For the most part, people are the product of their environments (family, friends, region, country, nation, culture, ethnicity etc) that shape an individual, good and bad. Unforgiven are those who want the total control over the growth of a person, minimizing external influences and self exploration. In this case, James refers to his parents
@robertphillips213Ай бұрын
I disagree respectfully. I believe people are more largely a result of a mix of oppertunity and conflict, learning how to overcome obstacles and enemies forces you to grow while learning how to recognize and take advantage of oppertunities (and the regret created by overlooking or failing to exploit them fully out of fear) all have more to do with growth than the influences of other individuals. In the end, people only have power over you if you allow them. Once we are adults, no one can MAKE us do anything or be someone other than yourself. I've known people that faced horrific abuse, yet it only hardened their determination to never be like their dad and despite his fear of becoming his father he still managed to grow into an excellent father to his daughter even though he lacked many of the resources/money his dad had access to. Another childhood friend faced a similarly loveless and abuse father, yet grew to be a monster worse than the person he most despised and committed suicide.

This was from Metallica's 5th album in 1991... the self-titled "black" album that became their biggest commercial hit - their first #1 record. The first 4 Metallica records were harsh and heavy thrash metal records, which earned them a hardcore fanbase... So, going into the 5th record, Metallica wanted to write shorter songs that could appeal to more fans... They had acoustic parts of their heavy songs {'One' ... 'Welcome home (Sanitarium)' } but they recorded 2 songs that were mostly acoustic ballads for the first time - 'The Unforgiven' and 'Nothing else matters'... Both became huge singles from that album. 'The Unforgiven' was about James Hetfield (vocals & guitar) reflecting on the abuse & anguish he suffered under his parents' care - he was raised in a strict Christian science household. His parents divorced ... his dad left, and his mom died when he was a teenager from cancer (She refused treatment for her rigid beliefs). So, when James turned 18, he left and found himself alone in the world... music gave him an outlet to do something w/ his life... but he never forgave his parents for the childhood traumas he had endured. Metallica recorded a somewhat country-sounding sequel song 'The Unforgiven II' in 1997... and then made it a trilogy in 2008 w/ 'The Unforgiven III'... but the original was the best. Kirk Hammett is the lead guitarist (w/ curly hair ) - he joined Metallica in 1983, replacing guitarist Dave Mustaine (who would form his own band Megadeth)... Lars Ulrich on drums. The bass player here was Robert Trujillo (since 2003)... he replaced bassist Jason Newsted, who quit Metallica in early 2001. Newsted was in Metallica since 1986, after bassist Cliff Burton was killed in a bus accident in Sweden.

Went to this concert with 2 of my band mates. I was crowd surfing when they played this song. After they played the song James Hetfield mentions someone high-fiving everyone as they're going back, that was me. 😁 then they played 'now that were dead', then a girl kissed me cause she said I was a good singer. Those 10 minutes was the best part of the night. Then I got guitar picks from Kirk Hammett and a poster from a bassist from a band that was opening for them.

You’re so insightful, intelligent and have a wonderful personality. I enjoy experiencing your reactions. Btw the Face on Kirk Hammet’s guitar is “The Mummy” an old monster movie by Boris Karloff. Kirk is a fan of the classic horror movies much like Rob Zombie.

Thanks for nice reaction. They made this Unforgiven to trilogy, so I really recommend to listen also Unforgiven II and III after this. There is nearly 20 years between first and third. They all share some similarities, but describe the theme about bit different point of view. Awesome music all three, and again, focus on lyrics. I recommend to listen studio versions on these.

It's interesting how you describe the conflict between the emotion of the song and the appreciation of the musicianship. And maybe this is something I am unique in, but I think that experience created for me an example by which I am able to visualize experiencing something dark and painful, but also being able to see the beauty in the experience. I think this could be a theme in much of Metallica, and other artists, who portray dark subject matter in such a way.

The Original "video" was when they were much younger is my fav only because you can hear the instruments and voices much better; and the video fits better for you as you were spot-on and then go back to this version makes your experience better IMHO. I love love love your reactions. You accomplish what many reactors sometimes have difficulty with; that being your ability to emotionally convey how your reactions leave you feeling before, during and after "from your heart." I watch you and see your reactions and they are marvelous. Later on.

The song is James Hetfield thinking about what his life would have been like if he hadn't followed his dream of being a musician. Basically, if he had listened to what his parents, teachers, friends, and society told him he would've ended up getting a normal job that he wasn't necessarily passionate about and would've regretted it. Listening to what other people told him could've ruined his life. What I've felt / what I've known / never shined through in what I've shown / never be / never see / won't see what might have been / ... / never free / never me / so I dub thee unforgiven.
