The meaning of the song was based off the book called "Johnny's got his gun". This is shown in the music video.
The story is an antiwar novel about an American soldier who served in the first world war. While crossing the trenches HE gets hit by an artillery shell. Afterwards he is left without arms, legs, eyes, ears and nose. He is left in this state without an end.
"I cant remember anything I cant tell if this is true or real deep inside I feel to scream but this terrible silence stops me" Means - He is stuck and cannot move or scream because he cant do anything.
"Now that the war is through with me
Im waking up I cannot see
That there is not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now"
This shows how that now that the war is done he is stuck in the position that he cant see or do anything and is stuck in this pain
The next two lines are begging for death
"Fed through a tube that sticks in me
Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life from me"
Again he is stuck in the hospital able to do nothing and he wants someone to end it
That last verses start with how stuck in a perpetually hell and how he got there.
(c) Hiram Silsbee, studied at World History
Lyrics
I can't remember anything
Can't tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
This terrible silence stops me
Now that the war is through with me
I'm waking up, I cannot see
That there is not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now
Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God, wake me
Back in the womb it's much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can't look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I'll live
Fed through the tube that sticks in me
Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me
Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God, wake me
Now the world is gone, I'm just one
Oh God help me
Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God, help me
Darkness imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body my holding cell
Landmine has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell

The song is based on the book "Johnny got his gun". "Landmine has taken my sight, taken my speech, taken my hearing Taken my arms, taken my legs, taken my soul Left me with life in hell" describes what his live is in that deathbed. He just wants to die to end his suffering. Incredible song, this is actually the very first song that got me into thrash metal, so it holds a special place in my heart. Can you react to Floods by Pantera? It has, in my opinion, the best crafted metal solo ever recorded. The outro is also truly beautiful. Cheers from Serbia love

This soldier is laying there and only lives in his mind now. 'Landmine has taken my sight, taken my speech, taken my hearing taken my arms, taken my legs, taken my soul. Left me with life in hell" Imagine the only thing left is thinking while you lay there! Interesting story about Russia you tell. Great video dear!

The book "Johnny got his Gun" and the movie this video is based off, the Author baser the book on actual stories of actual events doing World War 1. This is one of the best and most graphic, detailed and war accurate account of World War 1. I was deeply touched by this book. I am a combat veteran myself of both Iraq and Afghanistan and many other operatorations in between during my time in the Military. My great grandfather was in world war 1 and both of his sons ( my grandfather) were in World War 2. World war 1 was the first time that life support devices were used in combat but, still the medical techniques were still "primitive" and barbaric during this period. What you see here in the video was a common occurrence during this time period. Amputation was still a very common practice then as a answer for battlefield injuries that most likely could have been saved with modern day medicine. So here you see a soldier severely wounded in combat by an explosion. Both his legs and arms were amputated and also as a result of the bast of the explosion, he lost his eyes, ears ( blind and deaf), parts of his face and jaw yet, they were able to keep him alive and breathing by using a tube to bring oxygen to his lungs. Its a incredible yet tragic story and sadly a common occurrence back in those days. Metallica does a beautifully wonderful job describing to the audience through music, exactly what it felt like to be in heavy combat and go though these experiences and this song and video capture it so well as if they were there themselves. The passion, intensity, pain, suffering, the nightmares and horrors of combat. I know all well. Listening to this song is a beautiful reminder of both the hell one experiences on the battle field and yet, this somg is very healing at the same time. It captures all of those intense emotions and visions then releases them so that are hearts can be healed. Thank you Metallica for doing this and I want to thank you for sharing and reacting to this video.

The voices are from the movie, his face is covered because when he jumped to the trench and got blown up his whole body was disfigured so he probably has no face. He tried to tell them to kill him but he can't talk, he remembers that he knows morse code, so he starts shaking his head in morse code, finally one of the military guys "reads" what he is trying to say which is "kill me" Over and over again 'kill me". In the video the nurse takes pity on him after learning that, but is stopped before taking him of life support so he remains alive trapped in that hell... very sad story and a masterpiece of song and video.

You're right though. No one listening to this song is a WW1 basketcase, and yet it has broad appeal. There are layers of meaning. While the movie focused official video is impactful, I prefer listening to the studio version without the movie dialogue interruptions. In my opinion it's in the argument for greatest rock song of all time.

