Buzz is not mad about anything except the loss of a friend. Its like saying Id give everything I have for one more day spent with a lost loved one. He would rather have Kurt alive then all the success that they all had because of Nirvana. Dont blow anything out of proportion. If you asked him if your dress made you look fat, and it did (aside from your fat), he would tell you -YES. Thats a real friend.

his anger reminds me of John Lydon's anger over people romanticizing Sid and his drug addiction. Buzz and Dale, would much rather have their friend back, and not deal with the "wounded junkie" bullshit, which is mostly made up of girls who sincerely believe that they could have "fixed" Kurt.

im glad that you were able to come in here and let everyone know what he was thinking and how he felt at the time, how could we ever kno- oh wait, you dont know shit. they weren't friends, dale played on some of nirvanas early stuff and kurt acted as a roadie for the melvins and buzz was in a band with him for a month or so. Same thing happened with "earth", any person who has ever interacted with kurt in any way is automatically listed as "being best friends", there are a ton of interviews where he says the same thing. Dylan carlson was an associate yet when kurt died everyone came out of the woodwork to talk about them like they were inseperable and hung out every day and were just the best of friends, which wasn't the case at all. He was a drug addict, he died of a drug overdose, there was never some conspiracy or anything like that. He liked getting high and he used too much, shit happens, it would have happened no matter who he hung out or associated himself with.

Butch's producing and the subsequent mastering of Nevermind was what had made it palpable for the masses. That coupled with Kurt's image was the perfect combo for success and exactly what popular music needed at the end of the hair band and synth pop days. I think what makes Roger bitter about it all is that if it never happened then his good friend would still be alive today and they'd be playing (real) venues together to this day. In much the same manner the Melvins are doing it today, intimate settings with good, loyal fans. The fan base that was and would still be there regardless of Nirvana's success. I don't think his bitterness is a product of jealousy at all, more a reflection of how things could have been. I think that at any time over the past 20 years that if the Melvins wanted to produce a chart-topper, by putting aside their own artistic licenses, that they could do it and a big label would pick it up and put it out there. They'd be playing big arenas and opening for Foo Fighters and such. They have the experience, knowledge, connections and talent to do so. That is just not who the Melvins are or ever will be. Roger wants millions to like his music, but that doesn't mean he wants to make music with the sole intent of having millions like it, there's a difference.

Agile is one of those brands offering high quality at a reasonable rate. the high prices of Gibson and other well know brands has a lot to do with their reputation. heritage. history. exclusivity. that's not in any way taking away from the quality or sound of these instruments. just know if you want that particular brand, it comes with a high price tag. todays market is flooded with great gear and if you're on a tight budget you can still get great quality guitars as long as you're willing to take a chance and are not set on having that premium name on the headstock.

Kurt took Nirvana in a totally different direction musically then the Melvins. He believed in writing music based on melody and lyrical appeal as to the Melvins are far more experimental then Nirvana ever had the chance to be. The question to ask is where would Nirvana be musically if they would have had a career like the Melvins. Buzz was never afraid to do exactly what he wanted and that freedom has allowed him to become one of the most influential artist today. Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Doesn't matter, what does is the friendship that allowed both bands to flourish in the end, and for the record the Melvins were well established in the underground scene when Kurt was just starting to mold Nirvana.

Nirvana, Melvins, Mudhoney, three of the best bands of all time, not just to come out of the 80's and 90's. Personally I think all three should've achieved the same level of success, but unfortunately that's not how the music industry works. They don't just hand out popularity, it's specifically chosen. Like Buzz said, the music was there, the image wasn't. The music is secondary for the most part, being surpassed mostly by image, which The Melvins didn't fit. Kurt had the music and the image, which is why the music industry creamed their pants over him, especially with the release of Nevermind. Of the three Nirvana is my favorite but not because of Kurt, just because the sound is more pleasing to me, especially Insesticide and In Utero.

So then think about this...........you just taught this guy how to play and he is even making music like you and all of a sudden HE blows up, gets famous because he was "more attractive" and The Melvins get left underground......... How do you think that Buzzo and Dale Crover would react? They would have to be a little fucking pissed don't you think?

I'm not so sure about that because he really was an ambivalent character. There's a interview with his ex Tracy, where she says "he wanted to get his band going". Combine that with the song structures in Nevermind. He first wanted to call that album " Verse Chorus Verse" because he wrote catchy beatles-like songs. I personally think he imagined, deep down, how'd it be like to be a John Lennon type of figure in the mainstream but when he ultimately got there, he couldn't handle the hype and glorification. Ambivalence is pretty nasty.

Houdini is the only Melvins record I listen to, and I've bought several. Never even knew Kurt co-produced it. Melvins are great when they try but release a lot of random rubbish. I guess Buzzo owes a lot more to Kurt than he might think. Kurt obviously got them focused on writing great tunes rather than just writing as many records as possible.

