The album will be called "72 Seasons," so it's a reflection of their first 18 years. One of their biggest influences when they started out was Motorhead, especially the song "Overkill." Lars's drumming in "Lux Aeterna" is just like Phil's drumming in that song. The song even stops and starts up again, just like in "Lux Aeterna." The guitar riff and the solo are both similar to their song "Hit the Lights" from their first album Kill 'Em All. They were still in their teens when they were writing those songs.

Yeah, when I first heard Lux I immediately thought of those Motorhead songs they covered on Garage Inc...looking forward to hearing what the rest of the album is like, if it is indeed an homage to all their influences over the years it could be very interesting.

Just being a band still together after FORTY years is insane. Being alive with these guys' lifestyle when they were younger is INSANE. Touring 200 shows a year even though you're all worth half a billion dollars in net worth alone, that's just love of the craft man. But finally, actually improving your style and changing your style as much as metallica does, James hetfield at the very least is like a genius song writer. His vocals are KILLING it lately and in this track it shows. Kirk is back to actually playing a solo without a wah wah covering all of his technical mistakes - and Lars' drumming in this and their live concerts is really quite good these days. The man apparently read youtube comments sections cus he took our criticism to heart finally and as a living FOSSIL is now quite improved at playing drums. I am shocked after saying all of this that they are even human. having so many problems is one thing but dealing with all of them and still keeping the band together. That's an emotional juggling routine that is near impossible for 99.999% of people in music. It's like a family because your all speaking a language that relatively few people know how to speak, people can hear it and appreciate it, but you know how to speak it, intimately and technically and are lauded all over the world for your ability to do so. This makes everything in a band super personal, your friends, but your suddenly now worth millions - the fights begin right t hen and there for most bands. The drug use and alcoholism and apparently also having women constantly throw themselves at you isn't great for the male soul either tbh cus all 4 of these guys are married with kids and way happier than they would be without them. To paraphrase Kirk: "being introduced to the affections of women through threesomes from girls I never knew the names of for very long was not a great for my ego or my love life." He was saying that in an interview where he was asked about why he was attracted to his wife out of all of the women he's been with all over the planet: she was "the first one that wasn't just a groupie - she was barely a fan." James has said similar things about his own wife. James says all the time his kids and his wife are what keeps him grounded and not acting like a famous guy - cus they're the first ones to go "hey dad ur being kind of a jerk atm" or soemthing like that haha. He's a very nice guy, the man keeps his own bees and gives jars of honey to his neighbors on Christmas. What's more not to love?

James doesnt seem to consistently work on his voice - he'd mentioned in an interview few years ago that his son had said he sounds like shit live, so he started to practice - and sounded fire on the following tour. I'm sure he did practice for this record, but I dont think he consistently keeps it in check, cause as much as he's been my favorite musician, he definitely sounds like the runny shits some tours, circa 2015, pre Hardwired, his voice had zero grit, same for the MIAWTW tour in 04. It's not because he was sick, cause he sounds different when he gets sick - grittier, tbh, he's mentioned fans like how he sounds sometimes when he's got a cold. Anyway, James having grit in his voice is key, and he doesn't always have it. Layering vox and adding reverb in the studio absolutely give his recordings the classic grit on some songs as well, compare Cyanide, with less beastly layering, to like, Atlas, Rise! and I think the difference stands out a bit more. James voice is dope no matter which record, but the quality and tricks do vary.

Glad you guys reacted to this! I laugh at people saying “wait till you hear this trash” etc. As a band as old as Metallica, it’s harder and harder to release new material. It will always be compared to the peak of their career and at this point it doesn’t matter. I’m just happy they stay so inspired to write and a decent song at that. They have nothing left to prove and I think it gives them drive to still tour and perform the old stuff too.

I feel like boys here went through what we went through when Load first came out. Now this song has a Motorhead tribute feeling, has a touch of Hit the Lights, the feel of Fuel an a funky run through. I appreciate that they drove the main riff and kept it short like Hardwired. It's a call to come see them in concert and join the kindred alliance of music that lets us cast our demons out. Doesn't need to be intricate, it will probably seamlessly tie into whiplash or something on stage. It's a cool tune to welcome them back.

Lux Aeterna is their album feature, so it's going to be radio friendly, quick, punchy and easily-digestible. Likely, the rest of the album will keep these key elements, but i'm sure there will be songs on the album that are more complex, longer and potentially experimental.

Love the Marvin Hagler reference. Who hid Kirk Hammett's 'wah-wah' pedal? Thank goodness! This song is tight, the production is solid, and having the notes behind James's voice helps his overall sound, even if the lyrics are simple. Honestly, if you read the lyrics it really lines up with the current situation in Ukraine, and perhaps Metallica is showing support indirectly, as I know their charities are helping with the refugee situation there directly.

re the sound of hetfields voice - metallica record almost everything in the key of E or E flat - this song is in A, so in a higher note than normal, so Het's voice is in a higher range than we're used to hearing it (or at least since the Kill em all era) which also makes it sound "happier"

When I first heard this tune the other night I was kinda torn, as far as my initial impression. Now a couple days have gone by and I have found myself repeatedly going back to listen to it, over and over. The chorus where James screams the song title is everything in this track. That and the kick drums. But just the way James climbs the ladder vocally to belt out the chorus is such an amazing hook. This almost feels like a sorta power metal almost-but-not-quite Dokken-type vibe meets British new wave meets sped-up Load riffage meets a more polished version of Hit the Lights. It's gonna be a go-to live song (the lyrics kinda reflect that) and the song's energy and the boys' own energy are undeniable. I can't explain it, but all I know is my ear loves it. I'm very happy Metallica is back with new tunes and I'm also very happy they kept the album under wraps so now it's arriving soon - to MY mind - rather than them announcing it 2 years out and then us playing the waiting game. These old dogs can still hunt. 🤘🤘
