Abuse, Depression, Suicide. A lot the older songs James wrote too. Kinda funny how Metallica won me over with just the music side of it when I was younger (I'm a guitar player), I understood the lyrics, but I just didn't actually "feel" them. Now in my early 30s I've been to a psych ward, rehab, abused a handful of substances, ODd, made mistakes, life experience, etc and going back to Metallica now I can empathize much more with the hell James lived through, and I'm worried about his mental state, as he's going through a divorce and shit. He opened up to a crowd about his depression not too long ago. Hope he's ok and knows he's made a positive impact in a lot of people's lives.

I think it's the same guy, Greg Fidelman; he's still annoying me. The sound is the best since ReLoad, but while no longer clipping, it's still brickwalled. Over produced in my opinion
@ThrashRebel Жыл бұрын
At least he is isn’t doing the squealing in this song. Thanks to Bob Rock’s influence, I think since “The Black Album,” he’s tried too hard and got pretty cheesy. He’s much better when he just sings as himself and doesn’t try to add all of the “artifacts” in like squeals, et cetera.
@ThrashRebel Жыл бұрын
@@staygold902 everything they’ve done has been over-produced since “the black album.” They, clearly, were more concerned with radio play and profits. Most of the other “big four” bands have stayed fairly true to themselves. But, then again, maybe James and Lars are staying true to themselves. Maybe their political awareness and desire for complexity was just a phase. Maybe they changed and no longer care about the state of the nation, the state of the people, the death of democracy, the ravages of war. Maybe now, they just want to write music that is simple to play and people can shake their booties to it. However, I will give them respect for this song. It’s got a dark feel. I’ve got to give some respect. Metallica had a little an influence on me when I started writing thrash metal and playing in bands. Although, admittedly, I was MORE (musically) influenced Hexanhaus, Overkill and Death Angel. Jame’s vocal style definitely (originally) influenced my style. I just wish they would care about social issues, again. They have the power to influence people, wake them the f… up. But, I guess, once some people become wealthy, they become detached from the struggles of people who are less affluent. I guess they no longer care about service members who get used like pawns in illegal wars. I cared, in my teens. I joined (for financial reasons). I served in an illegal invasion. So, my level of care about corruption only increased with age. I just wish Jame’s still cared about service members, and other who struggle. He used to care about freedom and had a dislike for corruption. I wish he still would.

I like it. Sounds to me like Metallica found a way to modernize their sound just enough, without coming off as inauthentic or try-hards. Continuing down the path already chosen for their last one or two albums. Totally respecting the effort that late into their career and actually enjoying the outcome so far.

Fantastic! I love when James uses a more raspy tone instead of the higher pitched singing. This has so much better of a feel for me. The whole band is sharp and on point in this. Love the longer intro where all the band members get to strut a bit. Love it guys! Been jamming these boys since the 80's and this catches my attention.

I'm 53 listening since 85, this is just what we want to hear, they really can't get any better... did I hear a tinge of a Slayer tone in there how cool. I really do think James's vocals are better than they ever were. there's a natural maturity to them, and the genius riffs, the whole band sound better than ever... Not being a dick so I apologize if it comes off that way. But if you been listening since 85 how can you say this is even close to the Metallica we grew up with? Just curious about your opinion is all. Cause this is not what I heared when I first dropped the Master of Puppets in the tape deck.
