This has now been my edc since Aug 2012. 10 years and 4 months. It's been beat, dunked, batoned, and had a wave opener cut into it with a dremel. In those 10 years I tried replacing it with 2 buyouts, a 940, a 550 and 555. An Emerson CQC7, and a Delica 4. No other blade has lasted in my pocket for more than 2 days and that just the 940. In the end, the features of the Byrd Meadowlark 2 are just perfect for me (and mine is 1/2 serrated.) I use it everyday, multiple times a day for everything from cutting, food prep, scraping wasps nests, and even cut a jeep tire off its rim once with this knife to help make room for the rim. At this point.... I think its earned a place with me forever, lol.

+1 sub. I've been daily carrying an FRN Meadowlark 2 for about 7 years. I don't abuse it, but I don't baby it. Disassemble and clean it once a year. It's still as good as the day I got it. I've got a spare put away just in case I lose Number One. Unbeatable value.

I have both and like the feel of the Byrd more actually. It’s my box opener / pry bar and knife. Not having to worry about price. Many times a day for years now and works great. My Delica is more taking out with me and the Byrd a daily tool at the house. I may buy one more actually.

Byrd knives inLightweight (FRN) are now $35-$40... but I think still very worth it. The G10 versions are great for harder work. These are all working knives, so great for hikers or people doing labor. I don't think anyone does 8cr13MoV heat treating better than Spyderco and Brad in this price range especially. The Byrd Robin, Meadowlark and Cara Cara 2 are cheaper material versions of the Dragonfly, Delica and Endura.. just about 1/2 price for FRN and ~60% for G10.

My favorite part about that knife is the copyright symbol next to the thumbhole. Like, ok Glesser, if anyone is wasting their time cloning Byrds, the knife world really has gone to the birds.

@@metal_complex I know I’m late to the party here but i pretty much agree with your assessment between the Byrd meadowlark and the Spyderco delica MC. I do prefer the feel of the handle material on the delica but I like the fit and feel of finger choil on the meadowlark.I remember being able to buy the Byrd meadowlarks for $15 bucks. For a user knife it’s hard to argue with the price difference. I also like the comet hole on the Byrd 👍
@timbo43746 жыл бұрын
You pay for the name when you buy a Spyderco. The Delica is going for over $80 with their last price increase. You can get a much better knife for much less today..like a CIVIVI for instance. This is a good option for people on a budget, or if you need a beater that you don't have to worry about damaging. Personally though, in this price range, I would probably go with a K-Bar Dozier. You can pick one up for between 18 and 20 bucks, and it's built like a tank, but that's just me. Nothing wrong with the Byrd.

I really like the looks of Spyderco knifes I just dont like the price of the ones with a perfect circle ! I have an Astute because it has all the markings and the perfect circle for under $50, I just got the Cara Cara 2...great knife (keeping it in my truck) a little on the large side but an awesome knife, I just ordered the Meadowlark 2, it should be just the right size for (when it gets its turn) EDC . You cant beat the price on any of the Byrd series of Spyderco knifes.

I've got the Crossbill and Robin with stainless handles (in lieu of being able to locate a plainedge Harpy and CoPilot, respectively) and I was surprised at how solid they felt for the price.

You questioned something along the lines of will the Byrd last as long as 10 years vs an unnamed, longer duration for the Delica? Actually neither are heirloom knives, and both will probably last about 10 years under normal-light duty. The materials are similar enough that to expect one to last longer than the other would be expecting too much, and there are many, many knives out there that are built to last long enough to pass on to your grandkids... just not a "plastic" handled knife that will see a "lifetime" of use. These are both essentially throw-away knives after 5-10 years of good use (not knife drawer use). I've owned one of the original Spyderco Worker knives from about 20 years ago, and even that "all stainless" knife has not held up all that well to hard usage. I've also owned several Delicas and a couple of Enduras, so I do have some experience with these knives. But if long term usage is required in a knife of this sort from Spyderco, then an all stainless version might do the trick. I'm not knocking Spyderco...I love them!
@hailbaphomet2 жыл бұрын
Technically that plastic will be around for the next like 300,000 years. If that's not heirloom I don't know what is lol.

I agree maybe the Byrds aren't as good a material but at the price they aren't meant to be. Sure I would prefer the Shaman but it isn't in my price range right now. They may be ugly but if they cut then they are doing what a knife is meant to do at a price I can live with.
@MybeautifulandamazingPrincess2 жыл бұрын
How are they ugly? They look exactly like an equivalent Spyderco except the hole that's different

You mentioned several times that for the price you would go with other knives over the Delica, what would you recommend? I'm alternating between carrying a Kershaw Chill and a Dragonfly, but am in the market for a new knife that will be infrequently used.
@metal_complex6 жыл бұрын
Kershaw Blur in S30V is one of my absolute favorites in that price range. Fantastic knife! You should be able to find it around $75-$80. I'm also seeing the Cold Steel American Lawman on Ebay brand new in XHP for about $80-$85.

I think all knife companies should do this, cheap budget versions of their more expensive knives. I saw the ganzo fake spiderco and it's a decent bit cheaper than the meadowlark ($15 vs $30) but I'd much rather support the actual brand than some Chinese knockoff

There ain't nothing that cuts & slices better than a delica 4 & probably that Byrd you had there that I know of..my other more expensive knives stay in the drawer since I have gotten the delica.i do have a endela in cv20 on the way for a longer cutting edge tho lol.the seki city knives Spyderco produces are just great cutting tools imo
@jandlp146 жыл бұрын
Agree 100%. The delica and PM2 are the two most overrated and overhyped knives ever. The meadowlark is the knife I started all my kids on. Simple function, stainless steel and cheap. Easy to teach them how to sharpen on 8cr13 also.
@Phyxsius_852 жыл бұрын
Ganzo Firebird F759M is good alternative , it is copy of Byrd Meadowlark 2 . Cost about 15 bucks , 440C and its better build quality . I have mine for a year now , medium EDC tasks i did not put a drop of oil . I just wash it in warm water , dry it sharp it and its going strong .

I bought the hawkbill version. Something fun about a dependable knife you just don't care about haha. I still have fun with it by Spydie dropping it. Don't get me wrong I love my super steels like 10v, cruwear, m4, and s110v but the byrd line is seriously good value. 8cr13 is stupid easy to learn and make an edge on. Might not stay on forever but it's also easy to sharpen anyways.
@blueeyeswhitedragon98395 жыл бұрын
Ryndel:- Right on. Bought my first Byrd about a year ago and am still surprised at the quality.

$22 for a Byrd knife? Not here in the dear old rip-off UK. For this knife, you're looking at more like $45, and a Delica would be around $120.

@metal_complex3 жыл бұрын
You're going to have to try again with that sentence. No idea what you're trying to say.
Ive never had an issue with Spyderco, Benchmade, or any of the other brands in the same price tier. Their warranties have always been more than enough to cover defects. They don't cover broken blades or abuse because you'd have to be doing something stupid and unnecessary with your knife in order for that to happen. Use the right tool for the job and you won't need to worry about what the warranty does or doesn't cover.
