Remember... This band did NOT release a video until 'One' was released off their 4th album. We didn't have all these media platforms back then ... It was video(MTV), radio(which, believe it or not, NEVER EVER EVER EVER played Metallica) and word of mouth. These dudes fought in the trenches ... Touring and converting the masses. That's why they didn't break big.... Bigger... Before. Back then you earned your fanbase or sold your soul to the industry. They took the road less traveled... And paved the way for the many. 🤘... I suggest "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" from this same album.

The movie Old School had this song MOP when they were grabbing their pledges for a fraternity. It was hilarious 😂 !! Metallica is in their own lane! I've been a fan since 81' im 2 yrs younger than the boys, and I was 21 when Master of Puppets dropped!! It was crazy! No gimmicks or wild clothing and crap just pure Metal, thrash and lyrics that were insane! My favorite band!♥️ Been lucky to see them many times throughout 80's to present! Better live!! 🎼🤘🎸🔥🔥

Others have mentioned it, but the structure of the song was imitating the cycle of drug addiction. It starts out fast and frantic...the need for a fix, then it slows and mellows as the drug takes effect. It doesn't last long, and then the song gets even more frantic as the need for drugs becomes even stronger. Iron Maiden was one of the early pioneers of metal. Metallica took that and made it more aggressive.
@garydpsu
@garydpsu Жыл бұрын
The structure of the song is also intentionally related to the drug. The beginning faster pace is meant to represent feining searchin thinkin incessantly about getting high. The immaculate slow 2nd part solo is THE high and the feeling the user gets. and the end picks up again to represent the come down/regret gotta do it all over again constant.

I really liked your reaction man, its so cool to see someone who dont know this song, hearing it for the first time. Read the lyics and you will understand the song and what its about. They are talking about how drugs control your life and become your master, and you will do whatever it takes to get more and more to get high. Plus its also saying that even though you maybe enjoying at first, and it might be fun, but eventually its actually laughing at you, cause its killing you at the same timesame time.

Hey, what's up? First, thank you very much for the reaction, it was great. I recommend you do a reaction to *Fade to black* (My favorite Metallica song), it's a softer song, but I know you'll love it. I would also recommend *Enter Sandman* and *Sad but true*. I think you'd like it because of the groove it has. In relation to the differences with Iron Maiden, Maiden is a band that emerged first and is part of the New wave of British heavy metal, which, in fact, influenced Metallica. Maiden lyrically deals with more historical, existential and even poetic themes. Metallica has lyrics more focused on personal struggles, the war is also recurring and often criticizes society. Musically, Iron Maiden focuses much more on the melodic, Bruce's singing is more operatic, so to speak, and in general, the guitars are less distorted and the galloping bass is more constant. It is also much more characteristic of Maiden to have "dueling" guitars in the solos. Metallica is more direct, James' voice is more raspy (especially at the beginning), and since the 90s it's more groovy. The solos are generally (with some exceptions) done by Kirk and the drums are dominated by double bass. Anyway, I hope I've been helpful. Greetings from Colombia.

You asked "why did it take till their third album to get super popular?' The same reason you never heard of any of the other bands mentioned (Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer). These bands didn't have radio play. There was no internet or streaming music. You either heard what was on the internet, or you got exposed to them by your cousin or older brother. Metal does not play well on radio - because most people tune in to hear that standard "corporate rock" sound - and that's what keeps the money coming in from the station's sponsors. Some were lucky enough to live in areas that had underground stations that played stuff never heard on other stations. Thats the only way these bands got airplay. Metallica went on a HUGE tour in 87 called the Monsters of Rock - this was on the heels of Master of Puppets album. They opened for Scorpions and Van Halen (the headliner). That tour is greatly responsible for thrusting them into the headlights for many people where went to this show for long term popular bands like Scorps and VH, and finally heard Metallica for the first time. I first heard them in 87 - i was at the community teen center on the military base I grew up on - the school's proverbial drop-out loser stoner dude put the Puppets cassette on the music sound system and the first song that came on was Sanitarium from that album. I was instantly hooked. I had never heard or listened to metal before that. I became a metal head overnight! Begged my mom for that album for Christmas. I got it, and the next year got And Justice For All. I've since seen them live over 30 times in my life.

One of the big reasons why Heavy/Thrash Metal didn't get airplay back then was, not only were the early-mid 80's owned by commercially-friendly, "MTV ready" New Wave and Europop bands, but also, thanks in part to certain album imagery, Heavy Metal was considered "demonic" music, and was widely vilified in the press and other mediums. This "satanic panic" led by moral majority crusaders like Tipper Gore made it hard, if not impossible, for these bands to break through into the mainstream. It wasn't until the late 80's that this started to change.

