This activity studies the reaction between metals and acids by dropping some zinc granules into dilute hydrochloric acid and dilute sulphuric acid. In each case, a gas is released and when this gas is tested with a matchstick flame, we get a characteristic popping sound and see that the matchstick burns more brightly. This indicates that the gas produced is hydrogen. Zinc forms the salt zinc sulphate with sulphuric acid and zinc chloride with hydrochloric acid and releases hydrogen gas in both cases. In general, a metal reacts with an acid to form a salt and releases hydrogen gas.

I have a homework from school, one question is: what happens with a bike if it is outside in acid rain, does it rust?
@KClassScienceChannel
@KClassScienceChannel 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Erik, This is probably too late for your test - but the answer would be that a bike left outside in acid rain would indeed rust. It would rust faster than normal, because the acids present in the rain accelerate oxidation. Write back if you have comments, and thanks for watching!

I think it was However he forgot to mention that this reaction happens only when the metal that takes part is more active than Hydrogen For e.g : 2Na + H2SO4 = Na2SO4 + H2. can happen because Na is more active than H2 and can replace it However Hg + H2SO4 cannot happen because H2 is more active than Hg and Hg isnt powerful enough to replace h2 So “when a metal more active than H2 reacts with a acid there will be h2 gas” is the right phrase
