Having few mates who happen to be fortunate enough making it to big stages in the industry, playing small packed club gig is way more intense according to them, because all eyes are on you, and they're super close looking at you whereas big stage, you don't really see them much, and you play what you've been playing all along.

On a massive festival stage you just see a sea of dots and flashes, plus you have loads of room to move around, and any mistakes will be swallowed by the outdoor acoustics. You can't get away with that shit in a tiny club. You fuck up, not only will everyone hear it, but they're so close that they'll see it too. I think you need to be at the top of your game more for a small venue than for a huge one.

Not to necro a comment but waaaay back in 95 there was this literal underground club in Nashville that was below this pool hall named Buffalo Billiards. Not sure what the clubs name was but it couldn't have fit more than 40 people comfortably. One day after playing billiards my friend and I went down to check it out and the place was damn near empty. Like 5 people were at the bar and I'd say about 8 milling around. The MC gets up on the stage and says "Hey there's not many people here but make some noise for these two guys that have one helleva sound. They call themselves Crystal Method." Ladies and gentlemen I'm no techno geek, or house tweeker, but that night, I swear I heard noises I had never heard before and sound that I haven't heard since. It was one of my favorite music experiences of my life. Afterwards we got to hang out with the guys as most people basically ignored them. We talked Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, as well as bands I had never heard before from Europe and just general bullshittery. It was pretty awesome.

I love watching any Metallica footage, and honestly I don't even totally dig anything after Black (Really Justice....but Black has some really great songs, and the fucking production, my god). But I'm just so proud of these guys. I remember being like what 18-19 and I saw the Justice tour....then they played the Grammy's haha, that was huge for us Metalheads back then.
