I heard it came about when James & Lars were talking about What would it be like to be trapped inside yourself with no way to communicate with the world and Cliff told them about the movie "When Johnny Got his Gun" and the rest is history.

I clean my house to that all the time...... I've grown up listening to Metallica (I'm 36 now). There is a message in every song. My kids are growing up listening to classic rock and metal. One and Master of Puppets are my favorite Metallica songs! I do sing along to them too!

The music video does tell the story, but I think for someone who is hearing it for the first time, a lyric video is better with an explanation of the song prior. The video tells the story, but the lyrics are very important and are hard to hear at some points of the video. However they should watch it at some point.

I liked your Moms honest opinion, these are not lyrics you would sing while cleaning the house, but the deeper meaning and tragedy of war are real, maybe with another listen and the video she could learn to appreciate what Metallica was trying to convey. With so many REACTION videos out there its good to hear an honest opinion for a first listen.

Based on the book/movie "Johnny Got His Gun." World War I soldier who loses his arms, legs, sight and any ability to express his desire to die. Very powerful song. You and your mom missed the pain in the story. I'd suggest watching the original video with lyrics. It might change your perception. Great and honest reaction though.

oh man,.. This song from Metallica is kind of tough on her generation, I think, if she had some background of where the songs concept came from... The movie Johnny's got a gun... Her generation would have more of a connection, plus you must absolutely show her the video for the song... I would like to hear your comments and thoughts from the end of that video, the movie clip cut in at the end of the video. This is an incredible song from Metallica... She's right one of their best. But, it takes some information to understand it. :-)
