Sometimes when I drive my car and this song comes up I can’t help but turn down my windows and crank up the volume to 11. It’s that kind of a song for me. I just love it and I love death magnetic in general. No idea what everybody complains about the mix and I almost don’t care. People love to giving Metallica shit for the silliest reasons and I just try to ignore them and enjoy the music. I’m glad you liked this one and I hope to see more from death magnetic on your channel.

I think Death Magnetic, even with the mixing errors, is a very good and underrated album, in my opinion it's the best album since AJFA
@Kenjames102 жыл бұрын
I am happy you liked this one as it's my personal favourite song by Metallica. The riffs, the transitions and the great lyrics delivered in style by James. I guess 8.8 is fair enough since the mix isn't that great. I personally think the mix is fine but maybe the guitars and especially the drums are too loud. That being said you should have done the live version from Quebec 2009 as the sound quality is flawless and the performance is epic as hell!

The problem with this album isn't the mix, it's the levels. They pushed it really hard and there is distortion even without turning it up. That said, I love the album, but the loudness is a flaw.
@Owlyross2 жыл бұрын
Exactly this. The mix is absolutely fine. But it's compressed to hell. The Moderus version is the only one I listen to now simply because it helps these fantastic songs to shine

About the production you talked about in this song, metallica did a little trick called reupload a ""remastered"" version of the album to youtube (wich is basically the itunes or guitar hero, idk, remaster version) without telling anyone, because trust me, the original version of the album had an insane amount of "bleed" on the guitars and was really loud....not as bad as st anger production, that isn't fixed nor remastered, on that album you only have the live versions of the songs that sound great
@Defensive_Wounds2 жыл бұрын

I think the main issue with the mix of this album is that you can see the potential, the loss of space within the official album releases highlighted with the audio you can get from the Guitar Hero games where it's less compressed and loud make it even more noticeable.

The main riff is quite similar to "Why Go" by Pearl Jam. I don't remember anyone complaining about the mix itself, but the way it's compressed to be as loud as possible. For many it was the pinnacle of the loudness wars. Funny thing about Justice for All, I remember hearing that album when it was released and I actually fell in love with the production right away. Puppets was very warm and had tons of reverb but Justice came at you through the headphones and punched you in the face. I loved that and still do.

Anyone saying the bass is as buried as it was on Justice is full of it. This album is overproduced and strangely mixed, but the bass is audible. People don't seem to take into account that this was their first album without Bob Rock producing since "black album", instead going with Ric Rubin. Also, I really fully embrace this album, considering its the album following St. Anger.

Listen to DM through headphones. It’s exhausting at times to the ears especially the drums. I don’t mind the mix of Justice nearly as much. The guitars sound immense on Justice and I didn’t notice the lack of bass guitar for years because the guitars were so bass heavy. I do wish every Metallica album had the mix/mastering of the black album, however. It’s sonically amazing, but some of the songs could be better. Justice was the first Metallica/metal album I ever bought, so I’m biased, but it will probably always be my favorite album of theirs, lack of bass be damned.

Download the Metallica Guitar Hero tracks for the album, those are before a bigshot producer said: "It needs to be loud on 5$ airpods too, crank everything up! Produzafeid! Here's the receipt, I'm Out!". So the album is dynamic as it should have been. Like the rest, that mix is easy to tweak a good sound of hi-fi equipment.

The bass is fine. The compression issues on this album are most obvious in the cymbals, which hiss rather than crash. You can hear it on this song, but it's most obviously on The Day That Never Comes
@Wagoo2 жыл бұрын
You can hear it on every song on the original album release, but people get confused these days as Metallica have put out a less broken master in recent years (as heard in this reaction for example), that has vastly less digital clipping. The original master was apocalyptically bad.. it's the poster child for loudness wars hell

Everything u said is exactly how I feel just reversed. 😆 I can listen to justice on my headphones all the way through just fine. But when I listen to death magnetic it literally hurts my ears. There's so much fucking treble on that album or something. It's so loud and clangy. It's like James is screaming right in my ear. But I still love the album. I like the guitar hero remastered versions of the songs. Way more listenable. Funny how we can have complete polar opposite opinions of each album

Great song and album. I don't believe it was a bad _mix,_ but rather, a bad master. The dynamics were non-existent, and it was way over-compressed. Terrible *clipping* all over the place. This album was actually used by one of my professors at Full Sail University as an example when discussing the _"Loudness War"_ and how _not_ to master and over-compress. That said, they did eventually re-release this album with a much, much better and less over-compressed master. The dynamics are improved on it. I believe it's this newer master that's on streaming services (Spotify, Apple Music, etc) now.

This is my favourite song from Death Magnetic but it's a terrible solo from Kirk on this one. Say what you want about Bob Rock, that would have never made the cut if he was around.
@Wagoo2 жыл бұрын
It's not the mix that was ever broken with Death Magnetic - it was the master. Sausage fattened loudness wars waveforms until the point ALL the busy parts on the album digitally clipped like crazy and all the instruments melded into a horrible fizzy mess. The version in this video is a *fixed* master which they finally re-released in recent years. Ironically the version we ripped from Guitar Hero Metallica (stems) were always perfect.. thankfully that's been available almost as long as the official original broken master. Oh and Lars said the original CD sounded fine in his car lol

The one thing I can say about and justice for all was in the '80s when you only had 6x9s as your main base speakers with of course a booster and an equalizer it sounded killer with a good car radio the mix really showed when played on a house stereo that's my opinion and bought this album it just wasn't the Metallica I discovered on the metal massacre album way back in the day but that album Saint anger was the worst album I've probably ever heard again my opinion along with any grunge bands I thank God that died in a couple of years again my opinion if anyone got something from listening to it then they beat me I couldn't get nothing from any of it but that's the joy of music what I like some people will not like what they like I made despise and also Slayer fucking rules
