That whole album they did with the San Francisco symphony orchestra is amazing in my opinion. Nothing beats rock and orchestral music together.

The 2nd one was just as epic. I, and I don't know how, won the lotto for night two of that show. I do feel there were some missed opportunities for certain songs to be done. Perhaps they'll be up for a 3rd

Heavy Metal has it's roots partly in Orchestral and symphonic music. Plus, if you listen to how Metallica structures their songs, you will see that they do it in a way that is very much how a composer would construct a Symphony. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that Cliff Burton was heavily influenced by Classical music and it just became ingrained early on in how they compose their songs. They are unique in that regard when it comes to Thrash in general.

S&M was a truly remarkable project that really was something truly special and produced some of the best music I've EVER heard from them. This was basically born from their collaboration with score composer Michael Kamen (Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves) on the "Black album", when he helped them create the orchestral elements for Nothing Else Matters. Years later they ran into him again and he provided them with a copy of the alternative scored version he'd created for the song, which really blew them away, and planted the seed of an idea that they should do a much larger and more involved project together, which led to their creation of S&M (essentially Symphonica & Metallica), a live performance where the band played a selection of their greatest hits (and some new material) accompanied by a full orchestra performing accompaniments orchestrated by Kamen himself, who ALSO served as the conductor. The phenomenon was captured on the exceptional double album S&M, which is a genuine masterpiece and one of their VERY BEST records ...

Metal & Rock fans know him for his orchestral or string arrangements he contributed to songs like Def Leppard's "Two Steps Behind" and MetallicA's "Nothing Else Matters". He also collaborated successfully with Bryan Adams and R.J. Metallica teamed up w/ classical composer Michael Kamen (who did the strings for 'Nothing else matters' by Metallica... as well as 'Silent lucidity' by Queensryche... 'Who wants to live forever' by Queen...etc.) w/ the San Francisco Symphony in 1999 for a special performance of their songs enhanced w/ the power of a full orchestra. Metallica also wrote 2 new songs for the 2 night performances - 'No leaf clover'... and 'Minus human'. They admitted that they were not really fans of Deep Purple's 1969 orchestral album 'Concerto'... which was the first time a rock band had teamed up w/ a classical symphony orchestra... But 30 years later, they bought into the idea and played limited shows w/ a symphony in their career... This live performance was filmed and recorded for the live CD and concert video 'S&M' in '99. Some of the memorable Metallica tracks w/ the symphony included - 'The call of Ktulu' instrumental... 'Of wolf and man' ... 'Until it sleeps'... 🔥🔥🤘🤘

It's always great seeing an orchestra performing music with the composer at the helm. Kamen was a master at combining sounds in all of his scoring. Will be missed! Edit to add: Lars had jokingly made a comment about extending the performance to 3 nights so the band could have a night to sit in the audience and listen to the orchestral score by itself.

Both the original S&M and the S&M2 shows from a few years ago are amazing. Even songs that were already Metallica classics were brought to new life by the addition of the orchestra. Call Of Ktulu, For Whom The Bell Tolls and Master Of Puppets are a few that stand out. But the real highlight for me is James' performance of Unforgiven III from S&M2. He sang without the band, only the orchestra, and it was incredible.

The really sad thing about the S&M concert/album things is that this would have been right down Cliff's alley. Cliff was a classically trained musician and a god on the bass guitar. I appreciate and love that you are loving this, but please look in to the background of the S&M project (Symphony&Metallica). Michael Kamen approached the band and they only practiced a couple of times before the concert. As far as "No Leaf Clover", the band only did it one time before in a practice session and this was the first time they performed it before an audience, the knocked it out of the park.

You just saw what in my opinion is the pinnacle of music. The merger of classical music with Metallica, who's suitability for a classical cooperation in their songs is undervalued. You said two things during your reaction which made me want to suggest two tracks for you. First, the classical element, if you want a reason to close your eyes on occasion and take the music in, check out Call of Ktulu from the very same 1999 S&M concert. If you liked James more soothing lyrics, check out the version of Nothing Else Matters from the same concert. The entire concert is Orchestra fully integrated into Metallica music, so you can't really go wrong, but I guess a 120 min reaction to the entire thing is a tall order to do :)

I've always wondered what the members of the orchestra think during these (or Epica, et al) live performances with metal bands since they're normally playing "classical" music. Do they enjoy the metal too? The crowd interaction/cheering (since normally its reverent quiet during the classical shows)?
@dmwalker248 ай бұрын
I've played both. Some of them love it. I'm sure there are some who find it less interesting. I think there's a certain amount of 'getting paid to do a job' mindset. This is a lot more like doing film score work than a performance of Mahler, Prokofiev, or Brahms.

S&M is a double live album From 1999, performed with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. It’s a really interesting album, mostly good, but there are areas with a sorta harmonic dissonance that I’m not sure was intentional.
