@andrerenault4 жыл бұрын
There's a video out there, I think from Art-of-Guitar, explaining that it's actually the opposite. Lars is actually off the beat at first, even though it feels right because of the riff. With the fill, he gets back into the rhythm but it feels jarring.

@@5usp3c7 Um... what? I've literally never heard this opinion ever. The drums on ride the lightning were mixed horribly. You can barely hear any of the kicks, and the cymbals all blend together. The high hat is also buried. Master was better, but the snare still has that 80's reverb, and the kicks were still done the old school way. Listen to the battery drum track and you see how much was completely buried in the final mix. Justice easily has the most clear/modern sounding drum mix out of the first 4 albums. Its not even close.

The Only 100% correct Blackened drum cover on youtube (or anywhere else). It is very important to play the kick pattern like he does between 0:30 and 0:50. Most covers don't get this right. It's also important to play the slow portion with the Emotion it deserves - otherwise it doesn't carry the proper "energy", and he understands this. The tricky 3:39 and 5:10 sections are spot on. Every cymbal crash is placed correctly, no unnecessary (or missed) hits. Goddamit, THAT's how you cover a song!

A groundbreaking album for metal, ahead of it's time despite the bad production and non existent bass. Lars pioneered the style and sound of metal drumming for years to come, to be solely judged on the latter part of his career is utterly unfair. Despite all the negatively regarding Metallica nobody has ever come close to taking their place in History and never will.

As a drummer Lars was my first influence. I happened to luck out and catch him right when AJFA came out and WOW! The people that trash him are thinking purely of the Black album, Load and Reload albums. And whatever the hell that snare was on Saint Anger. But these "critics" must never have heard Whiplash, Fight Fire with Fire, Creeping Death, Call of Chtulu, Battery, Damage Inc. Master of Puppets, Orion, Dyer's Eve, One, Harvester of Sorrow. All masterpieces of drumming.

I think the production _could_ have been different (not automatically better) if they wanted it to be different. You can listen to a random snippet and know instantly which album it is. And it’s a Masterpiece. The „ missing bass“ was imo because of the songwriting in general. It’s clearly there where it was needed and was forced out of the way more or less in moments when huge guitar riffs didn’t leave enough space for it. I listened to the album very often - back then and today and never thought I would like it better if the bass was louder in the mix. Absurd debate imo.
@steves67563 жыл бұрын
@@robertschererx Listen to And Justice For Jason. You will see what a difference those bass tracks made. ESPECIALLY Blackened. It was like hearing that song for the first time. Even though I have heard it a hundred thousand times before. Definitely worth a listen if you haven't already.
@robertschererx3 жыл бұрын
@@steves6756 yeah I know it and some more. I listened to the remixes when I first noticed the whole debate to get a clue what is going on. Technically it’s brilliant, but to me it’s just not right anymore and feels like overdone in the other direction. Sort of. Imagine what magic must have been happening when such complex and long songs come out in the end. I think James and Lars weren’t ready yet to give Jason the right spot in the whole thing and ended up focusing on their own stuff to make it work even without any bass in most situations. Anyway- it is what it is and I love it as it is because it’s the whole story and circumstances behind it that came together, so it’s probably not a simple mixing accident…

With all the crazy drummers that there are today, I think people forget that the drummer is supoosed to be the back bone of the music. They are supoosed to keep the groove together. Andy E Session Drummer? 🤔
@pascalschulz58947 жыл бұрын
Could be.. The drumming on this album is kind of complex or different to what lars played at the time

Nope. It's 100 percent Ulrich, throughout the album. Hmm, maybe Bob Rock played drums on Dyers...

Lars played drums on the album. However each song is cut and pasted together. Lars didn't play any of the songs full live in the studio. Also Bob Rock wasn't with the producer yet. He first produced them back 1991 when the Black Album was released

Until now the best blackened cover I've ever heard.

Lars WAS good. In Justice for all, there is when he did alot of copy paste.

Very good job. You kept the 'required' fills and added some of your own flair. Great drum sound as well. This is the tone that should have been used for And Justice for All.. Good job!
