I think you may be mistaken in Diavolo's motivation. He didn't just want to be the boss, what he really wanted was to be unknown. Being unknown wasn't just a safety thing for him or a practical matter. He had a deep need to be unknown to everyone so badly that his personality split into 2 and he kept his identity from that other personality.

Tooru personifies calamity, which is shown as a force of nature in part 8. He himself states that it is ‘inevitable that bad things will happen, that is calamity.’ His expression of this inevitability is in PERFECT contrast to Josuke. Josuke is the result of a string of divine coincidences, to the point where his very existence is an impossibility. (The impossibility of his own existence is also on display in the ability of Go Beyond) This dynamic, inevitably vs. impossibility is the strongest and subtlest dynamics in the series in my opinion. The conclusion to this clash is the impossibility prevailing, as the only thing that can overcome a law of nature is something that is incapable of existing within it, as it is unbound by nature’s very laws. In conclusion: Tooru goated and I love talking about him. There’s more to their dynamic too: how their conflicting natures are shown through their early interactions with Yasuho, Tooru’s value in memory vs. Josuke’s lack of memory & value in those who he forms memories with. I can go on, but I hope this helped explain why I really enjoy this underrated villain.

I like Tooru a lot, but I don't think he's the "main villain", just the "final villain". There was no "main" villain in Part 8 as Josuke's struggle was introspective, which is why Josuke fights Wonder of U, and never confronts Tooru directly. The downfall of Tooru is the Higashikata family, as he is a predator targeting their family and land. For the type of story Jojolion was, I think Tooru was fine.

@@nuibaba280 Yes, but it's still just Rock Humans vs the Higashikata. It's kinda like the Emperor in Star Wars. Obviously the "main" antagonist is palpatine, as he'd been pulling the strings for the entire series, but thematically Vader is a more important antagonist because he's the one who directly confronts Luke, our protagonist. Luke's battle is predominantly against his father, not the Emperor. In the same regard, Josuke's battle is with himself, with self acceptance. Tooru was just a hurdle for him to overcome, as all the other Rock Humans are. I guess that's what I was getting at. Tooru is the "main" antagonist, just not for Josuke, which is why Josuke fights [Wonder of U], a man with no face as his final adversary in cementing his own identity, instead of Tooru directly, who is defeated by the Higashikata family, who the Rock Humans have been plotting against for years.

Honestly, diavolo was shown late in the part because araki had wanted to have a sort of aura of mystery around him, so he only went by, "boss" early in part 5. Also, araki did this because of how secretive mafias can be. This is the very same case with tooru from jojolion; there was another air of mystery about learning who exactly was the head doctor and araki definitely looked at part 5 for inspiration

On Diabolo, I think the ambiguous backstory helped Diavolo's characterization. Mostly because it builds him up as a force of nature because if we did know Diabolo's full origins it would be quite boring, and his character would be less intimidating because we as humans are less scared of something if it has a direct explanation. Imagine if we were just told his entire life, we would just take it and move on, but because we only get little bites of his background, there is more suspense surrounding who is Diavolo, what is Diavolo, and how is Diavolo. This becomes a lot more important when considering that JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is a SUSPENSE/HORROR series.

On Funny Valentine- what was established with Pucci, is perfected with Funny Valentine. Initially an unassuming fat oaf, is exposed as a towering man of principle that has an elegant looking Stand with a godlike power that is further boosted by the messiah himself to do a goal that’s arguably nobler than the heroes. While he definitely has morally dubious traits, he’s someone that makes you question who’s right and the role of antagonist. He’s the best so far….

With Kars, I view the trio Pillar Men as the collective main villain, with Esidisi/Wamuu standing out. He’s initially a stoic and determined villain that is shown to care for life and his colleagues, but his later actions of throwing it away to be a dishonorable sadist, managed to really get under my skin- even more so than Dio Brando’s disgusting antics. Even with his admittedly cool Ultimate Life Form powers and his backstory of being unappreciated by his people to help them overcome their weaknesses- it’s hard to see Kars as a favorite or even memorable in comparison to the other two, who show affable natures, hidden depths and cool fights.

Tooru doesn't just want money, he wants to be historic and legendary. The idea is that in a world where Rock Humans outbreed and slowly conquer the Humans from within, he would be remembered as their ultimate genius messiah and hero forever, because memories and legacy are all that matter to him. He's frustrated that even after making a new innovative invention, Humans don't even consider the impact of what he made, or how influential it will be, they just focus on how he looks or acts and decide to reject him for such shallow reasons. I love the Rock Humans because their supremacism is much more grounded, realistic, and interesting than just that there are a race of people that are more powerful than humans. Diovolo doesn't just want to be in charge, he wants Doppio. The characters throughout the entire part assume that the boss's past must have the key to some huge weakness in his powers and abilities that will lead to his defeat. But that's not true, the only reason he has to keep his identity secret is so that he can continue to live as the sweet and cute innocent doppio without being recognized as the god father.