FandangleTechery Kurt never got them to writing great tunes. Melvins have been kicking it out since 1983. They haven't changed to appeal to anyone in any way. Of course they owe a lot, more dale cover because he gets royalties from incesticide. Who knows if Kurt would have been who he was if buzz didn't take him to his first punk show, been in fecal matter, opened shows for one another, influenced his own work and work ethic, got them hooked up with Dave grohl. It's a sad situation in the end

Using that same logic, then every Nirvana song must be solid gold, right? Please. Nirvana had it's share of garbage songs. Different strokes.

Greg Pasquier those that made it in the albums were solid gold.

Yeah. Always thought most of their stuff is unlistenable but Houdini is awesome. I don't think it was a coincidence.

Bleach sold 30k records before Nirvana went big. So if it's because he had the wounded junkie look, why did Bleach sell more than any of your records before Houdini? Love the Melvins, but that's a bs statement. Also, Smells like teens spirit was a song that kept getting requested and blew up. After that they tried selling an image for the rest of the bands
@thatgameofthronesguy33113 жыл бұрын
Totally agree! Teen spirit was requested so much the radio and mtv had to put it in heavy rotation. Kurt's look might've helped Nirvana become bigger but the music was the main reason

Sounds to me like someone is a little bit jealous and thinks he's better than nirvana and Kurt and he acts like if he was good looking they would have done better ... Well no I think they still would have owned
@utero51927 жыл бұрын
with all due respect, you can perceive a slight feeling of jealousy towards Kurt's musical success (his music changed everything), any artists has at least some load of ego and I'm 100% sure Buzz is no exception. Buzz is a great musician yet miles away behind Kurt's talent
@JasonPizzolato5 жыл бұрын
MELVINS brought the heavy. NIRVANA brought the pop. Naturally, the bubble-gum is going to sell better to the masses. Pretty sure King Buzzo realizes this. lol @ "Miles away behind Kurt's talent.". :))) You don't even believe that, really. At least you say Buzz is a great musician, though. Credit where credit is due for recognizing. Cheers.

I always feel a sense of bitterness when he talks about Kurt, and I don't really understand it. Like they were supposedly friends and he fucking helped produce their record and yet he still talks down about him being a junkie? I just don't remember ever seeing Kurt say anywhere that Buzz was this fat mountain guy, so why would he call Kurt a skinny junkie? I love Melvins and all of their music, but I've seen too many instances of Buzz talking badly about Kurt, and it just isn't fair or acceptable to trash talk someone who is dead, especially someone who supported you and your band so openly. I seriously doubt Melvins would have been as successful in the nineties if people like Kurt hadn't always listed them as influences. There's just something really disgusting about disrespecting the dead, especially the ones who cared about you.

I don't think he's bitter at Kurt Cobain. He's just saying that he sold and marketed that image of the good looking druggies that play heavy music and he's bitter/pissed at the people who loved him for that more than his music. Like how these soccer mom and pretentious poser-yuppies listening to his shit only after he became famous and they would not even bat an eyes for him if he was just a regular guys playing underground music.. Than maybe he would still be alive today, but maybe not has much famous. I hate also the hypocrisy of all those poser and fake people. That just pretend so they can fit in. Or those asshole journalist that pretend they know more about your own music than you do.
@oneeyedjack111510 жыл бұрын
ThePsycm he may have a very good point there, but still it feels like there's a slight hint of envy beyond it. kurt didn't do drugs or made music or had the posture he had so that he could be famous and marketable, things just turned out to be that way, and nirvana's music isn't that cheap people (including buzz) tend to present it nowadays. I mean, the fact some fake losers declared themselves as nirvana fans doesn't affect the essence of nirvana
@daydreamer92ify10 жыл бұрын
I agree with both of you really. I can see why Buzz felt that Kurt and Nirvana sold out, but if Nirvana sold out so did Sonic Youth, they were on the SAME MAJOR LABEL and Sonic Youth has never gotten shit on for selling out. I think it's clear that Kurt never meant to get so famous so fast. Clearly he didn't enjoy it, there are so many interviews with people who were around him that say he resented it, and he even wrote about it in his suicide note. He felt like he was punching in a time clock when he walked on stage by that point, he was just really burnt out and the band even put out a really extreme album with In Utero and it only made them more famous. Maybe Buzz is resentful to the series of events that led Kurt to be so bad off and a drug abuser, who knows. I'm glad other people have insight into the story though.
@oneeyedjack111510 жыл бұрын
daydreamer92ify agreed A-Z because I was a Melvins fan even before Nirvana went big (and neither than felt totally comfortable with buzzo's cocky attitude) and Melvins arguably paved the road for what's gonna happen with Nirvana and the rest of the Seattle scene, but I wonder what if Buzz had that withered skinny popular look Kurt had, what if he was in kurt's shoes at the time, of course playing Melvins' stuff, where Melvins would have been, would they be able to change the course of music (no matter if that being regarded in a positive or negative way), would anyone give a shit about them more than they do now?
@daydreamer92ify10 жыл бұрын
Vojislavka Zivkovic I really don't think so. Part of the reason Nirvana was so profoundly amazing and popular was the way kurt wrote and the way he sang, he had a great rock scream that was uniquely his, buzz doesn't have that type of emotional and inflection in his throat, you know? Drone is never going to reach as many people as Nirvana's albums did, there is something less human and desperate about it.
