have landed really well in my opinion, either as jokes or as support for the statement you make at the time. Based on your homepage it seems like this was your oldest video so maybe you've gotten more faith in your writing/editing since, but I would definitely recommend dialing up those moments of levity or reference. Regardless of that minor point, definitely an enjoyable video the whole way through. You have a new subscriber, hoping to see more MGS retrospectives one day. Kudos :)

One quite important thing, Metal Gear (1987) was not the first stealth game, that one goes to Manbiki Shounen from 1979. Even Castle Wolfenstein from 1981 and Beyond Castle Wolfenstein from 1984 predate Metal Gear - and those two use searching bodies for ammo or using an enemy uniform as a disguise that are used to this day in games.

Ocelot never says Liquid got the dominant genes. He said Liquid wasn't the inferior one. The superior genes probably were recessive. If the superior genes were the dominant genes, there would be a whole lot more Big Boss caliber soldiers running around.
