The scary part of jpop is that they have been making songs that are honest and pure expressions of themselves without being confused by poly-collections or money-making. Because it is never held back, never crushed, and never homogenized, it produces a mixture of gems, which evolve and refine into various expressions by colliding with each other. I am terribly envious that such an environment exists in Japan.

A lot of it comes from the indies that started & got their skills making vocaloid songs & fan remixes throughout the 2000s in NicoNico. The very unique sounds of those indies in that particular website could be heard all over jpop nowadays. Diving into NicoNico, you’ll find gems with 1k views or 500 views from 15 years ago that sound absolutely amazing. The talent of these guys are insane, and they all released these kind of songs for free over the internet a long time ago. As a Touhou fan, it’s always fun to hear all these songs & know where it comes from, since Touhou music was one of the most remixed by those circles back in the day, despite Touhou being very unknown nowadays at least in the west. I can hear the complex melodies & counterpoints of Touhou music in jpop. Every time I go searching & finding songs from 15 years ago with 500 views, I feel like I’m looking through some ancient ruins finding treasures. The talent of these guys are insane.

You can interpret this song as criticism of Japanese entertainment (especially idol) industry. Some parts of it are written from fans pov while the majority was from the idols POV. It is the opening for Oshi no Ko anime whose first EP was released just few days ago and it sums up the first ep so well. Please react to Oshi no Ko anime was well. J-pop is like chameleon of a genre because there are a lot of genre mixes in certain songs. I would recommend either Chiai Fujikawa, Minami (her song Ame wo Matsu), ReoL, yournees (My Last Day)... I enjoy listen to Japanese pop instead of Western pop music. When I am not listening to J-pop I listen to rock or (black) metal music.

This song is fantastic on it's own but really shines and hits hard if you know the story it was made for. If you came back to the song after reading a brief of the story, a lot of the musical aspects and lyrics makes SO much sense, and I think as a professional musician you would have an even greater appreciation for that than me. This is really a case where context would be like the salt on some really great crispy fries.

I love how the song conveys dark and depressing themes and even cynicism about the idol industry, while sounding so bubbly. But you get those moments in which the singer's voice takes on this edge, before I even read the lyrics, just her delivery and enunciation let me know "she's being very honest and direct right now" vs the moments the song was giving the "lie" people perceive

Hello! I am Japanese, living in Tokyo. Thank you for your video. YOASOBI is insanely talented and loved in Japan and now all over the world and I appreciate that they are getting accepted worldwide. Others in the comment section have mentioned but this lyrics are heavily inspired by Oshi no Ko and having to watch the anime makes you appreciate this song much more knowing the story. Highly recommend that anime! So many twists and turns in the first episode. I would like to suggest Ado (I see other folks recommending her to you). She doesn’t show her face but she’s 20 and is a crazy talented singer. Her MVs are always animated and last year, she sang songs for ONE PIECE movie, Film RED and the songs are awesome.

I am a punk guitarist, generally interested in music and market trends. I came across Yoasobi, because I pay attention to Japanese charts, as rock tends to still chart high consistently and they have been arguably the biggest act in Japan to break out in the last two or three years. I highly recommend you check out some of their other material, while I like this song, its not very representative of their core sound. Which tends to be technical. Ayase who writes all the instrumentals is a post-hardcore guitarist/vocalist and it shows in their concept even though they write pure pop.

Yonezu Kenshi does interesting stuff! There's been a lot of interesting innovation happening in Jpop over the past 5 years thanks to Vocaloid composers. Because originally they were creating for Vocaloid, it meant that songs could be made without thinking of comfortable note jumps, rhythm or breathing intervals of a human singer, but that then triggered a trend of human singers covering Vocaloid songs to show off their singing ability. XD We then started seeing Vocaloid-esque rhythms in Jpop, as well as Vocaloid composers going into Jpop. Yonezu Kenshi is possibly the biggest name of a Vocaloid composer who became a Jpop singer songwriter. ('Lemon' is the classic; 'Kickback' is lots of fun).

This lyrics for this are extremely dark and depressing. Oshi no ko is basically meant to show the harsh reality of idol culture without sugarcoating any of it. Every transition basically represents the changing point of view of the song. From the fans of the idol, the act that the idol puts on, the idol's true feelings, and the feelings of the people around them. Which the TV I think still has significance from the song cause it's basically acting as a retrospective of this person's life. People observing it and making judgements. But holds even more significance under the context of the story behind it

It isn't a traditional J-pop song, at least, not by sound anyway. It is unique in its use of different sounds. Every now and again anisongs come out with something that has this sort of unique feel. IIRC this is trying to emulate idol music trends in Japan but with a few twists and the traditional anisong flair. This song isn't intended as a dance beat. Anisongs do tend to have shifting beats like this but most run of the mill shows have somewhat traditional anisong-like feels to them. There are definitely other interesting ones out there. I recommend looking for YOASOBI's other anisongs. They have quite a few.

