I love the way Metallica stayed true to the original, which is a definite tribute to how much they liked Bob Seger's version of the song. I'm not generally a fan of most covers, but this one is the exception.
@toddstevens13
@toddstevens13 2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, the original is told in a quiet, almost reverent exhausted way, no grit, no power at all, just revelation that yes they want the quiet to re-energize, just want to be left alone, but never get to be ie the restaurant scene, but then the silence becomes unbearable as the long minutes become unsatisfying hours, until the little tease of vocal power at the end. This is nothing like that at all, so not close to staying true to the original style. I enjoy some Metallica, but this, not at all. But hey I am old as dust, and got to see them do this live over a dozen times and not once was the emotion emptiness of the situation not obvious.
@mariebishop7357
@mariebishop7357 2 жыл бұрын
@@toddstevens13 I, too, am "old as dust ". 😆 I have seen both Bob Seger and Metallica in concert. My comment about "true to the original " wasn't necessarily that it was a carbon copy, just that they didn't do like some bands do and over play it. But different opinions, different perspectives make the world go around.

This cover came out around the Reload album, if I remember correctly, and Metallica hadn’t been a thrash band for AGES by then. With that said, I do remember liking this cover better than the original, (when I learned it was a cover I eventually looked up the the original.) I could be a bit biased, I actually like/ed everything from …And Justice For All through ReLoad. I feel like an introductory band like Metallica is meant to broaden your horizons and expose you to more artists and styles, so after this song I really hadn’t revisited Metallica all that much, especially when it came to the Napster situation putting a vile taste in my mouth whenever I even think of that band. I love how James Hetfield sings “through,” and holds the “oooooo,” and you’re wondering “is he going to do it?” and then he does it, “oooAH!” smh. Around that time I also got myself a turntable and some records from one of the local thrift stores, and I started listening to some older music that way: Like Bob Seeger (greatest hits,) Tom Petty (Damn The Torpedoes,) Fleetwood Mac (rumors,) and even Rush (moving pictures.) I probably listened to Pink Floyd’s The Wall, the A Clock Work Orange score, King Crimson’s Court Of The Crimson King, James Taylor’s Greatest Hits, and The Who’s Who’s Next. A few of those I am looking to buy new but I still have most of them.

Glad you did this without the actual ridiculous music video that had little relevance to the actual song. It’d be far too distracting

This is now a classic by Metallica, thank you, great review. I was wondering if you ever heard of Buffy Sainte Marie (pronounce Saint Maa-ry) Native Canadian/American, borned in Canada but raised in Maine and Massachusetts by a Micmac adoptive family(has dual citizenship) You will be impress , wrote songs for many artists like Elvis, Joe Coker, Bobby Darrin and many more. She's an activist and many of her songs were block from airwave because of her political views, here is one called "You Got To Run (Spirit of the Wind) ; by Buffy Sainte Marie and Tynia Tagaq doing throat singing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWbdk2ONibh_qbs&ab_channel=polarismusicprize

I understand that it's give and take with these two, but it would be nice to see them react to an Alanis/Metallica or Delores/Metallica mash-up, so we could get them both boppin' with big grins at the same time. Now that would be something to see. ✌️

They definitely made this their own for sure. Personally I like both versions it just depends on the vibe which version I'm listening to. ✌❤🇨🇦

I love this song/version but the video doesn't reflect the lyrics. It's about a band/singer being on tour but the video is about a mother who's a stripper. It doesn't fit with all of the lyrics. You have to do Avenged Sevenfold - A Little Piece of Heaven (official video). Maybe you already did and it got blocked?

I grew up with Metallica in the early 80's and am a huge fan. I feel like they have made every single song that they've covered better..... except for this one. Don't get me wrong, I love this one and think it's awesome of them to pay tribute to Bob, but Seger's original version can't be touched! I've listened to the Garage Inc. album countless times and it amazes me how well they "Metallicafy" those songs!!

I prefer this over the original. Makes me wish Metallica would do more rock covers. (Produced by Bob Rock!). A whole album of them! (Sabbath, Zeppelin, G'N R, Stones etc.) Wishful thinking, but there it is.

Kill em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, And Justice for All, and Garage Days Re-Revisited contain 95% of all of Metallica's best songs. Anything after And Justice for All is pretty....meh.

Again, WHY NOT watch the OFFICIAL video??? It tells the STORY that is trying to be conveyed and it's a VERY emotional one. Brad, you don't ALWAYS need to read the lyrics to a song. Metallica had a story to tell in 1998 in their creative music video for this song. You are depriving Lex of that experience Brad because you need to read the words of every song, rather than focusing on the MUSIC itself along with the words (by hearing them and not reading them like they are in a text book) and sinking it ALL in. I can't watch this reaction, because I'm watching Brad intellectualize (as he always does) the lyrics and not just watch him FEEL and EXPERIENCE the music. The words are decipherable through audio and don't need to be read Brad. It's frustrating, because I WANT to like your reactions, but it's only Lex that actually loves the music that you guys choose to react to. Notice how she closes her eyes and it takes her away? That is what it does to 99.9% of music lovers, but for some reason, and even after all this time, you just don't connect with music or seem to enjoy it in any capacity. All you do is read words and attempt to interpret them. There is MUSIC being played Brad. Why can't you hear and enjoy it and let yourself FEEL it?

Now do their cover of "Astronomy". Song originally by Blue Oyster Cult. Who ties for my favorite band ever. But Metallica's cover of this song is one of the few I consider better than the original.
