Metalwork Dogs at the

@vamuseum is somewhere I could explore endless and find something new every time. On my latest visit I looked around the metalwork, as I don’t usually do. These pieces stood out to me as they had large figures of dogs displayed. All emblems of a guild or family.
1. BALCONY | Wrought iron, Jean François Cahon, France, ca.1770. The central monogram of crossed keys and interlaced Ls and Cs supported by hounds suggests that the balcony may be the work of Jean François Cahon, blacksmith to King Louis XVI of France (1754-93). The hounds and keys are the symbols of the Guild of Blacksmiths.
2. HIREBACK | Cast iron, Possibly Belgium, 1940-00.
Despite depicting the arms of King Edward VI and the Tudor rose and portcullis. This fireback was probably made in Belgium where firebacks with many similar features are known to have been made.
