Same reason there is two guitarist in Metallica, without it, the sound/texture is thinned out, you add two guitars to layer the sound twice over, gives it a thick jammy tone like off of Load(of course other albums weren't as bass heavy as load and reload), when one person screams it has that base scream you add a layer onto it it's thicker and more solid, you add three(James singing Die every 4 measures) and it makes the tone even more thick and gritty, add the entire audience into the mix, you get the point. Adding extra instruments(the voice is one of them) allows extra texture and removing the thinning of sound.