Iron Maiden is a British Heavy Metal band that got its start in the late-1970s, and were contemporaries with Def Leppard and Motörhead. Iron Maiden has been described as a “thinking man’s” Heavy Metal band, because of the various subjects and viewpoints displayed in their songwriting. They also had to play fast, to compete in the UK with the Punk Rock music scene there at the time. Metallica incorporated Classical music influences into their arrangements of their songs and instrumentals, which made them unique in Heavy Metal music. Bassist Cliff Burton had taken a college course in Classical Music Theory and Composition, and he made it an emphasis to incorporate what he learned into the band’s songwriting process. Cliff Burton was killed in a tour bus accident in Sweden in September, 1986, when the bus hit an icy patch on the road, slid sideways, and flipped onto its side. Burton was ejected from a top bunk bed along the side window, then the bus landed on top of him. Cliff Burton was 24 years old.

A Reason why they weren't broadly accepted until the fourth album is that metal had huge amount of people pushing back against the genre even existing. You can hear all the older stuff on any classic rock station now, but hardly any radio would even touch it until like the 90s.

It was called headbanging, metal heads in the '80's called ourselves headbangers, Metallica had a motto: "Bang that head that doesn't bang!" It's a great album, arguably their very best, a true masterpiece and pinnacle for the band; James is the king of rhythm guitar downpicking, it's a tricky technique to play fast for an entire song, gives distorted guitar chords that "chunky" feel and tone, that and palm-muting at the bridge, Metallica championed that metal tone
@SdMbL1
@SdMbL1 Жыл бұрын
Down picking on a guitar is used a lot in metal. James Hetfield is a master of it. When you upstroke after a down stroke it can have a different tone on the string or strings you are playing. Down picking consistently gives you the same tone every time if done correctly and can make your playing a lot faster and more consistent strokes.
@carlgibson285
@carlgibson285 Жыл бұрын
You understood downpicking perfectly. It's a difficult technique to perfect, but James Hetfield is a master at it (what makes it even more impressive is that he's singing at the same time). Tbh when Metallica are playing live, they rely more on James than they do on Lars (the drummer) when it comes to keeping the beat - James is like a human metronome. If you want peak Metallica when it comes to composition, try anything off of Master Of Puppets or And Justice For All. Ride The Lightning is also a great album, but the compositions are less complex than the other two albums I mentioned.

I just saw a clip with my fellow James describing his down-pick only technique is because he, and I quote ‘Plays the guitar like he’s playing the drums. He smashes the strings with the pick like when he’s holding a drumstick

Iron Maiden and Metallica are under the same tree of "metal". They both had their heyday in the 80s. Both happen to be my two favorite bands all time. The similarity kinda ends there. Metallica is "thrash" metal. Where as Iron Maiden is more melodic metal that came out of the "british metal" movement in the late 70s early 80s. All metal relies on great lyrics and composition. Maiden relies on it's driving/galloping bassline and overlays duelling guitar melodies over it. Metallica relies on chugging bass and rhythm guitars and intersperses heavy riffs over top it. Maiden has a operatic style of singing with long drawn out notes Metallica uses it's harsh shouting gutter metal growl to deliver gut punches, and drummer Lars uses a double bass (Maiden does not) to give extra depth and punch. There are other bands out there that are similar to each - but you wouldn't mistake them for being similar to the other as the two bands have stark contrasts.

As a Metallica fan, the lyrics of this song are what make it such a masterpiece. There are 3 parts to this song the beginning where the drugs are convincing the man to take more drugs as if that is all he needs. As if drugs would solve all his issues. The man knows he's already not doing well but trusts the drug's false promises. In the middle of the song, the slow part is the high that the drug is giving the man. This leads to the end of the slow part showing the man coming out of the high leading to the crash afterwards. While coming out of the high into the crash the man is begging for more drugs as that is all he knows how to do at this point and asks the drugs to "fix me" and the drug claims its victory on the man with laughter. The man realizes that the Drugs lied to him and that it's really just taking away his dreams, and future. The last part is where the man is now too far into his addiction and the Drugs, his Master, is controlling his entire life like a Puppet Master. At this point the man is so far in that his life has become a living hell and he's now doing drugs for breakfast and the drugs now occupy and rule over his life. It's just a story of personified Drugs talking to man, and the progression of man's addiction.

