Recently I've begun to wonder why Nintendo never made a new 2D Mario platformer for the GBA. They only ported the All-Star versions of 2, 3, and World, and 1 was the NES Classic version. It's kind of weird, no?
@mattia10262 жыл бұрын
I guess they were focusing most of their resources on the gamecube as it desperately needed their full support, while the gba had all the third parties on its side and basically no competition (wonderswan in Japan was on its last legs and neo geo pocket color was done for too). Also, at that time most developers were still on "3D fever", wherein 2d titles were considered somewhat lesser title compared to full 3d poligon heavy titles.

Not a lot of shoot ’em ups for sure, but two more I would recommend are: 1) Gradius Galaxies (or Gradius Advance, or Gradius Generation, each region has a different name) is a good entry in the series, and possibly one of the, if not the best shooter of the system; 2) Invader is a pretty good shmup too, which would really benefit from a turbo fire function though (I hope the Analogue Pocket will support that in the future). Love the GBA platform. I used to work at a game store a while ago when the 3DS was in its prime. We had a trade come through where the owner was trying to trade in some GBA games. Unfortunately we didn't take GBA at the time, so the owner just left them behind because they had no desire to take them back with them. It was store policy to trash games we couldn't take as trade-in, which my supervisor did. I dug them out of the trash bin because one of the titles was Metroid: Zero Mission, I couldn't stand to see that game be thrown in the trash. I begged my store manager to let me at least keep Metroid, they caved in and let me take it home. It will forever be cherished in my collection as being saved from the trash.

Golden Sun was my first ever Game Boy Advance game and one of my first ever video games owned, if not the first ever. We were in a shop called Cash Converters or one of the shops with similar names and business offerings and we were looking at the second hand games. I believe my Mother wanted to buy me a game, as me and my brother had each been given a Game Boy Advance, as our first ever console, so we continually trawled shops looking for cheap games. The budget may have been ten pounds and under. In one shop, Gamestation, we saw "Atlantis" for the Game Boy Advance, perhaps priced five pounds. My Mother queued to ask for it to be removed from the cabinet and I waited nervously, staring at what was apparently to be my first ever game and having no idea how it would play. It transpired at some point that a man had got ahead, with my Mother feeling confused and the man explaining that he went for it as it was the cheapest one there, hence my first game ending up being Golden Sun instead. I had no idea what to expect from Golden Sun but one or two brothers relayed that they had heard "good things" about it. There were multiple games within budget, I believe. But one or two brothers dropped hints about Golden Sun and so I nervously attached myself to it. Lo and behold it changed my life. I do not know how Atlantis would have played and it could be a great game in its own right. But Golden Sun was just the game I needed. It quickly became apparent that it was an RPG with a deep and mysterious story and while being bullied at school and becoming increasingly lonelier I threw myself deeper and deeper into the world of Golden Sun. It had a profound impact on my life and helped me channel my ideas and creativiry while school neglected them. It was a form of emotional support, as well as encouraging me to create Golden Sun Board games with real raw materials and Golden Sun trading card games. All of this due to a seemingly subtle change...from Atlantis to Golden Sun. I used to listen to the start up music on repeat, again and again and again to feel that surge of hope and optimism. I thank Camelot wholeheartedly for creating such a wondrous masterpiece and the person whom sold their copy of Golden Sun to Cash Converters, ultimately allowing it to come into my possession. There are different games for different people and moments. I will buy Atlantis some day so I can appreciate what almost was all those years ago. But I recommend looking to see whether or not Golden Sun can be the adventure your heart is longing for. Later on, I was given a GAME voucher, maybe a year or so later. I think the voucher was worth five pounds or maybe ten pounds. We had very little money so I remember my Mother's disappointment realising that the voucher alone may not be enough to buy a game and so she would have to put money toward it. The game I ended up getting with the voucher was Blackthorne. I believe before that event I bought/was gifted Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a Game Boy Colour Game. It went something like: Golden Sun, first ever Game Boy Advance game and first game fullstop. Buffy, first Game Boy Colour Game and second game overall. Blackthorne: second Game Boy Advance game and third gmae overall.

