We need a video about Canadian metal in the 80's! Anvil, Killer Dwarfs, Annihalator, Exciter, Helix, Lee Aaron, Labyrinth, and Mindstorm just to name a few. There was a record store where i went to high school in Starkville, MS of all places and he would get in a lot of the lesser known bands cassetes and vinyl and some of the Canadian metal magazines. The MSU radio station would also have a metal show on Saturday nights playing many of the bands you have already talked aboot (see what i did there? haha) and Canadian metal bands.

Once again, an unbelievable video… so well researched and you clearly care about quality. Bad ass, as always. DARK AGE did come out on picture disc, btw. Vocalist Robert Stevens sent me a signed copy of the reissue CD a while back. Great record. A few members of Alien moved to LA and hooked up with Rik Fox after leaving Steeler and they had a band called SIN for a while. Good stuff. Singer Frank Starr joined The Four Horsemen years later but has now sadly passed away. You schooled the heck out of me with this one… props, bro. A+

I dunno, man. I grew up in the 80s and cassettes frankly sucked. They broke, they got eaten by tape players and their sound quality degraded over time. It was a hit or miss proposition to buy a used cassette. I get the nostalgia for vinyl and CDs at least sounded great, but cassettes? Ugh.
@TheRadioAteMyTV
@TheRadioAteMyTV Жыл бұрын
@@johnchedsey1306 I would record a copy of them to keep the original pristine, same with vinyl, but the idea of seeing band names stacked up and to know there was art work to be seen and valued along with an actual item to touch instead of a bunch slides on a phone/ tablet or buttons on computer, was truly a special moment. along with glory of the size of the album art work on vinyl. I have no love for vinyl beyond the size of the cover. The ridicules amount of care they demand and still they hiss and pop. I don't miss that at all, and that people are buying vinyl again instead of CD's ok, boomers LOL!

I really dig "Metal School"!!! It's highly informative! This gentleman knows his stuff, and knows it well!!! I find myself doing a lot of reminiscing, and getting turned on to albums or bands that I wouldn't give a chance in the 1980's. What about the awesomely classy self-titled one and only masterpiece e.p. / release by 3rd Stage Alert? This band was shamefully underrated and overlooked. I often wonder why this band broke-up, and what their sophomore offering would have sounded like if they would have stayed together. Most certainly badass nonetheless is my guess! Keep up the great work on the videos here! It's a pleasure to watch such well done videos!

@@OATMEALCMC yeah the best time to experience music is probably in your teens when you're old enough to appreciate it and get exposed to more mature material. @@xenos_n.Yeah I was young enough to feel like I was experiencing the entire scene from the outside and wasn’t playing playing drums until the late 80’s. Back then the most popular guys in the scene played in a band. I got into the scene late but I still got a taste before it was over in 1991 at the snap of a finger. Everytime I think of how great it would have been to be 22 in 1985 and experiencing this great era to its fullest ......I feel a sigh of relief that I’m no where near my 60’s.

I was doing a bit of research on Alien on the Encyclopaedia Metallum, and I think I might've found out the reason they didn't go any farther than the EP. Their bassist was convicted of murder a few years after the EP came out. What apparently happened was that he went to a guy's house, beat him with a crowbar and shot him in the head, and the guy's teenage son was an accomplice in the killing. And as far as I can gather from the records I looked at, the motive was robbery of stereo equipment. I mean, if my bandmate got together with a child to kill his dad over a few hundred bucks worth of speakers, finding a replacement for him and recording a follow up wouldn't be the first thing on my mind.

Hammerwitch & Darrin K I went to the same high school with Darrin. He was THE guitarist in our school at the time. The guy was beyond talented while still in school. According to an unconfirmed urban legend, he was at one of the guitar shows in the DFW area one year and tearing up some guitar while a well-known touring pro was standing there watching him with a bit of green in his eyes. Again, unconfirmed urban legend, but Darrin was and probably still is that good. I casually knew him thru a few people and was happy to hear he got the HW gig. Unless something has changed Darrin now plays a fingerpicking new-age style of guitar. He can still tear up an electric, but his passion now is acoustic. I think he intimidated a lot of people in school and beyond. However, I knew I was far from his level, so instead of looking at him as local competition, I just admired the guy and enjoyed listening to him play when I could. I saw one of Hammerwitch's first DFW appearances when they opened for Pantera at a big theater show in Dallas (not The Basement or some other local club, a good-sized theater). I think Cowboys From Hell was just released, and Pantera was about to change the world. HM was one of two bands that opened, and they tore it up. I remember the song "Brainchild." Darrin was a great fit when he joined them sometime later.

