one of Gizz's best songs imo

I love this song. The repetition of the first half represents being alone in the middle of the ocean where everywhere you look looks exactly the same. Then paranoia and madness kicks in.

I find that "I know something's been lurking In the depths of murky water There are ripples and a'boats appearing Over there a separate ship" so hypnotically catchy. I could listen to it on loop.
@seanm241 Жыл бұрын
lol it really does sound like that if you read those words while listening to the song. However the lyrics are "There are ripples and bubbles appearing over by the sunken ship" I agree tho it's hypnotic

When it's time for Billabong Valley, I'd recommend the KEXP version. The vocals really shine on that recording.

This was the song that got me into king gizzard, as the first thing I saw of them was their behind the scenes video of the album and mostly this track, called "Peeling the Microtonal Banana" if you wanna give it a watch once you've done the album the whole way through. They did have two drummers for this album, and Eric is the other drummer, who left the band in order to manage their label, who as far as I know, they left. I don't know if there's much more story to that, but it is what it is.

I've found that this album is great to run to. Tracks do go into a zone like vibe but that works great when you are in your own head.

Yes this song is 2017 and they still had the 2nd drummer Eric Moore, who left in 2020. Sometimes they had no 2nd kick drum for Eric when they recorded in studio (better for sound). I got to watch Eric and Cavs (Michael Cavenaugh) drum together in 2019 - Awesome. Both very good, and perfectly synchronized!

A phenomenal live version to check out is open water live in Sydney 21. It shortens it exactly like you say and it's just cavs drumming so you can expect more out of the percussion side too.

I agree. Definitely the best version. Hearing the double kick live was something I will never forget

They had two drummers up to Infest the Rats’ Nest (2019) I believe.

Your "good, not great" reaction to this song is pretty much the whole fanbases reaction to most of their stuff upon hearing it for the first time so you really shouldn't be worried about giving those thoughts. We've all been there, dude. It's actually impressive that you seem to genuinely like most of their stuff straight away. It probably means you will become a raving fanatic by the time you get to our level of experience with them haha. The next song Sleep Drifter is probably top 5 gizz btw.

The repetition on the first half its for narrative reasons, it represents the feeling of going into open water all looking the same

While this is one of my absolute favorite tracks I do agree on the middle part, but as someone whose listened to it 100 times it feels more like I’m just anticipating the absurdly good last half. I think keeping the middle section is fine but with some super minor tweaks like changing up the fills or teasing a build up in there would be perfect. Still top 5 for me regardless.

Yes they had two drummers at this time. Also highly recommend having lyrics brought up with King Gizz. The music is entrancing but the lyrics slap you in the face at times

Eric Moore was the 2nd drummer. He’s been running flightless records since the band parted ways with him and the label they made. Eventually they created KGLW and release everything themselves.

I think a lot of the zone-out/drone sound on this album comes from the microtonal tuning they used. I think they were just learning how to write songs in this tuning, so a lot of times they just jam on one note and add flourishes here and there. The later microtonal albums (KG and LW) have more traditional western melodies while also using the microtonal tuning, for better or worse. Some people prefer the later albums with their more “song-sounding” songs, while other people prefer the repetitive droning style songs from Microtonal Banana. Developing your own personal opinions about the rankings of the 3 microtonal albums is a big part of becoming a King Gizzard fan lol
@danalvarez6498 Жыл бұрын
On one hand, I agree. This song could’ve been one verse shorter and it would be just as good. On the other hand, sometimes you just gotta embrace the drone, brother.

I get a lot more out of the other 2 microtonal albums, KG and LW. A couple of my favorite from their whole discog are on those (if not now and intrasport to name a couple)
@pizzarella_yt Жыл бұрын
They did have 2 drummers at this point, but Eric really didn't play on the albums. Rattlesnake, Open Water and the penultimate track Nuclear Fusion are the only tracks where Eric plays in the studio version. The other songs sound like 2 drummers, but it's just Cavs playing 2 drum parts. And there is a brand that makes microtonal guitars based on the white one Cookie used on this album, but I forgot which one.
@thisbubblygoodness7611 Жыл бұрын
I still laugh at how Eric is credited for doing 'nothing' on the Paper Mache Dream Balloon Album, its just too funny he always felt like an extra band member to me, but damn he was funny and a cool addition to the band, I just hope they're still on good terms with each other
@pizzarella_yt Жыл бұрын
@@thisbubblygoodness7611 That was really funny. Also funny that he got his kick drum privileges taken away. I wouldn't assume there's anything between eric and the band, they still follow eachother on Instagram, but you never know.

You can buy a microtonal strat or tele neck from tp guitars for around 500$, and just fit it on any old POS strat or squire you have lying around...
@toeMaster42069 Жыл бұрын
this song is a good example of my overall thoughts about this album vs KG/LW; it's not that i dislike this song, but a huge part of the appeal is mostly "check it out, microtonal stuff!" whereas KGLW has the writing and intricacies right up there with their very best stuff. FMB feels like theyre learning how to use microtones, while KGLW feel like full, legit as hell albums that just happen to be microtonal my controversial opinion is that the biggest thing FMB has going for it is the fact that it was the first venture into this sort of thing--- KGLW are just miles ahead in every other regard

the first 3 songs are abit repetitive, as the album goes it feels like they song writing gets more creative, rattlesnake and open water are okay songs but theyre 100% way better live

I would actually say Hot Water is their most repetitive song, although their early stuff (first 2 albums) I find very repetitive. This may be blasphemous to other Gizz fans, but I'm not a fan of their first 2 albums.