So I read your full comment. I love hearing stories like that. I had a different experience with Golden Sun. I can't remember what age I was, but I visited my cousin, and he was playing Golden Sun. I couldn't stop watching him play over the shoulder, you know? I asked him if I could borrow it/trade, but he said he borrowed it from someone else. That's the last I saw of that game. Fast forward to today, I have an Ambernic SP, (a faithful GBA SP clone emulator) and playing games I missed out on, like Golden Sun. I gotta say, the visuals in Golden Sun is what gripped my attention. I'm playing the Mother/Earthbound trilogy on my Ambernic SP. I can't believe how much I've been missing out... I haven't finish the first game (NES) I'm just taking my sweet time, cause it's so interesting and fun, and memorable to me. It's interesting. I'm grown up, but I'm still able to find and play "new games" that I'm excited to play. This Never happens with modern games. (microtransaction/mandatory online/the "for modern audience" nonsense...) I used to frequent a GameTek. Next to a "social doctor" that helped me a lot growing up. In the GameTek, they used to let people try out any games before buying. I loved going there. Got a lot of memorable games there. I think that's where I got Ocarina of Time, and maybe Majora's Mask. Anyway, good times going there after a "therapy" session. My favourite GBA series, is Mega Man Battle Network. But, back in school, I remember Everyone, was playing pokemon, and pogs.. 😅 Including myself of course. I skipped a class just to play with other kids. I miss the golden age of gaming. Where you didn't have to spend a cent, on dlc, microtransactions, online membership fees, and didn't have that awful "for modern audience" narrative, the uglification of characters... I just don't play modern games. I stick to the classics. ♥ Sorry for any typos I might have

@@CapnRetro Thank you so much for your message, the time you took to write it and the thought you put into it. Thank you for reading mine. Hearing people's stories really is an informative and exciting experience; games tell stories about the player as much as they do about the characters within the games. I know what you mean about the curiosity compelling you to watch someone play; it was the same with television games, like my brothers playing on the N64, Gamecube and Playstation 2; I kept dreaming of the days I would be allowed to play and making mental notes to purchase the games when an adult and with the money to do so (Which was perhaps an exercise in innocence as some of those games of course increased in price rather decreased.). I had not heard of the Ambernic SP until now. The visuals in Golden Sun are absolutely beautiful, aren't they? And the music, right from the title screen...the option select screen, the battle music... The music can be dynamic and fast, slow and sorrowful... Everytime I see artwork for Golden Sun I am so impressed and warmed by the grace of the drawings and the appropriate sense of epicness that is felt. I finally managed to purchase a boxed edition of one of the Japanese Golden Sun games and can not wait to purchase the other. I really recommend looking out for copies, especially as you appreciate the artwork too. I believe I played a ROM of Earthbound when I was a child and that was my only experience with the franchise. It is a series I need to get into and I am really glad you are enjoying it. Absolutely, take your time and enjoy the experience in your own time and way. If a fourth Golden Sun game were released that would be my inclination. I want to absorb the world and characters all over again and take time to understand their new journey and motivations. Ah, I can not stand microstransactions either. They are a bane. I enjoyed the days of buying a game and that was the only fee you paid. You paid for a full game and received a full game. Also, it creates an issue with second hand games. So many games now have online features or mostly online features or only online features. In the severest cases it means you can purchase a disc and have access to very little gameplay when the servers are taken offline, unless unofficial servers are created. And Pokemon games even suffer from this with events like raids and distributions. I purchased a new Pokemon game ages ago but by the time I can afford to buy a Switch so many events will have passed and it might be that I can only use the servers for a couple of years before they are switched off. I wish more was done to guarantee that backup options were available, maybe releasing content hidden within a game once servers are shut or creating more universal servers so that when one console goes offline you can still enjoy online play in some way, even if limited. I am really glad that you still find enjoyment in games. It is such a beautiful thing to be able to do, to have that spark still and to recognise the creative sparks in what other people create. I have such fondness for old games, from Golden Sun to Donkey Kong 64 to many, many others. Basically every game on the N64 seemed to be great. But I have discovered some new games that have attracted me, such as those with gameplay that differs to the usual set up. Such as Spirit of the North, which I have on Steam and will properly play when I have storage space. Stray, I do not own but I recommend checking out videos if you are interested in animalistic games. I have one of the Little Nightmares games for the Switch which I look forward to playing in the future. I like that it is a little different to the usual gameplay, the usual shooting, the usual action games... I am really glad to hear that gaming has had such a positive experience for you; I can relate entirely to what you say. It helped me through so many challenges and it really can feel like therapy. I feel I could write an entire autobiography just about how Golden Sun kept me going through life's traumas! It is so important to have these creative expressions; for myself, maybe it is the same for you too, I think the charm comes through in the duality; On the one hand they can give such hope, such breathless imagining of a life away from your own, at least psychologically speaking, helping to show you another mindset. And on the other hand, they do not dismissive suffering. Games like Golden Sun are all about loss and so can connect with characters, resonate, identify, even imagine how we would handle a character's struggles just how therapists guide us to consider how we have behaved or would behave. I have not played Mega Man in ages but that is another one I need to explore again. I know that there are so many Mega Man games. I remember Pogs! My brother had loads and the dinner table was often covered in pogs that had flown everywhere. I actually have a Dragon Ball Z pog somewhere. Thank you for everything you wrote and for taking the time to reach out and share! I really appreciate you doing so.