When I first saw the title of this video, I said to myself, "He better have the Alien EP on there for credibility's sake" and after 4 bands I was starting to lose hope. Then... POW! There it was! Cosmic Fantasy featured in the headliner's position. Not only did you not lose credibility you have risen to a whole new level! Joking with you on the losing credibility thing of course, (and even if you were to lose a little cred you have plenty to spare as far as I'm concerned). So, on a serious note, I thank you once again for giving me a welcome taste of the days of my youth as I was in my prime in the 80s (age 15 to 25) and many of the bands you feature bring back memories I haven't thought of in over 30 years. Your time and efforts in researching and making these videos are very much appreciated in these hallowed halls. KUDOS once again on a job well done.

E.P.s were pretty important back in the '80s. The first Metallica album that I ever bought was "Garage Days Rerevisited E.P.". In the early 90s, I had signed a very small record contract and we only had the funds to release an E.P., but with a twist. It was a split E.P. with another band to help with the costs. We were a prog-hard rock band, but we took inspiration from the punk/hardcore scene in regards to releasing a split E.P. Our 4 tracks were on side A, and the other band had 4 tracks on side B.

Avalon's vocalist on "Dancer in the Eye if the Storm" and "Perfect Illusions" sounds more than slightly like Bruce Dickinson, and that's likely on purpose. The other thing about metal EPs from this era is that they were often pressedv as a 12" at 45 RPM, which is the best sounding vinyl format.

Great video! Nice job. Allow me to nominate Kratos from Cleveland and their one EP 'Iron Beast' for the next video of one EP bands. Awesome record from an awesome indy, self-financed band and EP. \m/ \m/

Wow, I didn't know James Mgearty was in a metal band, wild, his bass on the first Christian Death album is epic.

Love Roxann's voice on Don't Say Goodbye. The verses have always had a '50s vibe to me. Such a jam.

Excellent video as always. Superb bands all the way through. Was just about to tell the story about when Child Saint ripped off Dave Mustaine but you got to it in the video. always a step ahead. hehe Cheers!

Rail ( rail EP) the hardest song on this EP was 1,2,3,4 Rock ' n' Roll I'd buy the Dark Age & Hammer Witch EPs,if I knew where to find it

Rail is awesome, with their debut album Arrival sitting on a pedestal in my hallowed halls. Unfortunately the fact they released two full length albums in addition to their EP would have disqualified them for this particular video, but they still deserve to be featured possibly as a band retrospective.

oh hey, that Avalon is pretty good! so is that Dark Age ep, damn!! Hammer Witch, pretty damn cool, as well!! total brutality!! WOW😱, Im really lovin all these so far...Nytemare...epic, sweet melodic Metal, and an absolute killer spider image on the album cover!! some epic, solid Metal... seriously!! Alien, pretty o.k. to me, but not near as epic as the prior 4, neither is Child Saint...just o.k.... out of all 6 bands, Nytemare has to be my favorite!! I really appreciate your video on these bands, never had heard of any of em, added the first 4 band's stuff to my Discogs profile. immense thanks man, for a massively, truly epic video of Metal ✨unknown✨...

That last avalon track very much reminds me of an early version of children of bodom with the synth and guitar combination

Back in 1996, I was perusing a little store in Las Vegas, Nevada, US called Record City. They had a cassette bin that had carious tapes in different states. I found one that had a kind of DIY label with booklet. It was a compilation of sorts and it had Hammer Witch on it "Psycho" and "Judgement Day". I was looking into it and found out then that there was nothing more. Kinda sad.

I personally know 2 local bands that should have " made it " , Wargasm , and Auditory Imagery . Both from SE Ma. , they had some interest with labels w / AI being offered a Australian label but having to travel across the entire planet to relocate and take a huge risk wasn't really an option unfortunately . They were a Fates Warning type band , which is also CRIMINALLY underrated , treated poorly by major labels.

I was lucky enough to discover Hammer Witch 'Legacy of Pain' in early 00's and just for fun I used to tell my mates that I have unreleased Demolition Hammer demo because they sounded very similar to them on that album.🙂 I never knew Randy Burns (Death, Dark Angel, Crumbsuckers..) produced Dark Age EP.. Blacklist were also cool one EP band. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnimgXZoaturjbM

Given by the samples (excluding Dark Age's "Viper" which I know in full), these are some fantastic selections. I'm gonna be occupied on these for a bit.

Was wondering if you would do one of these type vids. Love your band retrospectives too of course but doing these type vids seems like it's even harder work. I doubt there's a lot of info on who was even in some of these bands.

If you ever do a video of "never released" metal from the 80s/ early 90s era, check out Apostasy from Wichita Kansas. Way ahead of it's time! Soilent Green EP and Land of Hate demo. (BTW, it is soon to be released in Europe after many years)

Great job! Now I can't get Avalon's Hard Loving Man and Dark Age's Viper out of my head...😋 Oh, and there's even an awesome review at MA written just the other day for former's Entire Works Compilation - check it out! 🥳😎🎸 Off the top of my rattled head, allow me to return the favour by steering you towards another 80s obscurity I'm obsessed with...Tyson Dog! 😜
