You were spot on! Billie is actually showing what it feels like to be submerged in people’s “secondhand smoke,” and surrounded by their addictions overall. Also if you noticed she was very “normal” looking in the video. White park bench, white clothing, brunette hair. Everything around her almost looks padded as if she’s referring to mental illness. She also made her voice sound almost distorted to make it sounds like “recycled breath” as she explained in an article. I love her meanings in her songs/videos!!

What's cool is that you're right she looks "normal" enough for the symbolism on the one level, but she's also dressed like a cigarette for another lol (I can't take credit for catching that though)

so you need to see the other part of Billie Eilish, which is live on stage performing Copycat. it's crazy how much charisma she has and this is coming from a 44 years old metalhead. i saw her live with my wife and kids last summer and the audience was jumping and moshing as if they were watching AC/DC. she's crazy talented and charismatic. oh! also, please react to Hostage.

She went to a party with her friends and they were drinking and juuling and she was upset because one girl was throwing up and all they did was just hold back her hair, like they didn’t ask how she was feeling or if she was okay. Billie got mad that her friends weren’t phased by this and wrote a song

Great reaction! I second what everyone else said. Billie also explained that this song is in a sense supposed to make you feel uncomfortable just like she deels when she is smothered by smoke. The last verse if this song she was actually crying because she had just lost a close feiend to an overdose 2 days before. Looking forward to more Billie!

There could be another reasoning behind the film grain quality to the video, but I just assumed it was for a 60's aesthetic to go along with her attire and the diner background noises on the track.

I don't know why, but I keep thinking about Bambi when she's layering her voice like that at the end of the song? Also like I saw someone else comment, I think you understood the meaning a lot better than most people. Knowing Billie, every sentence has a specific meaning but she's said that she likes hearing peoples interpretations of her songs so she won't say the exact meaning of everything. There's a video called "A snippet into Billie's mind - xanny" where she talks more about it though. :)

She is referring to her friends would drink and smoke, even to the point of a girl vomiting and everyone thinking it's normal. Also referring to friends that had died from from overdoses. She mentioned (in a descriptive video) that her drunk and drugged friends became "other people" when they were stoned and it really upset her, so she stopped hanging out with them. She doesn't smoke, drink or do drugs. She said that she wanted the chorus to sound how it felt to breath in second-hand smoke, and the video depicts her, literally, as being an ashtray, as her white clothing and brown hair are reminiscent of a cigarette.

Hi Geoff (Jeff?) ... having worked in film & tv production for 35+ years, including many music vids, I can't believe Billie's DOP would have used a film camera for this ... you will know that high-end digital cameras are now standard for all but the most hopelessly nostalgic producer/directors clinging to the past - even most cinema blockbusters are shot onto hard drives now. Which means that any 'filmic' blemishes you can see will be added in post-production for aesthetic reasons as another comment in this thread suggests. All I can see on my crappy laptop screen is that the whole of Billie's face seems to be in soft focus, which may again point to the addition of a filter in post. If anyone's interested in how the cigarette burns were most likely added without injuring Billie's skin, look at a 'how to' video at kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXesf5mDr7Cmo80 ...finally, neither you nor anyone here up to now has commented that, like in her 'When the Party's Over' video, Billie has opted for a single take throughout ... needs a good focus-puller to assist the camera operator!