@@BarryVP12 One of the reasons I don't like online options in offline games, as you said, is it dies when it ages. What are you left with, after it dies? Some half working game, or something that doesn't really work. Another reason I don't play online, is that I'm not competitive. Growing up I've seen things, been through stuff.. If you know what I mean, I'm done. Now I put my focus and attention in just going with the flow. Anyway, I also just prefer to progress you know? Not have someone ruin the experience by destroying everything you make, spawn kill, spoilers, screaming... I play my games like I read books. At my own pace. Here's a story. When I was little, my cousin and I always played Champions of Norrath 1&2. Every time we met, we'd play split screen. He's the only one I vibe with when going with the flow of a game, you know? Anyway, so many good memories with that game. I forgot who it was with, but at one point I even used a multitap, for additional players. Next to games like Destroy all Humans, and Dog's Life 😅 Champions of Norrath is my favourite PS2 game(s). Some time, years later, I met with a distant cousin. We got along, but in the end, I lent him Champions of Norrath 1, he lent it to the son of his mother's boyfriend, and he lost it. Ffs man. 😒 He did offer to repay me, but I refused. It's difficult for me to accept generosity from others. Past trauma... Anyway, yesterday I started emulating it. I waited way too long to emulate it. I got emotional. Some of the few happy memories I have of my past, is with my father and I playing Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask (let me know if you wanna hear that story) and my cousin, playing Champions.. I still gave the game and manual of the sequel, but I wanted to get the manual of the sequel. I found one on ebay. I think my father wants to buy it for me after we talked on the phone, but I told him I'd pay for it. Yeah, many have that one game they grew up with, that affected them greatly. Their own experience... But I just wish I had a close friend. I just could never open up, or speak to anyone after that experience I had. Just a few years ago I started speaking, and it feels nice, when speaking with good people. Farley recently I got married to the woman who saved my life. We met online. Worked for us. She flew from the other side of the planet, just to be with me. It's still hard to believe. She's so beautiful Inside and out. Especially her kindness. Back to it 😅 Sorry about that I'm still learning to communicate properly, after not speaking for so many years. Did you or your brother also played pogs for keeps at school? That's how it was in my school. N64, GameCube, and PS2. Tell me your favourite game(s) experiences, is you would. I appreciate long comments. Gamers just enjoying a conversation. I appreciate it 🙏

For the wrapped box issue you can use an air humidifire. Dry air is causing it. Also making a little hole in the wrap may be needed. That and airing them once in a while literally outside.

You should take the shrink off if you feel like it might be damaging the box. Tightening shrink wrap is a common issue with vinyl. I have found stacks of shrink wrapped records that were all ruined by the tightening of the plastic. Remove the shrink wrap! Sealed and ruined is nothing compared to near mint open and working

Love the GBA. Awesome collection. I got one at launch and used to take it to school. Tony Hawk 2 was a launch game and was really impressive on that hardware.

Nothing like the good ol GBA! We know you’re not a Pokémon fan but that boxed copy of LeafGreen is probably one of the more expensive GBA game’s you own. Keep that in mind if you ever need to sell/trade it for other GBA game’s you would enjoy more.
@MetalJesusRocks2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was surprised to see how much that is going for these days! I might trade that at some point for other games I would actually play.

You're missing all the extremely overly expensive several hundred dollar games... One Piece, Dragon Ball Advance, Double Dragon, Pinky & the Brain, Pocky & Rocky & Becky, Alien Hominid, Demi Kids Light & Dark, Ninja Five-O...

What's the name of the racing game shown at 5:13 ? It'd be great if you added the game names in captions when showing all these game clips; surely part of the point of this video is to show us games we're not familiar with?
