Metallica may not be the fastest, but damn if they haven't perfected the craft if heavy metal. James is a down picking riff god. Kirk is a Soloing master. Cliff was a musical genius. And what Lars may lack in technical skill, it makes of for in the studio with good production intellect. The The bands albums are all cohesive and sounds great as a collective work. There will always be other bands but you will be hard pressed to find a band as well rounded

I was a 16 year old metalhead (1986), Hanging out at the "Swinging Tree" (a tree with a rope you use to swing out into the lake) at Bell Lake and my friend popped Master of Puppets into his ghetto blaster and instantly a mosh pit formed. It was one of those epic summer moments that live in your memory forever. I remember we swam down to the the city rec canoe club released their wharf and floated out to the middle of the lake with my friends, got the ghetto blaster crank that mutha to 11! Rocked the lake for good 5 hours when the cops finally got a boat in the water. Turns out the cops just dragged us to shore and returned the wharf to the canoe club and gave that look of "We're the cops so we should be mad but City Rec manager is watching so we'll act all pissed but that was cool". Best summer ever!

Damage Inc is not a band... but it SHOULD BE (what a great name). I use the name for a comic book vigilante group in my teens (the 80s). Much of the early Metallica library was my inspiration was effectively the "soundtrack" for my comic-book-adapted-to-film vision (which never happened). Still this song, its parent album, and much of the Metallica tunes between 1983-1988 bring back a lot of cartooning/illustrating memories.

well... I just analyzed it, and it fluctuates between 180 & 190 BPM (beats per minute). However... several sites online are saying that it's 91-92 BPM. I think they're counting at half time. Also... Dragon Force's Fallen World is stated to be at 110 BPM. So by my estimation it's actually at ~220 BPM.

The difference now is the endurance. They didn't just do that speed for one song & then go into slower work. They have several very fast songs on that album. For 7-8 minutes at a time. Sure, I might find some faster, but can they keep that speed up repetitively over & OVER again for nearly 10 minutes PER SONG every night? Most songs are reduced to radio sized 3 minute CLIPS of songs nowadays. ANYWHO, GREAT reaction. I agree. Master of Muppets is easily their best album in my opinion.

This song as recorded, is somewhere around 190+ BPM and they play it faster live. This isn't even their fastest song. New to you channel so don't know what Metallica songs you have reacted to yet. Get your Shit'n pants on before listening to Blackened or Dyers Eve.

I think Metallica didn't use the metronome at this point of their career. So, they probably never shitted on their pants…. :-DGreat reaction, though. Master of Puppets is the kind of album you could react to all songs in a row.

Disposable Heroes is probably their fastest, but to answer your question, there were indeed bands around before and during Metallica that were playing as fast and faster. Slayer formed in 81. Anthrax was on tour with Metallica in Denmark when Cliff was killed. There were also other bands like Testament, Overkill, Exodus, Nuclear Assault, Sepultura, etc. Even some punk bands like Dirty Rotten Imbeciles and Suicidal Tendencies were experiencing with the thrash sound at around the same time. What set Metallica apart from them all was their ability to hone in on catchy guitar licks and complex harmonies. But as far as being responsible for the birth of thrash, none of these bands including Metallica hold that honor. That honor belongs belongs to the new wave of British metal bands in the 70s, and most of all to Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead. Even though Lemmy always said he just played rock n roll, every thrash band that has ever existed cites Lemmy as one of their biggest, if not their absolute biggest influences. Metallica even wrote a song about him on their newest album. He and Motorhead are the grandfather of thrash metal.
