KEXP always has the best live versions. Mostly because if I remember correctly, Stu mixes the performances himself.

The effect Stu gets on his guitar is by sliding the tip of your fingernail on the E string up to the pickups and adding delay. Thats been a signature Gizzard sounds since like 2013, maybe even earlier!

not necessarily a fingertip, anything on high positions works, but yeah

Ithink this KEXP version is pretty similar to the album version, though i like amby and joey going ”EARTH FOR THE POOR” here. My favourite version is probably live in london ’19, when the crowd starts singing along to Lucas’ bass solo

Australia is just a bunch of british prisoners lol. Jokes aside, its just a fad they continued after the record. Like Stu and Joey wearing Dungarees (?) as a recall to Han-Tyumi on the cover of FFF. The glasses from The Silver Cord also originate there.

Ambrose does indeed play harmonica in that song, its very subtle but you can hear it in the last verse if you search for it, at first i thought the sounds were screams or moans rather or something else, but then i realized nobody was screaming and it sounded much like harmonica

Mars for the Rich and Superbug are the most mellow cuts off the record, being a lot more early Sabbath inspired whereas they said the other songs they took a lot of inspiration from Motorhead and other speed/thrash artists.

Mars for the Rich in particular has that sleazy rock-n-roll riffage akin to something that Fast Eddie of Motorhead would write, for sure.

When it comes to the prison jump suits, who knows. These guys are funny like that. They dress up as farmers and airline pilots some shows. I'm sure there's a reason, but who knows. F'ing love this band.

For the “feedback effect” stu gets its just a delay pedal pretty high up, and then just kinda sliding up the strings, super fun to do

Fun fact: this is the last studio record drummer Eric Moore is on before he leaves the band in 2020 to focus on flightless records.

I agree, the Holy Explorer is a beauty. Sadly, I kind of doubt we will get a Petro KEXP. Only because by the time they do another KEXP session, they will have released another 4 albums at least lol. I believe the prison jumpsuits are just an aesthetic thing for this album. This whole album tells a story: The first 4 tracks (Planet B, Mars For The Rich, Organ Farmer, and Superbug) are stand alone songs that just explain how fucked up earth has gotten. Tracks 5-9 (Venusian 1, Perihelion, Venusian 2, Self-Immolate, and Hell) tell one connected story (don't worry, you don't need to listen to them together lol) about people who can't afford to go to Mars. So to escape the awful Earth, they try to colonize Venus instead.

Stu's "signature move" is a boss dd3 with the feedback cranked, going into his fuzz. Some reverb helps too.

This was one of my first King Gizz songs. I'd say the studio version is a bit more "metal", but its pretty similar excluding the Gizzard Solo (which is what I call the section with Stu's Signature Sound) and more noticeable harmonica. Theres plenty of tutorials on KZbin for how to do the Stu thing (technically taken from John Dwyer of Thee Oh Sees). Charles Merriot has a pretty good one. I listened to PetroDragonic for the first time just last night, and I loved it! Though I admit I have a horrible memory, and I don't remember too much if the album itself. I'll remember more after wathcing your reactions to each track, probably. The Ratty VS Petro debate is pretty divided from what I've seen. Ratty's a more straight cut metal album, some thrash, some doom (but mainly thrash) but Petro is like a combo of Ratty's thrash stuff and Polygon (due to the progginess). Really depends on your tastes. Next uo is Organ Farmer, most peoples least favorite from what I've seen. Its not bad at all, really good actually, but its probably the weakest. Again, a good friend of mine who basically doesn't like any metal thinks this is a 10/10 album.

I don't think the album version has more bite, both versions are pretty similar. It's just that as you said, Mars for the Rich is more hard rock while other songs are in the album are metal. I like the variety. For the next one they have music video.

You should listen to Intraterrestrial by New Age Doom. It’s a microtonal prog rock song with jazz mixed in. The intro riff kind of sounds similar to King Gizzard.

The orange jumpsuits in my interpretation is kinda like their space suits considering the album, without giving too much away, is about going to space after we f*cked up the earth.

For Mars for the Rich I personally prefer ones like their Red Rocks or Bonnaroo sets where it sounds ‘bigger’. On studio/KEXP it doesn’t sound as devastating as their other live sets. Section at 6:30 rips so hard, I always imagine like Doom (2016) type hellscape carnage going on

I am not 100% sure about this; Australian prisoner uniforms are green, but in the United States the jumpsuits are orange. The orange jumpsuits MAY be related to the theme of feeling enslaved/imprisoned by the existing systems that contribute to the album's story, the annihilation of planet earth, and compare the United States working towards the destruction of the planet by manufacturing, specifically including the Penal System. They might also just have good taste in utilitarian uniforms, Cavs has worn a black jumpsuit during live events.

I think the live versions actually have more "bite" than the studio of ITRN - the empty-room drum sound on the album just seems to swallow the urgency of the songs, to me. Also, KEXP is the best FM radio station in existence and they have some cool-ass venues; I'd love to see you just turn on one of their radio shows that appeals to you and react to the songs as they play 😊

I thought the drummer suits were because Cavs father is a plumber he really loves his papa and something like that, but I'm not sure that's the reason now that it look more like a prison suit than a plumber suit lmao If you haven't decided yet which way to go next, I think Butterfly 3000 and Paper Maché Dream Balloon are good choices but I really recommend you doing Laminated Denim before, a 2 song album is a good way to transition... And Hypertension is probably one of their masterpieces (and personally my favorite song from them) 😄

The main riff always says Motörhead to me but I can kinda see Thin Lizzy. I'm definitely among those who prefer this to Petro haha. PS Checked out Terrasite and it is quality, and I've never really been massive into Cattle Decapitation. There's somethin about the cleans on "...and the World Will Go On Without You" that very, very vaguely reminds me of Eminem's Stan and I dunno why lmao

This is probably going to be a hot take, but I feel like if you’ve heard one or 2 tracks from ITRN you’ve heard them all. It’s a great album but the songs are all fairly similar. I def prefer Petro