With Part 1 Dio Brando- while he does have his tragic death of his mother and abuse from his father, it’s overshadowed by his decision to accept what society eventually expects from him due to his monstrous actions- becoming a corrupting monster that perverts life. While he does do the unthinkable by killing the main hero, this literal/metaphorical parasite pales in comparison to his later self. He does have the eerie factor of ruining Jonathan’s life early on before becoming a vampire that almost always loses in extreme fashion to Jonathan.

With DIO from Part 3 onwards, my initial impression was this larger than life, hardcore monster that had this pretense of being of a methodical and strategic person before becoming a crazed loon undeserving of the loyalty of his followers. His Stand- The World sets up the expectations for a main villain Stand- imposing with a unique design and awesome powers- in this case, awesome enough to be copied into the main hero’s already impressive roster of abilities. DIO has a grand build up, but fizzles out without dignity. He’s portrayed as a irredeemable monster in part 4 as well. It’s part 5 and especially 6 that we finally see his depths of character as a father that sometimes spares children for vague, but implied conflicting reasons and a philosophy person that has interesting views on fate.

Josuke’s journey WAS the build up to Tooru. Both are men who were born from the earth, who were blessed with incredibly powerful stand abilities, yet walked completely different paths. Josuke learned to move on from the past, while Tooru revels in it. He focuses on his past relationships and failures because he values the longevity of ones own legacy above all else. While there isn’t anything wrong with wanting to be remembered, Tooru goes about life ONLY wanting to do things worth remembering. Tooru doesn’t cherish the moments he spends with Yasuho like Josuke does, only the memories left behind. Tooru is what Josuke could have been, and I think that’s beautiful. TLDR; Tooru’s buildup is more thematic rather than just being blatantly shown.

What makes Kars one of my favorite villains is that underlying his quest for power and his basically limitless strength is this intense fear of death. It makes him come off as sort of pathetic. The scene where he protects the flower from his falling body is the most telling. He respects the flower because it has grown healthy despite its conditions. Kars sees himself in that, but really he is nothing like the flower. Kars is unstoppable, as the other pillar men were and recognized about themselves, but he fixated on “perfection” and his fear of death so much that he convinced himself he was a flower at the bottom of an alpine canyon. So even when he stands alone as the final member of his species, he still fixates on eternal life free from the fear of mortality, despite having really nothing left to live for. He is and always has been purely motivated by fear. That’s why I like Kars.

Diavolo certainly isn't the best villain, but I think there is much more to him than what you described. His parallel to Giorno is that he doesn't use resolve to fight his fate, he just skips to the result of everything. His obsession with erasing his past and only looking to the future is really cool. Judging from the fact that Giorno is basically Jesus, I think Diavolo is actually the devil incarnate. He is shown to honestly be the most evil villain, with no semblance of care for anything but himself. Araki in an interview I think before Stone Ocean released put Diavolo in like his top 5 favorite characters, to me this means there is a lot to Diavolo that Araki chose not to show the audience and other characters

No I agree. Jojolion is a story about motherhood and as a Rock Human never meets his mother. In nature it is the job of a father to protect while it is the job of the mother to teach. Tooru was never taught how to interact with anyone or anything; it was the opposite, he was taught how to act as a parasite with the hornets. Wonder of U is how Tooru interacts with anyone and while Wonder of U has its own personality, as a reflect of its user, I like to think Wonder of U is Tooru’s true self.

Diavolo is the most misunderstood character in the series. The way I see it Doppio, his original personality, was traumatized by his past and his mother suddenly reappearing in his life most likely caused a psychotic break. This gave him extreme paranoia about anyone finding out about his past, and Doppio either created Diavolo or let him take over as a way to cope and hide from things that he doesn't feel strong enough to face himself. Diavolo was also designed to be a perfect foil to Bruno. He let his traumatic experience destroy his ability to ever trust others again and he considers personal ties and relationships to be a weakness he needs to destroy. Bruno is the opposite, he had a traumatic past and shitty childhood but he never lost faith in other people, and he helped the rest of his gang to move on from their pasts and learn to put faith in others again. There's a lot more to his character that I think is absolutely brilliant but this is already turning into a novel.