I think this song does a good job of using the typical "idol" music format which is mostly present in the chores (along with the chanting in the crowd to simulate the audience cheering in sync which is a common activity at idol shows). Oshi no Ko is based around the idol industry and idol music can be considered more "vanilla" sonically. I think it was very important for YOASOBI to have the music switch to help convey the themes in the story and the relationships between characters and their circumstances. Glad you enjoyed it!

Tbh what I think about why J-pop suddenly appears to have its complexity arisen is that there was a small "pop music" community yet apart from pop culture. It's like indie music community but most of them are producers. The musicians there grind their own stuffs without worrying if it is liked generally. Most of those artists are somehow too stylistic to the pop culture Nevertheless, this community grows and finally blend into pop culture in Japan. These artists starts to restrain their unique style. So, Ayase also comes from this great place and did a great contribution into bringing these beautiful songs to the public audience. I'd say that YOASOBI is top tier in terms of popularity But for musicality, I mean the variety of elments you seek for, there're still plenty of them can do. (e.g. King Gnu, Yonezu Kenshi, Vaundy, hitorie, Ai Higuchi, Inoue Taku, Ado, Yorushika, Eve, Wednesday Campanella... I've just seen the j-pop rank to find some that I'm familiar with) And the funny thing is that some would call this templating. They'd think this be like packing things that the audience would like and integrate them which we already feel like super amazing🤣

In this case it's not that the Yoasobi video is "anime themed" it that this song(or a 90 second edit of this song to be precise) is the opening theme for an anime, and sung from the point of view of a character in that show, so they made an extended version of that anime's opening for the full song.

oshi no ko has only 1 episode so far but it was super good and got me into the anime immediately, 100% recommend. it's good to watch the anime and read the lyrics translated into english as well as it adds a whole new deeper meaning to the song. super well-written. i also recommend ado, she is the artist who sang all of the songs for one piece: film red (the antagonist is a singer with a connection to the protagonist), they are all honestly so beautiful but her most popular one is new genesis. she has an album dedicated to the movie if you want to check out all of those songs. truly amazing music for great animes. i would also recommend zutomayo if you liked yoasobi as they are kind of a similar genre, and they both have soft-voiced singers with crazy good animated music videos.

SPOILER The song hits hard because it is the description of Ai Hoshino. It shows her false faces, her ambitions, her lights and shadows, her image bordering on divinity, her flaws, and her most sincere and sensitive side. First, we see her as a great Idol, the perfect liar. Then we see the envy she generates, the dark side of the Idol entertainment world where she outshines the talent of others. After that, we see her ambitions to become the greatest, the first star who will never reincarnate because she is so unique. Later on, we see how she has formed such a mystical image that she has become a deity in the mortal world, with her Aquamarine sweat and Rubies behind her eyes. In the animation, we see her legacy in the eyes of her biggest secret: her twin children and her way of expressing her love, with lies. Right after such an epic display, we witness a very sensitive part of her being, the belief that even without having loved and without having been loved, she still has total faith that her lies will come true, that she will love and be loved, while we see her children holding her hand in front of her deeply wounded heart. In the end, we see that she finally managed to love; we see her children in front of the television, watching what their mother was, and we see how her spirit comes to embrace them as she would have loved to do, ending with her children looking at each other, smiling, while the song ends with Ai's final words before dying, addressing her children: "It wasn't something I could tell you before, but now I can. It's definitely not a lie. I love you." Wonderful. It's as if Ai's spirit is singing from beyond the veil of death, and for the first time, honestly and sincerely, showing herself as she is. Then we watch the series and see the first episode with the solid image of what Ai was through this song, and they show us the most heart-wrenching and tragic scene of the anime and manga (very well directed). I didn't cry when I saw it for the first time, but it was when I deeply understood the song that I watched it again and cried my heart out. It's one of those songs that improve the character immensely. Ai Hoshino, she appeared so little, yet we got to know her so much... The worst part is that it's so addictive that I still can't get it out of my head, and it always reminds me of how tragic Ai's character is, it's sad and beautiful at the same time. At least, I don't get as sad as I was in the first week when I listened to the song and watched the episode for the first time.

If you wanna try more J-pop then Continue viewing Yoasobi. A recent popular one by Yoasobi (other than this) is called Running Into The Night. May or may not be your cup of tea.

The song is actually all about episode 1 of "Oshi no ko." I'm surprised that the lyrics cover the thorough story.

Actually there is something more than just the episode 1 in the lyrics. If you know Japanese, it covers the story of "45510" by aka akasaka which features the perspective of another member of B-komachi. They are hugely related and some lyrics are copied from the light novel word to word. I got goosebumps when listening after reading "45510".

People who have been composing music using vocaloids born in Japan have become major and are sweeping the current j-pop. In particular, this song skillfully fuses genres that have been exhausted, making it feel somewhat nostalgic. That's why I think it's easy for fans of all genres to accept it. By the way, k-pop is influenced by 90's j-pop, and j-pop is influenced by American pop and rock in the late 80's.
