You guys Are turning to metal fans little by little. Awesome.

While this song is based on the book/movie, "Johnny got his Gun", according to James Hetfield who wrote it, it was more about the experience of feeling trapped in ones body. He had been discussing that he wanted to write a song expressing the feeling he experienced as a child and one of his bandmates suggested he watch the movie or read the book(I don't recall which), but that's how this song came to be. Such a masterpiece with such a deep meaning. Also the song does end abruptly, but there is a video that contains excerpts from the movie that do add some context to the lyrics, but can be distracting for a first time listener.

Completely based on the book, "Johnny Got His Gun." All about a young soldier that was completely destroyed by war except for his thoughts. Unable to even let it be known to others that he was aware, he prayed for death. A nurse caring for him finally realizes that and..... Well, read the book.

This song is paralleled with Dalton Trumbo's 1938 book 'Johnny Got His gun', with the 1971 movie making the clips that are in the music video. They wrote the song based on an idea handed off in passing and later discovered that the book was the source, which is why the lyrics reference a land mine and in the book it was artillery fire. Metallica's gone 'to war' many times and used Hemingway's 'For Whom The Bell Tolls' as a basis for the song of the same name, and then there's Disposable Heroes, songs referencing more modern forms (nuclear apocalypse) with Fight Fire With Fire and Blackened, later get into topics closer to PTSD with Day That Never Comes, Confusion, Hero Of The Day, and so on. Metallica is completely unafraid of painting a dark portrait when it's needed to tell the story, and that's where the power starts.

"It's like a machine gun!!" That's exactly right my friend. First part of the song is about the grieve of war, second part is about the mayhem of war itself...And yes, there's Metallica and everyone else, at what they do of course. They're Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin all together in their own genre. Music of ages.

Love watching your videos!! There was a wrong lyric.... The actual lyric is, "Back in the womb is much too real." The man is hooked up to hospital machines ("fed through the tube that sticks in me") that sustain every part of his life, just like being in the womb and completely dependent upon the mother.
@DougWJ5 жыл бұрын
I highly recommend that you watch the original Metallica video for this song - maybe one of the greatest music videos - which plays behind scenes of an anti-war movie - Johnny Got His Gun. It is a very powerful movie and music video as the song is about this soldier who is helpless in a hospital bed with no arms, no legs, his head is covered by a bag, he cant speak - and he just wants to die - but he isn't capable to tell anyone - so he is just kept alive and helpless. Listening to the song brings out the true meaning when you watch the brilliant music video they did.

I agree that this is the best Metal song ever. I’m a huge Metallica fan and I have every album, and this is my favorite Metallica song and my 2nd favorite song across all genres of music. You might be interested to know that there is a music video for this song. You should try watching it, maybe not as a reaction, because then it would be like you’re reacting to the same song twice, but maybe in your own free time check out the music video. The song is based on the film/novel Johnny Got His Gun. Seeing the music video and listening to the song without the video are two very different experiences but equally as impactful- -For future reactions, you should try Metallica’s “Master Of Puppets”, although you may already know that song since you said you are familiar with a few songs already. Or you should react to Metallica’s song “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)”. I would be interested to see a reaction to that for the fact that you are counselors. With that song being from the point of view of a person committed to a psychiatric hospital (apparently it’s based on the film One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest), seeing a counselor’s take on that song would be interesting. Plus, it’s similar to “One”. One was the third ballad Metallica wrote and Welcome Home (Sanitarium) was the second. Metallica’s five classic era ballads all feel related, like the are siblings or cousins to each other. And I personally feel like Welcome Home (Sanitarium) is like a little brother to the song One. In fact, any of their classic era ballads would be good songs to react to. Anyway, if you read all that then I want to thank you for taking the time to read through it, and also thank you for taking the time to react to songs like these. Hope you guys have a nice day. :)

Try metallica's 'Fade to Black'. And when you have done that, try 'orion', and then try 'to live is to die' You have only just begun with Metallica. I have selected these because they are a perfect balance of the hard thrash of true metal mixed with the more harmonic ballad style.

And many Metallica fans consider Master of Puppets to be even better. Many writers seem to have an issue with metal in general. It's better that you didn't watch the video, the added movie clips are a bit distracting. In those clips, the badly wounded soldier is tapping "kill me" in Morse Code.

They did look for a singer, but struggled to find one. Dave volunteered to do it. Like most early metal singers, they thrashed their voice without proper technique. Now before you insult Mustaines voice again, he got throat cancer in recent years and recovered. So yeah he didn't want to sing and look what happened. I find Dave's voice perfect for Megadeth. I'm a huge fan of both Metallica and Megadeth btw.