@@GonFreeccs123 I don't teally think this applies to part 3 dio tbh. Part 3 dio felt like a shell of his former self, with no real personality or motive. I know this was retconned in part 6, but imo that doesn't make how weak his character was in part 3 any better. Dio in part 3 really fails as a villain for me because he has no personal stakes with the main characters. Diavolo directly influenced the lives of all the main characters in part 5 in one way or another and acted as a foil for bruno. Kira murdered a close friend of the main cast in part 4. But dio just feels disconnected, like "we have to stop him because he's the bad guy from part 1". Saving holly is also a very weak motive for jotaro, as he's shown to treat her pretty poorly and doesn't really seem to show much concern for her. Also the amount of pointless meandering in part 3 makes it feel like there's no sense of urgency whatsoever to saving Holly. Idk I just think part 3 fails at pretty much every aspect of storytelling honestly.

I think tooru is less of a narrative villain and more a force of nature style villain that represents the impact that the rokakaka fruit had on the higashikata household The rokakaka was deceptive in the sense that it seems like it should be a problem solver but in reality all it did was send hordes of rock humans after Josuke and the gang and dealt out suffering and pain to everyone. This is like tooru because tooru was an assistant doctor and had the stand of the head doctor. He’s very “kind”, laid back, and charismatic. They seem like they should help you and be good guys yeah? With Yoshikage Kira, after the very bombastic initial candidates for big bad like Angelo, Keicho, and Akira with flashy powers, but especially compared to the larger than life godlike figures of DIO and the Pillar Men- a mild mannered salary man who happens to be a serial killer would be the last person to inhabit the role. But, Araki managed to make him just as much of a threat on a personal level and realistic one. He’s thorough for most of the time- something I’d wish more major villains would do. His Stand has a very unique design that’s sleek and dangerous looking- having an array of powers- either initially or later gained. He displays a capacity of humanity to a greater extent than the previous main villains and has a unique mindset. It’s his evil tendencies that get in the way of it. He managed to really put the story into a tense corner that I didn’t feel with the previous main villains. And he was resourceful. He’s not only a great villain, but a phenomenal character in his own right.

I agree that Tooru isn't good, but I didn't see him as the whole villain. He was the biggest for sure, but I viewed the rock humans as a whole to be the villains and their goal of trying to surpass carbon-based humans and become the dominant species. Gappy was there to foil their plans, be back as Josefumi, or now as Josuke and the rock humans were made to place their hope into Tooru and Wonder of U to get the new rokakaka and usher in their age. Urban Gorilla specifies that the new rokakaka will bring "A whole new world for us", while the good guys are focused on money and fame. It was the rock humans vs the higashikata family, with Tooru and Gappy as their pillars. Too bad one of those pillars were better than the other.

I think Pucci is the best handled villain due to how much time Araki had to develop him. You cannot separate stand from it’s master ( if you did - you simple don’t care about ideas of Araki about his power system and how it’s works in Jojo) Was Wonder of U awesome? Yes, so did Tooru. Not just because of the stand, but Wonder of U have it’s part in why Tooru ARE great villain. He had dramatic end. Not ironic like Kira or Diavolo or Kars. Dramatic end. He had his moments of life, like dancing and listening to the freaking song reference. He had enough brain cells to at least, trying to escape from battlefield when things got hot. And he had connections to most of cast. Yasuho, Rai, Holly etc. And he is total opposite of Josuke, just like Araki write in his book about making manga.

With Enrico Pucci, he’s step to a different path than the previously monstrous big bads- more of a well-intentioned extremist with his own past leading to his goal. His relationship with DIO fleshes out the latter and established him not as a blind zealot, but an equal that is able to have a friendship with a previously seen flat, pure evil character. His Stand goes through a great deal of development, going from a resourcefully, versatile support to a potentially large scale physical threat that threatens gravity and finally a reality warping horseman of the apocalypse- each with an intimidating design. This cunning, adaptable manipulator manages to shake the status quo by being extremely competent and achieving a goal that leads to a massive change in the dynamic of the parts going forward.