One has always been such an interesting song to me. Just the way it progresses and weaves and the way it switches from melancholy and sadness/anger in the verse and chorus to a happier/positive theme in the post chorus, then gets really fast and hard-hitting in the end, really musically interesting, really good stuff. One song I really think you would love is The Rain Song by Led Zeppelin, I promise you it’s one of the most beautiful and perfect songs you will ever hear in your life. I recommend the live version from 1973 in Madison Square Garden from their “The Song Remains The Same” concert movie. The live version is tuned up a whole step from the recording and the song sounds so much better both in that key and live👌Hello from Idaho btw✌️

Took from the book Johnny Get Your Gun. About a soldier who goes to war and comes back a vegetable after being blow up by a land mind and looses his arms, legs, and his sight. Kept alive by life support systems he wants only to die. Yes the scenes came from a movie made from the book. You interpret it very well. Like your review very much. We too celebrate our veterans on Memorial Day. God bless our troops and keep them safe.

Great honest reaction! This just an example of the worst results of war and a soldier is his own living hell. When you brought up your Russian background it reminds me of my great grandfather who was shot by Germans in the hip in WW1 in Europe. He laid in a trench for 3 days until a Russian patrol found him. Always thankful for that and was fortunate to her him tell me the story when I was young. Enjoy your free time with family and now is a great time to get to know yourself better. Thanks for the reaction! 🎸

Lol Megadeth songs, Holy Wars/the Punishment Due, Hangar 18, Tornado of Souls or In My Darkest Hour. This song is similar to fade to black for me now as it's about pain, depression, suicidal tendencies etc. but cleverly disguised at face value as about the implicated incident, it's James the man is a genius and has obviously suffered to the highest degree which is another reason their music is so damn good and Lars knew this and could orchestrate his feeling with God like efficiency

This is Metallica's very first video and despite how good it is, they caught of lot of shit for doing it because from 1981 to through Master of Puppets (86) they said they'd never make videos. (They also criticized glam bands for wearing make-up) A lot of people said they "sold out." Their second video wouldn't be made for a couple more years in 1991 for the song Enter Sandman from the Black album. and it was so good, few complained. Great video, watch it if you already.

I remember, they were very adamant about no videos! Do you remember Green Jell-O? They would only do video to sell their music. I'm not sure if they were just kinda spoofing the video age or what, but they eventually put out CDs (after being forced to change the name to Jelly) I think the band may still exist, couple members of Tool are ex-GJ. Notable video 3 Little Pigs.

This song is very complex. And very intense. Takes a few listens for it to sink in. Arguably their finest song since it is a powerful mix of Slayer and Pink Floyd in my opinion. And the riffage is untouchable. The young man was nearly blown to bits and is wanting to just go to Heaven.... 20 million Russians were killed in WW2. No more War please.

Ok lady, James Hetfield has a broad imagination and he is savvy, even witty at applying poetic literature to his thoughts! It's about a soldier with no sight, no speech, no hair, arms, or legs, who is basically wanting to die! They used a film that could've been the inspiration for the lyrics! All the other things like his mask covering his face, well dude stepped on a landmine and he's all jacked up from it, and if it's taken his sight, I'd bet a nickle that his face is burnt hence, the mask! And for the record, it's a great song!

The synopsis of the movie: War has plunged Army soldier Joe Bonham (Timothy Bottoms) into an unending nightmare. Hit by an artillery shell in World War I, Joe has suffered injuries that have all but erased his humanity: he's lost his sight, speech, hearing and sense of smell. But he still has the ability to think and remember, which, in the end, may be more a curse than a blessing. Trapped in his body, Joe realizes there's only one way out of his misery: death. Can he get a sympathetic nurse to help him?

The Metallica ' s original video of One is bad done in my opinion not worth the value of a great song as you can see when you see them live in concert. It's just the cruel story of a solidier that remains in solitude wounded and deadly suffering after a bomb hits him on the Battlefield . In their concert this song is veryl powerfull and emotional done, in official video very confused and i can see you are not fully satisfied and convicted too , and you are right !

It is about soldier like me willing to risk death or worse so that you remain free forever. people thank me for my sacrifice i chuckle to myself the best way to thank me is to stand up for your individual rights. I come from the last American Colony, Puerto Rico. This is based on a book called Johnny got his gun, about a boy that goes to war losses his, arms legs, jaw, nose, eyes and face. They cover his head so they don't have to look at the horrible mess that took the place of his face. I have no regrets in serving. I'll tell you an open secret that most vets know about war: War is a misunderstanding of what will be gained and what will be lost from top to bottom on all sides. Some fight to start it some fight to stop it. I hate war, I love my brothers in arms & I love this song. Thank you for your time & attention.
