I guess aside from the jitters or the mental preparation, Stell also gets in the character of the song to pull off the right emotions. What I like about this performance is I moved from reminiscing/melancholy to sadness and loneliness, to longing and desperation of not being so alone. He takes us there. You can hear in the cries, the cracks, the sighing, grit… That sets Stell apart from many singers. He brings the vulnerability despite knowing he can pull it off when he is in his goofy side.

It was an unplanned performance. When Stell was about to rehearse for his three opening act songs, he chanced upon DF playing the piano. DF randomly asked Stell if he wanted to sing ABM so he only had a brief moment of “trial/run” with DF like singing an audition piece. Stell said in one of his interviews, he was mouthing/planning/practicing on the spot how he will sing the next verses while in the middle of his ABM performance. This is how professional he is and innate his talent is! Stell is unbelievably talented, multi-tasking right in front of critics while in collaboration with a legend! And he delivered!

Loved your reaction it’s totally the best rendition for me too! You nailed the part where there’s pure emotion before the money note that contrast was mind blowing! And this was not rehearsed an impromptu request after David Foster heard him sing during sound check, if he wants to sing this at the main show! From opening act to show highlight! And if you watched the intro David made to add more pressure to Stell, you’ll appreciate even more how he nailed this! In a nutshell David said Celine took a few tries to hit the high note and Stell only has that one chance then and there! Talk about pressure that’s why he was nervous. More SB19 please!

He was the opening act for David Foster in Manila with 3 songs: All I Ask( Bruno Mars version), Defying Gravity( from Wicked) and of course his debut single , Room. At the middle of the concert, he was called back on stage by David Foster asking him if he would do another song, All by Myself. Of course, no one says no to that opportunity bc he has sung this song previously in the past. Turned out ok and he was given a Standing Ovation.

Such an awesome performance there knowing that he was just supposed to do an opening act with 3 songs, never knowing that he'll get to sing this impromptu. That's how great a singer he is. Stell's performance is nothing short of impressive. And what makes it even more incredible is that it was unplanned, not part of the concert repertoire, and an impromptu challenge from David Foster. It's insane to think that he had already sung three high-pitched and vocally demanding songs, and to top it off, he's not in the best condition (he's sick). I had to mention, too, that a day prior to the concert, SB19 had intense performances at an event. And the elephant in the room-he's a man, hitting the piece in female key and doing it cleanly. Stell is a legend in the making!

The reason why stell is catching his breath because he is very nervous at that time .. this is actually an impromptu, no practice or rehearsal happened.

He is nervous, he talks about it during an interview. In front of David Foster without enough practice. You can the eye contact between them and David is kinda assiting him the timing. He's vulnerable at that time, mumbling the last part as if he is reminding himself the lyrics. I can say his high notes is crystal clear and doesn't hurt my ear.

It IS so insane 😆 You were totally making sense with the contrast by the bridge part! That part right there just added so much emotion and drama to the entire arrangement, bringout out the progression from internal to external turmoil. That note was so soft and so tiny and thin that it almost resembled a crack that the audio didn't pick it up. I only noticed it when I saw another version where there was a vooser shot of his performance and he really maintained that note 😍

4:07 During Stell’s interview, he told the reporter that he was trying to practice the last part of the song “… by myself anymore, by myself anymore, by myself…any…” because that particular part was noted out by David Foster during their short rehearsal. Imagine performing live on stage and trying to “practice” the ending part of the song

This song wasn't in the plan. He was supposed to sing 3 songs as frontact when david foster ask him an hour before the show if he could sing all by myself. They just had a quick run of the song so stell would learn the arrangement & that's it. So he sang 3 songs first as front act before he was called again to the stage to sing 'all by myself'

He definitely delivered the way the song is supposed to be delivered. The soft almost broken down (which others think it was imperfection but I think it was a nice touch, whether it's intended or just in the moment, to show the intense emotion he was suppressing within), then the belting is shouting it out to the world. The part where he was mouthing something, he was practicing that arrangement in his mind since it wasn't planned that he will perform the song. David Foster only taught him the arrangement 2hrs before the show and it was a very quick rehearsal. As you said he can pull off such high notes, but he was very nervous esp they played Celine Dion's interview about how difficult it was to sing this song. On top of that, David Foster said that Celine took several times to hit that note and Stell only gets this one chance. That according to Stell in his interview that got him so nervous.

That “fragile” part was directed by David Foster during their one “practice” session. Fact is, Stell was not even supposed to sing this song that evening and when Stell was about to do his rehearsal for his planned songs, David Foster asked him to try to sing this song. During this one run, DF also told him to remember that “Don’t want to live by myself anymore, by myself anymore” arrangement and then asked Stell if he could sing the song during the concert, to which Stell agreed. So when he was “mumbling” to himself during the actual performance, he was actually practicing that arrangement at the end of the song that DF told him to remember.

He was so nervous that moment hence the deep breaths in between, he wasn't very prepared for that song, if you watch up close, you can even see him murmuring,coz he's remembering the arrangement placed by Mr. David, they only had few runs of that song before the concert itself, he was just supposed to be the front act,but when Mr. David asked him if he wanted to perform that song, he was challenged, and shy to say no,so he just said yes, thinking that it is once in a lifetime chance to show his skills..he narrated the behind the scene story in an interview after that concert.