Adding on to what others have said: “Developing a villain halfway through is Bad but Kira is awesome.” Okay? “We don’t get to see a lot of Diavolo or Doppio even though Doppio has HIS OWN FIGHT SCENE AGAINST ANOTHER VILLAIN.” “Doppio doesn’t seem like a villain.” Bro thats... the point... “Araki, why didn’t you develop diavolo’s backstory?? We need to see everything about every aspect of every villain!!” Again, the point. “Valentine’s backstory is THE BEST.” Yeah dude, I loved pulp fiction too? As for Tooru... you sure say “Imma be real with y’all” a whole lot and then don’t really give any reasons as to why exactly you don’t like him except for “he isn’t developed enough” and “he came in late in the story (like Kira btw).” Nothing about how his obsession with memories and lack of family is a direct foil to Josuke and the morals of Jojolion as a whole, nothing about how like Diavolo, he’s meant to represent more of an “idea” than a character. And let’s not get started on the “Araki didn’t care about the ending of Jojolion.” Damn, you’d be a great filmmaker with all that projection. Jojolion was about breaking a curse and finding family. Both of those goals were achieved. I guess Lucy’s speech about everyone having a “mission” was kinda lost on you, if you even bothered to read it. Also love the irony of ragging on Araki for undeveloped ideas when you don’t spend longer than 2 minutes on each villain. A+

For Tooru it feels like he works better as a villain than a character. Like a force of mature villain: ironic considering his stand literally can control a force of nature. Wonder of U on the other hand is a top 3 minimum stand. The WoU arc is peak JoJo and the way his stand is introduced is pitch perfect but Araki did bottle it with Tooru himself. He definitely had the most potential out of the Villains. Could have been even better than Valentine (yes I truly belive that if he wasn't fumbled) but ended up being mid for JoJo. I feel like he really fits in well with the theme of how mothers affect your view/actions in the world. Since rock humans never had mothers, and basically are alone for 17 years, they dont understand relationships and this is shown multiple times. So Tooru doesnt care for people or relationships that much, just memories. Only reason he wanted to spare yasuho was because he treasured their memories and not yasuho as a person. And his relationship with Doppio gives him somewhat more depth. Unfortunately, he’s outwitted frequently and he only really wins when it’s unnoticed or through others help. The one time he gets a clean win- the person manages to remain alive to screw him over. Even the person he killed managed to stick around to screw him over anyway. He also has the misfortune of sharing the spotlight with La Squadra and Ciocolatta- whose personalities make for more credible big bads. However, when he finally achieved so much, he lost so much: his race are essentially gone, he lost his best friend (Esidisi) and his 'son' (Wamu), and all because a bunch of humans got in his way. Being the Ultimate Lifeform doesn't mean everyone and anyone can stand with you... As a bonus, he's ultimately responsible for the sufferings of the Joestar family because had he never made those Stone Masks, Dio would have gone to jail, Yoshikage Kira would have been unstoppable, and Diavolo would have become the greatest Mafioso Emperor.

Key notes about villains in JoJo is that they’re often forces of nature, or symbolic representations of those forces. For that reason, many villains are given just enough origins as to remind the viewer they’re often at least similar to humans, even though about half of them aren’t. dio’s origins simply explain his original plan and his motivation against Jonathan, and all that follows is how he tries to get back at Jonathan or his bloodline, often being impacted by the dealings or actions of the other villains as he does. He was shown as the “Anti-Joestar,” and of course, the “Anti-Jonathan,” but without the title “Joestar” and with a much more different personality than Jonathan, Jotaro Kujo could them be seen as the “Anti-DIO.” Diavolo is DIO’s opposite, though ultimately very similar. Everything DIO stood for, Diavolo stood against, but had the same goals that a Joestar would hate, which is a good villain to have when the part’s JoJo is a son of DIO and of Jonathan. Obviously, both DIO and Diavolo are also meant to represent “god” and satan, albeit since DIO’s a prick, he’s not god under christianity’s expectation. Giorno then represents Jesus Christ, and Pucci some level of a Pope figure and a prophet of god’s will. Kars represents the ideas of purity, perfection, and being the very best by nature, which Joseph is absolutely not. Joseph does not improve his biology beyond the human limit and used his sheer intelligence to overcome the godly natures of his foes. Valentine is, at least according to himself, the bringer of greatness, a full reflection of nationalism and of pride, and the firm belief that what one does is the right choice, no matter who challenges it, all of which Johnny lacks, being a man who simply wanted to win and to return to his feet, by many if not any means necessary. Kira and Tooru are exceptions, as Kira is actually far more human in his presence than many other forces, and only really represents the more hidden, unclear evils that plague otherwise wondrous places, though his personality does completely contrast Josuke4. Tooru is an odd mixture of almost everything from Diavalo, Kars, Kira, and Valentine, with how his plans come about, what his goals are, what his abilities are, and what he symbolizes. He’s also not really meant to be an antithesis to Josuk8, but rather all of the Higashikatas and of Yasuho, and even then, he doesn’t really represent the opposites of their beliefs at all. He was never meant to be the “main villain,” but the final one, and the strongest one, and the deadliest one. Jobin fulfilled the antithesis role in how he pressed against all of his family, and symbolized a lot of the faults of family and of life.

