It's incredible, as soon as the song starts you are immediately transported inside the story he is telling. I feel bad for anyone who doesn't know Italian and can't appreciate the sublime poetry of Fabrizio De Andrè. For all the non-italian readers: I like to think that La Guerra di Piero is kind of the prequel of Danny Boy. The two songs convey a very similar feeling, and both Piero and Danny have a loved one waiting for them to come back home. The woman waiting for Danny (and giving us the lyrics of the song) could very well give voice to the same feelings and thoughts as Ninetta, so one song is on the soldier's point of view while the other is on the woman's

Mina sang a song of Fabrizio: "La Canzone di Marinella" Mina, at that times (early '70s) was a huge popstar in Italy an Fabrizio at that time quite confidential. It was his first popular succès. You should listen. It' s like a tragic and romantic tale. But, in fact, De André was inspired by a newspaper article about a young prostitute found dead in a river, probably killed by a perv or by his pimp. Fabrizio with a beautiful song try to repare the dark and horror that happened to that unlucky soul... You can find an interwiew (in Italian, sorry) of Fabrizio that explain the story of the song. it's so cool to see others appreciate italian songs like de andrè's, the song is about a prostitute that give love to all she can, but the "comari" the gossip and sour wives that can't endure their husband caring about another lady; The base concept of De Andrè is to give space to the last people, the forgotten ones, those who are always treated badly without trying to understand them like a poor boy or guy that is a robber to put food on the table and also the ladys that choose to work in prostitution who otherwise would not know how to get money or they can't; also the "song of Marinella" is the story of a prostitute who was found lifeless on the edge of a river and who talks very little about it, so he wanted to remember what happened

Man, i really love your work but when you listen to De André... It's more about the text than the music, and it's really difficult to translate 'cause even the choice of words in italian is sophisticated: he goes for meaning and musicality, both of them. To write something with the wording (and poetry) that he achieved Is something that would incredibly difficult even for an italian speaker. It's High poetry deeply rooted in social colture.. it's well ahead of times in showing todays hipocrisy and so much more. Moreover, Don't be fooled by how music feels. He plays with It. Some songs might sound "Happy" but they are totally sad. Anyway, enjoy It as much as you can. (And i Hope my english makes Sense)

De Andre’s songs are all about the lyrics, although he masters the melody too. I appreciate that non Italian speakers are interested in listening Italian music, kudos to you. However, at least some basic knowledge of the language would help to grasp the real meaning of the song, this would make you fall in love with all his songs. Fabrizio was such an humble, sensible person yet he is a genius singer songwriter. His lyrics are pure poetry.

Just wanted to say some things. I'll say them one at the time in italia the word "cagna", does mean b#tch, but only with the meaning of female dog. it's not often used as an insult like in English. The author calles the jilted wives "cagnette" (little b#tches) just for the purpose of making ane analogy with a dog who is angry because you stole his bone him. I think if the song had been written in english the author would have saied "the dogs she stole a bone from". The song is not about people taking advabtage on her, but it's about jilted wives being angry at her.

In realtà "bitch" è proprio la traduzione più adatta perché anche in inglese vuol dire sia "stronza" che "cagna" nel senso letterale ovvero un cane femmina. ;)

La cnazone dice addirittura "Cagnette", col diminuitivo. Anche se a volte in italiano puoi usare la parola cagna come offesa "quella dona è una cagna" invece col diminuitivo non fa pensare affatto a un'offesa. Basta guardare la reazione che ha lui quendo legge la parola b@tches per capire cosa intendo. Invece il termine "cagnette" fa quasi tenerezza.

This is an amazing song ! De Andrè was just one of the best italian songwriters, basically he was our italian Bob Dylan, into his own style btw. He told whole stories in his songs. He also happened to play with other great musicians, like for example PFM.
