Aria is an incredible band, it has lovely music, and as a huge Iron Maiden fan (my favorite band), I’ve got to say that this band gives you a lot of Maiden vibes (for example 1:11 gives me Powerslave era vibes, that bassline is very Steve Harris-esque, 21:22 gives me Deja-Vu vibes, that legatos are very Dave Murray-esque, and the following part (21:29) remembers me of one of the licks from Run to the Hills solo, and 14:42, as you said in the video, it’s clearly inspired by Afraid to Shoot Strangers, Night is Shorter than Day album gives me a lot of Fear of the Dark album vibes), the Maiden style Aria uses is one of the reasons why I love Aria. I met Aria because I once saw the famous Monsters of Rock 1991 in Moscow, where lots of famous bands acted, including an unknown Soviet band called E.S.T, and when I started hearing E.S.T, I met some other Soviet bands such as Black Obelisk, Kruiz, Metal Corrosion Aria, and some others, and since then, I’ve been hearing Soviet metal bands a lot. Song "To Kill a Dragon" is an art reference to 1944 play "The Dragon" by Evegeny Shwartz (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evgeny_Schwartz#The_Dragon) The main character, knight Lancelot, kills the cruel ruler of the land - the Dragon, only to find out later, that the folks deliberately bow under another Dragon to rule over them. So, the moral of this story is: if you want to kill the Dragon, you'll need to kill a Dragon in yourself first, or you'll become one.

Thank you so much for the video and popularisation of this amazing band for english-speaking people! I grew up with this music and Aria was the first metal band I've ever heard and I like it despite the people who say that Aria is just a copy of Iron Maiden (such a great and loved by me too). Greetings from Russia! Aria forever! \m/

Thanks to your video, Aria's become one of my favourite metal bands lately. I love metal and have long been interested in learning about life in the Soviet Union since it seems so different to how things were here in the US; glad to hear they were rocking out just as hard as we were. Aria's influences are pretty obvious, but they're absolutely on the same level as those bands. I hold Playing with Fire as amongst the greatest metal albums of the '80s...and I don't even know any of the lyrics yet! Guess I better start learning some Russian, even if only to sing along with Kipelov.

Thank you very much! Some information from the russian fan: - "Life for Nothing" is about greed, when one man spent his whole life making money. I love its guitars very much. - "America Left Behind" is about a lazy traveller, who reads the magazine instead of travelling, because he is a coward. "He realized that the cruise is a dangerous caprise, in your trip you'll have a surprise, it will be a storm instead of a breeze, and it's pretty hard to get a visa..." - Holstinin's favourite band is Jethro Tull, he is a huge fan of Ian Anderson and Martin Barre. - Bolshakov and Holstinin both like Judas Priest, but Bolshakov and Granovsky have become friends and decided to work with each other. - "Will and Reason" is an anti-war song, though neither band members nor censors knew that this is a slogan of Italian fascists. - "Serving Evil Force" is Holstinin's fear of a nuclear war, that's why in its beginning you can hear an atom bomb. - "Hero of Asphalt" is about the teenage rebel, who rides a bike and crashes into the same guy on the other bike. - "Street of Roses" is about Jeanne Duval. - "Rock the World" is about street fighters. Kipelov sings: "The howl of the beast prophesies death..." (the last word is "HOOOWL") - "Give 'em "Hell" is about heavy metal fans. Your video perfectly shows how they say about fans after this song. - "You'd Better Believe Me" is about near-death experience of a guy from "Hero of Asphalt" after the bike crash. - "Paranoia" represents the theme, when a woman is afraid to meet a stranger, when she walks at night. Slayer's "Tormentor" represents the same theme. - "Dirt" is one of my favourite songs of all time. It is the dark romance: the girl kicked the guy out of the house and he goes to the brothel. "Live goods. Frost in their hearts, fire in their eyes..." (prostitutes) - "Paradise Lost" is a light romance. "Sleep in my hands, listen the rain song..." - "Burning Arrow" is the train, which goes to the bridge, and the bridge is broken. - "Prince of Darkness' ball" and "Blood for Blood" are based on Bulgakov's "Master and Margarita". - "Playing with Fire" is about Paganini. - "Kill the Dragon" is about the tyranny. "Kill the dragon inside yourself". The guy fights against monsters, but becomes a monster himself. - "Curse of the Seas" is about The Flying Dutchman. P.S. THIS VIDEO IS A TOTAL BADASS!