Ok so I'm 55 years old and have been a metalhead since 4rth grade 1977. First rock, then acid rock. Then metal. Then heavy metal. Then speed metal. That brings us roughly to 1986 and metalica also anthrax....praise be the two. Lmao! So you got iron maiden that introduced all us rebellious male teens and our girlfriends to the new sound of metal. My definition: metal is a faster pace hard rock, then Steve Harris decided to play bass guitar. With eight fingers at a time! Producing heavy metal. Heavy metal songs are songs about war, death, natural disasters, drugs, fights, accidents, and all negative aspects of human life. Not unicorn tears, pretty girls, and rainbows(except Dio and let's not fool around and just say dio was his own genre). So I listened to metal before bouts, football games,soccer, bmx-ing, camping, and all other lizard mantality events...concerts of course.so you got maiden metal with tons of treble and then speed metal(metalica, fasterpussycat, anthrax)playing maiden style but with little treble much more bass.... in singing, drums, bass and electric guitars and sped up.just a touch.

Iron Maiden are about 10 years older and British. Musically the difference would be a few things: 1) Steve Harris who is the creator of Iron Maiden, the bass player, and who writes most the music tends to have a very strong triple note gallop sound from the bass you can hear throughout many songs, but at the same time very clean. 2. The two guitarists with Dave Murray and Adrian Smith tend to harmonize a lot of pretty sounds that are brighter and again very clean technically. 3. musically and lyrically they use a lot of old books and movies whether it be storytelling, theatrical or even based on history from war. with all this put together you have the amazing vocals and operatic sounds of Bruce Dickinson who tends to hold the notes very long. Metallica on the other hand looked for a more aggressive approach with a lot of music coming from the heart of the singer and rhythm guitarist James hetfield along with the drummer Lars Ulrich. Most the music from Metallica tends to be a lot about life and death, War, Drugs, Suicide, some "Religious" based history and psychologically therapeutic songs based on adversity or just struggling within.

What separates them from Maiden is that each band draws from a similar well, but they let themselves be themselves. That's why the music is great. Iron Maiden has lots of melody in their riffs and singing, and so does Metallica. Metallica were definitely influenced by Maiden, but instinctively carved out their own sound.

My interpretation real fast is that it's a song sung from the drugs point of view, until just after the soft melodic part(midway)where briefly the user yells back at the master, but of course winds up ruled again by the master. So I always considered the melodic middle as the time the user tryst to kick the dope but then as usual finds himself using again. Obeying his master. Calling his name is the addiction wanting the drug. It really does do that to.....call for it. Until it gets it. Very horrible. Be well always and keep it up. No more "I'm stupid" please. Or I'll have the sandman creep into your night and force you to sleep with one eye open. Lol... oh fade to black by metalica, And my alltime favorite band Queensryche react to..... take hold of the flame live Tokyo or Queen of the Reich off their first LP.

The Master could be any addiction, really. But yes most people interpret it as hard drugs, likely stuff like cocaine and heroin.

Can I also just request that as you learn Metallica, for yourself, that you don’t watch the videos until you hear the music individually. It’s one of the best ways to appreciate them. Of course the videos are great too but you seem to like the music a lot and I think it would benefit you. Additionally, I would like to recommend the band TOOL, also, please and thank you without the videos, to begin with. They are Transcendent.

Composition wise; Metallica has more transitions & less marching; more thrash elements; Hetfield is more metal, Dickenson more classical and operatic. Check out their 72 Seasons (New Album) a lot of the older feel With a newer take. Or go to their roots with 'Kill em All - that would be better

Also Megadeth is awesome! Mustaine created a lot of Metallica's riffs. Lars and Hetfield are JUST masters @ composing!!

Metallica‘s first five albums are their best, the two prior to this one were very good as well, and to me come close to matching this album. Everything after the and Justice for all album, though is a downgrade from these first five albums. Back in the early 80s it was not as easy for bands to get their music out, he really had to have it played on the radio, and of course the most popular bands we’re getting that sewed new bands, and especially bands of a new type like Metallica we’re not very well known. Most of us who got into them in the early 80s simply found their albums at the record store, or saw a T-shirt or a poster something that made us interested.

70s Hard Rock was considered devils music. So in the 80s we teens had to sneak to listen to metal. Lol

Iron maiden came out way before metallica so it wouldn't surprise me if metallica looked up to Iron maiden.

The difference you're trying to identify between Metallica and Maiden is dirt. Metallica is more of a grungy dirty sound. It's the reverb from the guitar. Regarding One, if I remeber correctly, that was off their album Justice For All (after Master) and One was their first radio success.

This song is sung from the drugs point of view. Taunting the addict to take more and more till they die, then the drug laughs in your face.