One of the biggest let downs for part 8 was how they never really touched on rock human poses. Like there was a whole segment of world building that showed rock humans maturity based on their resting poses and I was so excited thinking the final villain was going to be a fully matured rock human or possibly even beyond that with the use of the new rokakaka. Felt like it was a missed opportunity for Tooru (although I didn't really like Tooru as a villain I did love his design and his stand is honestly top tier). However since I don't think Araki would just forget a major detail like that I have a feeling we might see more rock humans or off shoots of them at least in JojoLands.

Personally I really like Diavolo/Doppio as villians. The split personality thing along with his mysterious past was cool. Doppio is the original personality who seems innocent but hiding something within and Diavolo being the one developed at some point presumably from some tragic event who thinks he is above everyone else with the power of King crimson being able to somewhat manipulate fate on the small scale. However later proven fate can't truly be manipulated as fate itself will find another way. This connects to part 5 having the overarching theme of learning to accept your fate.

I agree, except his backstory should’ve been ENTIRELY UNKNOWN instead of knowing everything, though. It was like they wanted him to be just a creepy mysterious man, but also supernatural, and never picked one. I would’ve honestly just preferred if he was a straight up demon. We have vampires and zombies and Egyptian gods, why not? Also not really into the whole “split personality evil alter” vibe. Also lice hair lmao

You should really give some more attention to Diavolo, Part 5 is one of the deepest jojo parts and the villain is no exception; he embodies the ideas and themes that this part antagonizes i.e. Abacchio's partner's speech to him in afterlife; I recommend Oceaniz's videos on him, he made a ton of them and they really nail the idea of his character.

I feel like halfway villains mostly concentrate on lore and inner of the characters ;Kars with pillars man fates , diavolo with doppio (the duality of the two) , and tooru with the rock humans race , I think they were to be taken value/what they carry than villains themselves (it's your opinion and I respect it though)

Diavolo already ruled over Italy, he wasn't seeking the requiem arrow, the story isn't about what Diavolo wants to become its about what he wants to avoid, and that is becoming known, he wants to erase his past, he's obsessed with that idea, so when he finds out he has a daughter he immediately wants to kill her himself, others cannot do it because he wouldn't be at peace with the possibility of her surviving, so he wasn't introduced at the end, we knew about him from the beginning, and once he got his daughter bruno betrayed him and saved her, Diavolo was confused by this, he honestly valued buccerati's efforts and gives him a way out before deciding to kill him. They escaped and now the objective is reveal the identity of the boss, now Diavolo is on the defensive, ultimately the found someone who knows his name and his face, the cat is out of the bag and we meet the shadow He wasn't introduced at the end, we just didn't get a clear look at him until the end and that's because he did everything in his power to avoid it, but we knew him, his motivation, his fear, his methods, we just didn't knew who he was.

my personal ranking of the villains (how much i like them not like how well written they are) 1. Tooru The long setup and buildup of Wonder Of U and the Head Doctor felt amazing to go through and got better with a reread because the clues were there. I just enjoyed him 2. Valentine Hes just perfect lol 3. Kira ok so i fucking hate this guy and i love him too 4. Pucci probably one of the best written characters in jojo and holy shit made in heaven 4. dio ITS FUCKING DIO 5. Diavolo king crimson funny 6. Kars kachow

I kinda wish that Part 9 main villain is either a JoJo or a JoBro who just spirals down into craziness and then becomes a great villain to stop JoJo.

I think with Tooru Araki spent too much time on the build up of the mysteries of the part and didn't pace out his pay off. It seems like the concept of rock humans and their instinctual greed and lack of empathy was moreso the real villain of the part. Although that might be me over analyzing bad writing.

I think diavolo wasn't just the user, it was mostly the stand king crimson. Moat of the times we encounter the boss it is king crimson who appears and speaks, as well as in the requiems soul swap

i agree with your tooru opinion but like ima be honest if he was fleshed out anymore i don’t think i would’ve liked him as much as i do, becuse with a stand like wonder of u, i would expect tooru to really not want to do anything, he can simply focus on his goals, and when he has the means to try to achieve them, why change the goals, and why reveal them when you can protect yourself from the small chance of danger he has been up against. If he was shown to be super care free, but extremely stealthy and sleazy at getting what he wanted, while kinda keeping the amount of information he gave to us the audience the same or even less, then his power would come full circle. Because he is pursuing the rock human way, and calamity is stopping people from pursing tooru, which doesn’t really allow him to understand anyone or anyone to understand him. It’s a cycle of tooru finding the way to his goals and the people after him picking up his tracks while playing to his rules. Interesting paradox that played out well until the ending