They are my absolute favorites of all time and no album has ever given me the feeling that Hall of the Mountain King does.

now THIS is a pleasent surprise. the GOAT of metal from behind the iron curtain and their first 5 albums are mandatory for any metalhead Also fun fact: after Kirill Pokrovsky quit the band, he moved to Belgium and worked as a composer, most notably on the Divinity games up through Divinity Original Sin 1 before he passed away If you want two more Iron Curtain bands to cover I highly recommend Hungary's Pokolgep and Yugoslavia/Bosnia and Herzegovina's Divjle Jagode. Two excellent bands that never get their due. As well as the Heavy Metal of the Eastern Bloc youtube channel since that dude is a goldmine for this stuff
@staalhard6663 жыл бұрын
During those early Divine Divinity development days Kirill Pokrovsky was allowed to live above those old Larian studios. Until one night he fell asleep drunk with his bath still running, flooding the game developer's office in the process. Hahaha.

One of my favorite bands (Kipelov solo stuff is also very good). I discovered Aria during a trip to Germany in 2001, back then it was very hard to get their music in any format. But throughout the years I have managed to acquire their complete catalog (LP's, CD's, CD singles, DVD's, even VHS). I saw them when they came to the USA in 2013, they only did 2 small club shows as somebody already mentioned (NYC and Boston). But, it's still in my bucket list to go and see them in a stadium show in Russia, with their full production.

Great Metal lesson, dude! Aria in Russia is very well-known amongst metalheads, though after Valeriy Kipelov left it became a commercial project, so oldschool fans stick to the early ages of Aria. I recommend listening to Mavrin (a former Aria guitarist Sergey Mavrin formed the band with his name in the title). It's worth listening to, moreover Sergey plays a unique fortepiano style on his guitar, I bet you'll like it! Stay metal!)

Video clips were always the weakest side of this great, great band but you've managed to nail it with irony. Honestly, thank you, man!

Jsem z České republiky a divím se, že u nás, v bývalém československu, v době kdy bylo ještě SSSR, byla tahle kapela uplně neznámá. Divím se že v SSSR takový styl byl povolený. U nás v Československu rockery a metalisty zavíraly do vězení. V lepším případě měli zákaz hraní a byly pod hledáčkem komunistů.

Blood for blood-a song about Pontius Pilate. About his suffering after he sent Christ to his death. It is based on the book by Mikhail Bulgakov "The Master and Margarita", which we have a cult. Night is shorter than day - the work of Albert Camus "The Outsider". The prisoner in the cell is awaiting execution of the death sentence. A priest came to see him. He refuses to confess. Chorus: The night is shorter than the day, the day will kill me, the m of illusions in it burns, all living things disappear, just like me. Calm: based on the novel "Francis Speight"by Jack London. Sailors stuck in the middle of the ocean in a calm, suffer from thirst. They decided to sacrifice one to save the others. One of them, by lot, sacrificed himself. Then I will quote: "No, thunder did not fall from heaven when they drank blood like animals. But the brilliance of the cross, which we call southern, has become unbearable." Executor is a very scary song. I did not find the source, but the meaning is that the executioner (this is a kind of eternal being), when he executed, and was sure that he was doing a good deed, but after the execution of Jesus, he realized that he was doing evil, he dreamed of liberation, turned to God, but saw that " Darkness reigned in His eyes." And then he fancied himself a God. Battle - fight against alien entities that do not touch the human body, but kill feelings and emotions. The heroes of the fifth, Aryan race must win. In this case, the Aryan race is not related to fascism, but relies on esotericists, including Elena Blavatsky, who believed that the current generation of humanity is the fifth, and before that there were the first people, the Atlanteans, Hyperboreans and Lemurians. And a hint of the band's name.

Very nice analysis. Personally I am not a fan of Zhytnyakov's albums as I like Kipelov and Berkut style more, but maybe its just nostalgia talks to me(my teenage years were Kipelov and Berkut Aria and now I dont listen to it anymore) Also check out their lyrics(translate it), fairly good even if goofy at times. Aria was one of the bands that shaped my taste of music and will always have a special place in my heart
